“Amazing Hotel / not for swimmers though”
Reviewed 28 December 2013

We spent our honeymoon at the Laguna in October 2013. There's no doubt that the hotel is an amazing one, the Lagoon like pool goes around the whole facility and makes the hotel very attractive. We stayed in a pool access room, which my husband enjoyed very much, however the pool access rooms make it difficult to keep the windows or the shades open, as there are people swimming right outside your room, so the room does not receive much sunlight. On the bright side, it's really nice to just step out of your room into the swimming pool. There's also small sandy beaches by the swimming pool which does make you feel like you are swimming in a Lagoon. For the ocean, my comments are not so encouraging. I think for people who are coming from Turkey or Greece, the Balinese ocean is not the best place to take a swim. The tide was very strong at the beach of Laguna and as there's a reef very close to the beach, you just end up with a muddy sandy place when the tide is low; and when the tide is high, the water hardly ever reaches an average height person's belly. If you're not a big fan of swimming, then the beach is very nice, white sand, beautiful trees and very clean and comfy chaise-longues. The breakfast at the hotel was quite nice, with an amazing variety of fruits and juices along with a satisfactory selection of cheese, along with a lot of sushi and Indonesian food alternatives. The best part of the hotel, in my opinion, was the Kul Kul bar right at the beach, with wonderful cocktails and exotic huts, which you can also reserve for somewhat private rests during the day. The massages given at the hotel are a bit pricy; but I would definitely reccommend the Volcanic Stone massage, it was the best massage I've ever had in my life. There are some other facilities that give massages for much lower prices; we were taken to a place by our local guide, which turned out to be quite dirty and the massage was quite disappointing. Therefore, I would reccommend to stick to the massage at the hotel. Last but not least, do not buy anything from the beach vendors who stroll through the hotel's beach during the day, they are very good at ripping people off! There's a big open shopping mall with a lot of restaurants, only five minutes away from the hotel and it's also possible to take a walk to a place where there are many street vendors which sell nice souvenirs with good prices (it's ofcourse necessary to bargain). The hotel is also very close to a private hospital. All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Laguna very much, despite the fact that I am addicted to swimming.

We had a family holiday here shortly after I visited the Mulia also in Nusa Dua the week prior. We had a great time and the place is great for most types of visitors, honeymooners or families etc. Lots of positives as below but some major negatives cut into the charm of the place.

Positives
Really friendly staff - from the moment you arrive they're cheerful and helpful. We had a pram and you rarely had to worry about a door being opened, someone was only to happy to help. When our daughter lost her Christmas party balloon in the lobby (helium, yes, it went to ceiling) someone found a replacement and then got it down somehow.

Location - Its in a great part of Nusa Dua, you can walk to other options for lunch or dinner, or the mall down the road.

Beach - The beach is relatively shallow and not suitable for those who want to surf etc. With small kids it was perfect however, and we rented a sea kayak from the hotel club and the guys were super helpful, with good life vests for all.

Pools - The pools are great, with a nice variety, but it doesn't have any slides or anything for the kids (which would probably feel out of place given the relaxed vibe of the place) or a swim up bar (which would be nice).

Christmas dinner - We had Christmas dinner at the Banyubiru restaurant and it was great. Nice buffet, Christmas carols and a good, if a little low-key, visit from Santa.

Kulkul Bar - Its a nice friendly low key bar with a nice feel. I am sure they try but Id encourage them to get a little creative with deterring the squirrels there as its a place people eat food etc, but otherwise nice (and the squirrel problem isn't unique to Laguna - hell, most folks think they're cute).

Spa - My wife visited the spa here and at the St Regis. The spa has been refurbished and although its about a third of the cost of the St Regis she thought the Laguna was better.

The guys that meet you at the airport transfer both ways are great.

Room cleaners - Very quick and efficient, much appreciated.

Wifi - Wifi is free and everywhere. Hate it when its charged separately so worth mentioning when its free.

Negatives
Our room felt old and tired - We went with a Ocean View Suite which while cavernous, I’m talking seriously huge and when new no doubt spectacular, was old and tired in the fittings. The carpet is threadbare in many areas and stained in the main bedroom. Thats a very big shortcoming for us and frankly it took us a few days to look beyond it.

Service Quality - Bali’s tourist trade is booming and its tricky to find decent staff. I’m talking about accuracy in getting orders and professional skill as opposed to friendliness etc which was always great. This place is jointly managed by the St Regis which we visited a couple of times and the staff there are so much better generally one was left with the feeling that perhaps this is a bit of a training ground. Maybe not, but we ate several times at each of the restaurants and that was the feeling.

Breakfast - Breakfast included in the package but only if you got it at the buffet not your room. Not good when you've got small kids.

