“Losing its appeal”
Review of Kuta Square

This place used to be full of character and happy stall holders looking to engage tourists in some bargaining. Now it seems over-run with hawkers pushing "free" accommodation if you sit though their 90 minute spiel on club membership. Those in the markets are becoming pushy in trying to get you to enter their stalls and so many traders are offering Viagra or drugs as you walk past.

If you don't like being hassled or bothered avoid this area. Have the experience, get what bargains you can then head down to Mattaharis for a better shopping bargain - especially with shoes !

Kuta Square is in the middle of all the action, day or night. You have shopping The Mattahari,Discovery complexes.Plenty of brand name shops around.Local shops and the Art markets for bargaining.Jalan Legian one direction and Kartika .. the other(Tuban/south kuta)beach and Waterbom handy.Heaps of eateries, local and international ,plenty of bars.
night is the time when all the fun begins.Crusos 24 hour bar has great food and entertainment, run by Aussies Ron and Renee,Bali Rock,Hard rock endless places to go.
Days are for cheap massage, hair braiding for the kids or surfing.
Downside........plenty of touts flogging time share apartments at Sanur etc.Dont take the free cards they offer, it's just a scam.Dont drink the local rice wine,Arak, known to kill.

Liked Great shopping many good places go choose from. There is really good department store mataharis, but you have to drag staff over to serve you. The other place I like is bagus, which sells watches and jewellery, be careful when walking around as there are slippery pathways!

Kuta Square and Matahari was the premier (and probably only modern shopping area outside of Denpasar) a few years back but other large Shopping Malls such as Discovery, Beach Walk and Lippo Mall to name a few have popped up in the local area.
Kuta square still maintains it's appeal via the branded shops such as Rip Curl, Billabong and Polo together with popular Bagus Watches, McDonalds and some decent jewellery shops.
Matahari is now looking very dated and certainly is not the bargain basement it was.
A couple of OK restaurants in the square as well but not really the appeal to visit this area any more.
