Stayed here for 6 nights recently. Arrival welcoming and check in was pretty good considering we arrived around 11pm. Our first room was good (4208), it was a bit smelly from the air con and humidity but otherwise alright. Found it difficult to get a good nights sleep though. Breakfast each day was delicious with a huge selection to choose from. The second day we were there we arrived back from our tour in the morning to find the entire of building four smelled like varnish and a heap of noise coming out of the rooms opposite us. Turns out they were renovating and had not informed us. I raised this issue with the front desk and despite the initial confusion (language barrier) they were happy to upgrade us away from this to a junior suite (3209). These rooms are pretty good and the one we had didn't smell anywhere near as much as the first one.
One thing to watch out for is that when the hotel employees want to come into your room, they will simply knock and open the door without waiting for you to answer. Although we didn't get caught out by this, it would suck if you were in the bathroom or something and didn't hear them come in. My advice is to use the door catch and the 'do not disturb' signs. Although even when we did have the do not disturb sign on the door, we still had one of the employees bashing on the door trying to open it, just to give us a fax. Very annoying indeed! Like I said, use the door catch.
The pricing at the hotel is not that cheap by Bali standards, and this is probably due to the fact you are kind of captive to the resort and the Nusa Dua area. Some of the restaurants offer food at the same price as in Aus. Still the food was delicious and the service friendly and efficient. The spa suffers from the same case, cheap by Aussie standards but wildly expensive for Bali. The treatments themselves are relaxing and the facilities are great.
Overall, Melia Bali is a nice place to stay. The pool is great, the gardens are well maintained and the food is delicious. Just those few negative points about the room, pricing and people busting into your room detract from the place.
