“Presidential Suite spacious, for price”
Reviewed 28 April 2011

Close to beach, in a street off double 6. Room very spacious 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with a veranda for under $100 a night. Presidential suites upstairs, either 36 steps or 54 to other - main bedroom looked out on building site, but kept curtains closed so didn't matter. Not very clean.
Breakfast included, not everything out by 7.30am when it opens- juice, toast, fruit, indonesian either soup and plain rice or next day nasi goreng and mie goreng. Also egg station.
2 pools, one at front, one at back. Pool towels one a day per person, however ran out everytime you wanted to get a new one. Towels to be collected from restaurant.
Free wifi at bar near reception and front pool. Rooms close to that area would get free wifi.
Building site next door for 12 months - 200 room hotel going up, they are only licenced to work till 9pm each night, though sometimes they work longer.

This review is for the Grand Kumala, not the Kumala Pantai.
I booked a standard room and was shocked when I arrived to see the room - it was TINY - barely space to stand in and almost nowhere to put luggage.
The bathroom was also tiny and the shower area was scary - damp and mouldy shower curtain and very dark.
There was no TV in the room and the room itself smelled strongly of mildew. It was quite dark (the window faced a brick wall just a few feet away and the glass hadn't been cleaned in quite a while).
The air-con rattled noisily and barely cooled the room even though we had it set to 25 degrees C for the whole night.
Really I expect better for $30 (or more, depending on the exchange rate) a night. I don't expect luxury but a smelly mildewy tiny dark hole of a room is not acceptable to me at any price.
When we complained they told us the hotel was full but that the next night we could move to a "superior" room for 50,000 rupiah a night more. We agreed and it was a better room - more spacious by far, and with TV and fridge. This room was ok value, although the shower in this room was also tiny and mildewy.
The pillows were also really uncomfortable and at breakfast, they played horrible music (Kenny G doing covers of Bryan Adams. No I'm not making this up!) Sorry but that's not how I want to start my day.
Another complaint re: breakfast - they didn't even serve water - if you wanted water you had to pay extra and buy a bottle. This is not only stingy but ecologically irresponsible. One guest asked if she could fill up her metal water bottle and was told no and that she had to buy a plastic bottle.
For drinks at breakfast it was poor quality coffee, tea so strong you could stand a spoon upright in it (they just put the tea bags in and left them there indefinitely), and sugary orange coloured watery drink. Not very nice.
Free internet only in the bar. If you want wifi in your room you have to pay around 50,000 rupiah extra for 2 hours. I also found this rather stingy on the part of the hotel.
The location is good and the staff were nice (especially the woman at reception) but I think they have to pay more attention to maintenance and details.

The large photo is not the Kumala Hotel ( it is of the Kumala Pantai pool).
The Grand Kumala has two smallish pools, one at the front of the site, the other right down the back. There is a wide range of accommodation options, to the right of the the entrance is a 2 storied building with large double rooms- complete with ancient balinese double doors that need a padlock to close them- the rooms look "dismal" but once you are inside they are comfortable and quiet- bathrooms are basic but fine. Around the front pool there are several bungalows that are perfect for singles or a couple. Moving down the site there are some multi-bedroom apartments in a 3 storey building perfect for a group of friends or a family. At the back of the site is one 2 storey building overlooking the back pool, and a four storey building with large suites including the Presidential suite on the top floor. Breakfasts are not lavish, we always seemed to be waiting to pounce on the fresh fruit which came out v-e-r-y slowly, omelettes and toast were fine, juice could have been better. The Kumala is not overpriced luxury, it is probably pretty basic, but it has great charm and lovely gardens. Most of the people staying there when I was there were singles ( ideal for a female travelling alone), couples ( of all sorts!) and not many families with teenage kids - probably because the pools are so small. It is located on a lovely street - and only a short stroll from Cafe Jadi and Warung Asia ( both are excellent) - it is also close to the warehouse shops. We discovered the Bintang supermarket at Seminyak so extra food and drink items were never an issue. Local spas are also excellent. If I had not heard about the building works next door I would be rebooking for September 2011.

