Having read the Tripadvisor reviews over the past few months, I was a bit tentative about staying at this property v the W. We ended up staying with our choice as Sheraton was 10K v 20K points and importantly, the beach at the W is not really an easy swim/surf beach (we have two teen daughters that joined us on the trip). It was definitely the right choice. Used Suite Nights to upgrade for the entire stay and ended up upgraded to an Oceanfront Suite, which was fabulous (although you do hear some street noise at night) for our 7 night stay.
First the rooms: bedroom and living room were a great size and provided terrific hangout space for all family members when we took a break from the sun at midday. Bed very comfy. Great that the living room also had a separate washroom. Large terrace looking out on the ocean and beach was great both early in the am for some peaceful time with a book as well as in the late pm for sunset and cocktails before dinner. Family also looked forward to the snack which arrived each day (assume Platinum amenity?) from cheese tray to lovely sweets, etc.
Food: ate breakfast every day at Feast and that it was. Great range/variety, terrific service, staff remembered what you liked after the first day or so, etc. Not often you have range of Western, Chinese, Japanese, plus frozen yogurt! Great coffee as well (when you order espresso based vs brewed), my wife doesnt drink coffee often but had one each day at breakfast because it was so nice. We had long chatty breakfasts each day we were there. Definitely make arrangements to have breakfast there each day
Bene; as noted in the other reviews, this was great Italian, am sure in no small part to the charming Italian Exec Chef, Ressano. Had lunch and dinner there many of the days (wife loved the tuna tartare salad for lunch) and had sufficient variety. Great service as well.
Other hotel areas; Gym nice, new, great equipment although somewhat small so if more than a handful of people it can feel a bit crowded. Having said this, as we were swmming and surfing every day, didn't really feel a gym workout was so required while there.
Pool, as noted is relatively small but we didn't have a problem with chairs, etc while we were there. The pool guys did a great job with towels, managing the chairs, etc. much more so that at many other hotels we have stayed at. Nice also that the Bene staff came around with little snacks/tastes of their specialties in the afternoon. Always a treat
General hotel layout: as noted in other reviews, the hotel is not a "resort hotel" per se with a large stand alone area so the layout and distance to various parts of the hotel could be a pain but after a day we found the short cuts, eg. from our oceanfront room, we took the emergency stairs 4 flts down to ground level vs walking to the front of the hotel (which faces away from the beach) as well as took this staircase to level 2 to walk to pool, etc.
Large lobby area with pc's, bar, etc, with plenty of space to hangout if don't have a suite.
Management: FABULOUS! Probably the most visibile management team have ever seen at a hotel. Saw the Exec Chef every day at breakfast and at Bene as well as the outlet managers of both, Saw F&B mgr every day, Duty manager, Front ofc mgr, etc. Really felt at home and well looked after. Don't get this really many places that we have visited and we are frequent travellers. Thanks to all for their hospitality.
The surroundings: Well Kuta is Kuta.....we loved it for the high points, which for us was the beach and the surf. Kuta and Double 6 are probably the best swim and (beginnger) surf beaches so being across the street was fabulous. We went early in the am and late pms each day. Find a rental guy that you like/don't find annoying and use each day, we would boogie board one part of the day and surf the other part, then have a beer or soft drink at the rental guys little area (you'll see when you get there). We paid 40K for 2 boogie boards for the day (4usd). Bintang, max 20K (2USD).
We also went one day to Seminyak, had a drink at Potatohead, which everyone loved, but b/c beach wasn't really safely swimmable (riptide), we decided to hang at either Double 6 or Kuta. Biggest pain in moving around was the return to Kuta as had to crawl past all the crowded touristy places, bars, etc. (which we avoided other than these cab rides). We also liked Beachwalk mall and ate at Kitchenette a number of times (make your own salads, etc.).
Everyone also liked Echo Beach (went out there for lunch the day we also stopped by Potatohead). If you do plan on driving around much, possible to rent car/wdriver (Toyota Inova type) for about 40 usd per day, for taxi's take Bluebird co. taxi's, always metered and no annoying negotiation. if you go to Double 6, probably will have to call a bluebird or just walk out of the area a 100 meters or so to flag one on the street (as Double 6 beach has "arranged taxi service" which doesnt allow regular taxis and charges rates typically 4x taxi rate, but even more so, we prefer not to patronize these types of groups for obvious reasons). Bring REALLY strong sunscreen if you are at all fair skinned and reapply frequently. Great time, would go back (have been to Bali over a dozen times)
