I was only in Kuta overnight June 2014 after flying in from Singapore and flying on the next day to Labuan Bajo for a great stay at Komodo Resort & Diving Club -- see separate review. From the bit I saw I am not sure I would want to spend more time in Kuta, although further afield in Bali I hear was more interesting and less hectic. Kuta was very touristed, packed with global shops and restaurants, bad traffic and little or no apparent local culture. The beach with views, waves, surfers and sunsets seemed its only redeeming quality and there were certainly many tourists on the beach that were enjoying it and the endless friendly mini drink bars.
If you are going to be here the Sheraton seems an ideal place. I stayed on points, as a Platinum was upgraded to a spacious and very nice ocean front suite, the complimentary breakfast was great, the staff helpful and friendly, and the ocean views (right across the road) were excellent. There was a shopping center with lots of appealing restaurants (although nothing local) as a neighbour and you got a taste of crowded bustling local markets just behind the hotel.
Its about a half hour to 45 minute taxi to the airport. About 80,000 rupee ($9) from cabs the hotel called or from the prepaid airport counter.
The airport was very good with all efficient processes, free internet that worked well and ok places to eat. The only disappointment was the crowded and generally underwhelming business class lounge.
I was among several others that could not get money from the Airport ATMs, so having US$ to change at the bank outlets beside them was good.