Very Big Negative - I will be dropping the manager a note on this separately but the car that picked us up from the airport didn't have two working seat belts in the back. So we went along slowly on the way to the hotel as we’re too tired with kids to get alternatives arranged. Very poor. Just to prove its not an isolated incident on our departure from the hotel to the airport we’ve packed the car and got the car seat in only to be told, don't worry, but two of the three seat belts in the back of the car don’t work. The fact that two belts are broken highlights that its not an immediate problem and that nobody cares enough to fix them. I rejected the car and they were happy enough to quickly find another one and repack it (we didn't miss our flight) but its still totally unacceptable anywhere. I get hotel transfers as a matter of policy precisely to avoid dodgy taxis and poor safety practices.

Summary - If there were refurbished rooms on the property (and there might be) we’d think about returning. We paid about $1,000 / day for the suite once you included an evening meal for two it wasn't really good value.

Room Tip: Ocean view suite is very tired but has is very large.

My boyfriend and I visited the Laguna in November and it was amazing. The hotel was very clean and all of the staff were extremely helpful. We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days and although the weather was not the greatest with the rain... the beach was lovely and there was always something for us to do. We really enjoyed the massage by the beach and it was super relaxing. The room itself was clean and very spacious with a balcony that had a great view of the pools and bar by the lobby. Although we had a small hiccup while we stayed. We had originally booked a king size bed but when we arrived they only had 2 doubles. The staff was great and pushed the beds together for us though. Overall, it was very enjoyable and I would come back again!

Room Tip: The higher floors are less noisy.

We stayed at this resort for the main period of our Bali holiday and it was fantastic.

This was our first proper holiday as a couple and decided to spend a little bit more on this place as we were staying here for so long! It was a great decision!

Positives

1) Welcome - We were greeted by staff at the drop off point with a gong and women in traditional Balinese dress welcoming us. We were given a cold drink and sat down in the wonderful reception area. Check in took around 10 mins to verify payment etc and take us through the map of the resort but was done very efficiently. Was a really nice way to start our stay.

2) Room - We got to our room and boy were we happy! It was huge, like a giant city apartment. I was skipping round the place giggling like a school child! Everything was fantastic. There were giant couch's, an enormous bed and a fantastic bathroom. We were greeted with a welcome fruit basket and free bottles of water (which were re-stocked every day) and we couldn't have been happier. The view of the resort and lagoon was also incredible (see pictures).

3) Resort - Looked fantastic. Loads of different lagoons to swim in and plenty of sun loungers to sun bathe on (with enough shade if you are a bit sensitive to the sun). The restaurants looked really nice and the food was of a pretty good standard. My favourite part was breakfast as there was loads of choice in the mornings.

4) Staff - All really friendly and always looking to help. There was free tea and coffee room service and they were really quick bringing this to the room. We also told one member of staff that it was my partners birthday and they sent a special birthday cake to the room! Was a really nice touch!

Negative

1) Only really one and that is the price of the food and more so the price of the drink within the resort. We had just come from the gilli islands where it was barely 50p for a milkshake so to be charged near enough £3-4 for a can of coke seemed extortionate. I have seen some of the responses on here saying that the drink price is average across the Nusa Dua resort but I feel that the increase in product being sold if they lowered the cost of drinks would make more profit for the resort in the long run.

Advice

The Bali Collection, a group of shops and restaurants is literally a 10 minute walk away. Everything food and drink wise is dirt cheap and the resort didn't have a problem with us bringing the stuff back. We pretty much ate there every night and then went to the supermarket to stock up on drinks for the next day at the resort. This helps with the only negative that I have put in this review.

All in all a fantastic place to stay! (See the photos!)

Room Tip: Having seen the rooms with lagoon access I personally wouldn't have paid the extra money. All th...

It is truly a phenomenal experience at The Laguna. The superior quality of service, food and especially people impressed us the most. Pandhu at the front desk and Redita at Cornerstone restaurant are worth mentioning - their smiling faces, willing to help and patience made us feel at home. Suryaty, serving breakfast at Banyubiru, is the nicest and warm-hearted lady we ever met. Suryaty helped my wife after her morning work hour with transportation and shopping … It’s our first time to Bali staying at The Laguna. For sure we will be back again and will definitely introduce our friends to come and stay at The Laguna.

We stayed for the third time at Laguna Resort in Nusa Dua at the end of a 22 night cruise (very port intensive so wanted a nice rest). .Many will say that nusa Dua is a tourist enclave, but I think most resorts in Bali can be classed as such. What is nice about the Laguna Resort is the traditional Balinese style which in many newer hotels (Meridien Jimbaran, W Semanyak to name a few) doesn't exist. We had an amazing deal (US$179) and being Starwood Platinum we received a beautiful suite. It was such heaven having a huge lagoon virtually to ourselves as this was low season after being on a ship with a tiny pool for so long. We ate twice at the hotel, once at the beach barbecue (disappointing for a buffet style meal as very limited choice) and the main restaurant, which was much better. Breakfast was excellent. Would recommend eating at Jimbaran beach one night. Only drawback of Nusa Dua area is that other dining venues are limited unless you want more hotel food, but taxis are cheap for for a short break the Laguna really fits the bill. We plan to return for longer next year.
