“Three wonderful days at Kingfisher Lodge”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

My spouse and I spent three nights at the Kingfisher Udayana Lodge in the last week of March, one leg of a trip in which we stayed at four of the ecolodges. We had an exceptional experience at the lodge. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant and this greatly enhanced our experience; Nyoman and Kadek in particular were very helpful and made us feel like we were at home. The lodge is situated on a hill overlooking the southern part of Bali that is located on a wooded section of the campus of Udayana University far removed the hustle and bustle that characterizes much of Bali. A number of nature trails wind through the woods. The lodge has a very nice pool with wonderful views. We took part in a number of excursions organized by the staff; birding at the treatment ponds, beach at Nusa Dua, Kecak Dance at Ula Watu temple, dinner at Restaurant Cuisine on Jimhbaran Beach, and a two day trip to West Bali National Park, all of which we recommend to others. The lodge is a two story building with the 10 rooms on the lower level and the upper level is a large open area with a dining area and a lounge/library. The multi-course meals were very good and we enjoyed long-leisurely breakfasts and dinners sitting in the open area overlooking the island. The staff are very proud of the environment friendly features of the lodge and it is encouraging to know that at least a few are working to improve environmental awareness on Bali.

We thank you for your report about us especially your appreciation of Kadek and Nyoman and our staff. It really gives them a feeling that all their hard work is not in vain. We so appreciate guests who really understand the great struggle to keep this wonderful environment which is so rapidly being destroyed

Thank you

As always a lovely stay at The Lodge. Quiet and relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta, yet close enough by car if you want to venture in. Food is great and service always with a smile. Thanks again!

We loved this ecolodge! We stayed here with our 18 month old for 3 nights. The service is wonderful, everyone is so nice and helpful. Thank you to Agung and Kadek for a memorable stay. The lodge is very peaceful and quiet, the rooms are comfortable and very clean. Although not on the beach, the view is beautiful and the surrounding forest reserve makes one forget that you are in the middle of one of Bali's most visited and crowded parts. The hotel is one of the few truly environmentally responsible places in the area and their initiatives are outstanding. This is hugely important in an area that continues to be overdeveloped such as southern Bali. We definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to be close to all the attractions without leaving a heavy footprint during their stay.

Dear Malaysian Guests, thank you for your report especially your emphasis on the environmental aspects of our Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge. This has been an enormous struggle and so important for Bali at the present time. We also appreciate your kind comments about our staff.

British couple 28 years old

Stayed in one of the double rooms, it was very clean and comfy with good A/C and hot water to the shower, they cleaned the rooms daily, the massive double bed had a decent mozi net covering us at night. The breakfast (inc) was fantastic and there's a lovely pool area overlooking the reserve. It's not located near anything but that's what we were after, a taxi to kuta is about 20mins or to jimbaran (beach and restaurants) was about 10mins. We would stay here again!

We really enjoyed our time at this lodge. The service is excellent - in fact the staff just cant do enough for you. Arrange for their own car and driver to pick you up at the airport for a hastle free start to your trip. It is set in a peaceful location above Jimbaran. It takes nearly 3/4 hour to walk to the beach but the grounds are lovely and the pool is set in a secluded spot. The rooms are ground floor with a terrace overlooking the garden and the dining room and lounge are above with beautiful views.

I stayed for one week at the Kingfisher Eco Lodge and had the best stay. It is perched up on a hill, so you have a beautiful view overlooking low lying areas of Bali, especially in the mornings, when having your freshly made breakfast on the terrace upstairs. The food was fresh, local and just divine. I had different local dishes during my stay and recommend the Gado Gado with it's scrumptious Satay Sauce and healthy vegetables, Banana Fritters and Balinese Honey (quite something), and the Pancakes at breakfast time!

It was quiet, honest, bursting with charm and I loved being surrounded by the many different flowers, fauna and wildlife in their garden. They arrange tours of the area, to suit your needs, and will tell you all you need to know.

It is a little gem, and you are welcomed with great fondness by the staff. I was travelling alone, but felt quite at home here, with their spacious and tidy double ensuite rooms, and stunning pool area, which I pretty much had to myself when I fancied a dip.

I would recommend it for anyone looking to spend their precious time and money for a wonderful conservation and community cause, and to see the true, charming side of Bali, Indonesia.

Enjoy

Since my first visit to Bali, the Udayana Lodge has and will always be an important place on my travel schedule. And certainly this time, as the start of our honeymoon.

There are many things that make the Lodge a unique place to stay. The long driveway through one of the last pieces of jungle on the Bukit Badung paeninsula, leading to the romantic 'Candi' (gate), with an umbrella of bougainvillea flowers, already give you the impression that you are about to visit a place of mystique and tranquillity. The building has an almost colonial charm and seems to embrace you as a guest. And you feel embraced when you are welcomed at the reception and write your name in a gigantic guest book in which all visitors have signed in from the beginning and where you can find your previous stays as a dear memory.
If you are not impressed by then you will be when you look at the view from the reception and restaurant, as well as from the open 'living room'. The sound of the birds, the butterflies passing by, the morning view on the sacred mountain Gunung Agung (almost 100 km's far), as well as on the Strait Lombok, simply must enchant you.
The rooms are unique too. The furniture is simple but authentic. With a 'Klamboe' to protect you from (rare) mosquitoes, a private bathroom which is located outside and gives you the unique experience of showering in the garden and with the view and tranquillity from your own teak chairs outside your door and from the uniquely designed pool in the garden, you realize that you are at a very special place.

But despite the view, the wonderful building, the location and your cosy room, it is the people who make the Udayana Lodge feel like your home. At your breakfast you realize that you have become part of a family. The reception (esp. Kadek and Agung), the kitchen and the cleaning staff, the founders Alan and Merril and even the other guests give you the feeling of belonging, of having arrived at home. The only negative thing I can say about the Lodge is that the departure is terrible. Because You will not want to leave the Lodge. Unless you are already looking forward to coming back.