It was a bit of struggle getting the hotel to respond to my emails but finally made a reservation for 3 days for our first trip to Bali and Kuta/Legion. When we arrived they didn't seem to have my reservation but gave us a room for one night then told us that we could stay a week if we wanted which we did. We noticed other people coming and going at will and found out that many guests were repeat business owners, on shopping trips for import/retail businesses abroad. We met and befriended several people on our balcony and at breakfast who were extremely helpful with information about Bali, one couple giving us a ride to Ubud in their car.
We like the quiet location and the short walk to the beach for morning and evening walks & sunsets with nice restaurants on the beach close by. Took a cab into the craziness of Kuta beach area for dinner one night and was shocked that we had avoided all of that by staying at the end of Legion Beach area where it was much more peaceful. Of course that is showing our age (60's).
We liked our large room, enjoyed using the pool daily and found it a great value @ $30+ usd. Very pretty garden setting.

Booked into this hotel in the penthouse, had to manage suitcases upstairs to fourth floor. Room was ok but showing its age. Building site was our view from the balcony, worked all hours and in the morning the cement mixers started and non stop banging. I think if you were on ground level and in the rooms to the left of reception it would be fine but still pretty basic. Moved hotels after one night and went to its sister hotel The Kumala Pantai which was trice the price but 10 times better.

We stayed for 3 nights in deluxe room. I booked this hotel by email. They were good at taking reservation by email and their response was pretty fast.

Kumala hotel is a kinds of budget hotel however they have lovely garden and renovated clean bathroom. Our room was not so specious, however this is a good option for budget travelers. Beach is walking distance, nice day spa nearby, tons of shops and restaurant in neighborhood. I will stay Kumala again if there is change to come back to Bali.

First of all this review is for the Kumala Hotel/Grand Kumala, NOT Kumala Panti and I found it frustrating when researching this property that many reviews and pics for the two very different properties were mixed together on a lot of websites.

This was mine and hubby's 3rd trip to Bali since September and so we were very aware of our budget this trip.

Location of the property is pretty good, positioned very close to Double 6 to the left and right to Kumala Panti and Jayakarta. Lots of restaurants and shops within a very easy walking distance. (Although to be honest I did miss staying beachfront).

Nice gardens and well looked after.

Two pools, both of which I would have liked to drain and give the tiles a scrub but the water in both seemed clean and we swam every day.

We had a deluxe room and it was very big, fantastic huge bed, safe, large wardrobe, aircon, fan, TV. No hint of that musty Bali smell sometimes found in rooms.

A large bathroom, big vanity with lots of room to put all of your toiletries, huge shower, but no bath (not that bothered me at all.) Cleanliness of the bathroom was not a problem, I would probably rate it about the same as the standard at Puri Raja or Jayakarta as an indication.

We also had a large balcony, all the balconies are shared so you have to walk along them all to get to yours if you are at the end but we were only in a block of two so it was fine.

Breakfast is near the pool at the back of the hotel, it was toast, fruit, always an Indonesian dish, tea coffee, juice and an egg station. It was ok, nothing flash but for the price of the accommodation it was fine.

Staff are not overly friendly or helpful, not that they are rude its just that they are just doing their jobs although after a few days there were a few more smiles from staff. Also its the only place I have ever stayed where you see the staff laying on the lounge in the communal TV room relaxing and having a smoke!

We stayed there over the crossover from high to low season and our price per night averaged $48 aud, for that price we thought the Kumala Hotel offered fantastic value for money.

We would certainly stay there again if looking for accommodation in that price range, and it would have been cheaper if not for high season, also the fact that we had a deluxe room added to the cost, still we felt it was excellent value for money.

There were no big problems and we had a very pleasant stay.

We did not look into any of the other room types, standard or superior.

Also we brought a cheap plastic kettle and some cups and coffee tea etc as this is not supplied.

There was a large range of people staying there from older couples to young couples, a few families with teens, a few groups of couples and lots of Europeans of all ages. Also there were a few older ladies staying there on their own. It was very quiet of a night which was nice.

Also free wifi around the front pool and in the Lobby.

I was not expecting anything too much and I was pleasantly surprised, it certainly isnt anything flash but it was more than ok for what we wanted to spend.
