Reviewed 6 October 2009

We visited the Melia Bali in September 2007 as the final leg of our honeymoon. We had visited Bangkok and Hong Kong in the days prior to arriving in Bali and as much as we truely loved those cities we were both really looking forward to being pampered in what we thought was to be a luxury hotel in beautiful surroundings.
Bali itself is beautiful, and we would both recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing get away holiday, however we felt really quite disappointed by the hotel.
On arrival we were escorted to our Superior double room, this room was quite a lot smaller than the rooms we had been used to in Bangkok and Hongkok, but that would have been ok if it wasnt for the damp smell in the air, the bedding although obviously clean on was also damp with a musty smell. We asked to be moved and after being shown other rooms of the same type we opted to pay a little extra to have a Duplex Suite. This room felt more spacious because it was on two levels, and did not seem to suffer from the damp smell or feel, however the bathroom fittings appreared to be very old and the shower pressure was very poor.
Breakfast was always very good, however having only opted for B & B we found evening meals really quite expensive, for what was quite average food. However if you venture out of the hotel there are lots of little restaurant along the main road or a 5 minute walk away from the hotel is an outdoor shopping complex which also has a number of restaurants with both local and other cuisines. These restaurants proved to be much better value for money, and we really quite enjoyed a change of scenery.
On a more positive note the pool area was beautiful, and no matter how late we went down to the pool there were always plenty of loungers in both sunny and shady spots. The spa situated next to the pool area was also very good, and the price of a massage was quite reasonable.
All in all we did enjoy the final leg of our holiday but did both feel that the newer hotels located just along the Nusa Dua beach had a more luxurious feel to them and if we were to go there again we would definitely look at staying in one of those.

We stayed at Melia Bali at the end of our 3 week trip to Bali for 3 nights. It was a great hotel. The rooms were a good size and clean. The hotel has lovely gardens and a fantastic pool. Just just a big square or oval it had a bit of character. The staff were very friendly too.
The beach this hotel is one is the best I've seen in Bali. It's a small bay with a private beach with only 3 other hotels in the bay. You could actually swim in the beach and it was a clean, white sand beach. We had previously stayed up further at Tanjung Benoa and Sanur and the beaches were terrible.
The breakfast each morning was just fabulous. The best we had in Bali. It had a huge selections of food and there would have to be something for everyone. From the usually hot selection, local hot selections, pancakes, waffles, fruits, cereals, cakes, pastries, even Spanish selection including Churros!! (being a Spanish hotel change) and even a Japanese selection. The only downfall was the restaurants and room service are very very expensive. However you can walk only 500m down the road to the Bali Collection which has many good priced restaurants with a lot have live music.
We could have easily stayed here for 7-10 nights and will definitely being doing that next year when we return to Bali.
Great hotel for families. We travelled with our 7 month old son and will be great when he is older with many other children to play with.
The only thing I would like to say to all the Europeans that stay there is could they have a little bit of respect and not sunbake topless with so many children around and in a conservative country?? This is not a reflection of the hotel as it happened on all the beaches at the hotels we stayed at.

I am not a pedantic person, but the rooms in this hotel was the worst I have come across. I am unable to comment on the rest of the hotel itself because I never actually stayed there in the end.

I was booked to stay at the Melia Bali for 11 nights with my husband as part of our Honeymoon. To keep it brief, we didn't stay because the room had an overwhelming smell of damp/mould. When we lay on the bed, even the bedding felt damp. It was disgusting. The bathroom was filthy and in desperate need of a refurb. After declining the dehumidifyer that reception offered (we have one at home and a dehumidifyer does not magically remove a smell), we were shown three rooms in total all of which were the exact same. So we checked out within an hour and moved to the Grand Hyatt next door.

We spoke to other guests in the hotel as we hung around reception desk and all the people we spoke to said that they had the damp smell in their room as well, but I honestly don't know how they put up with it because the smell is really that bad. I'm not exagerating.

The only positive is that the man at reception was very kind and patient with us and helped us as best he could. I actually feel sorry for the staff that work there because this issue is obviously raised with guests all the time.

In respect of previous reviews - I have travelled all over the world and stayed in many hotels and even in a 2* hotel I have never come across a cockroache. I am therefore definately glad I did not stay in this hotel as that is absolutely disgusting.

We stayed here for the last 6 nights of our honeymoon and where very pleased with the hotel. Security was great, the weather was great and as we stayed in a deluxe suite got to use the members only pool, beach beds and free drinks every night between 5 and 8pm !! The website definately doesn't do the place justice ! It was a perfect end to a perfect honeymoon and I would recommend paying the little bit extra to get the priviledges a honeymoon deserves!

My wife and I stayed at the Melia Bali as part of our honeymoon in July 2009, the hotel is situated in an enclosed area of Nusa dua where the security is very tight and sets all the hotels in this area apart from the more local part of Nusa dua, The decor in the hotel is in a balinese style and probably not as modern looking as some of the hotels nearby however that shouldn`t put you off as it is a very nice place to stay, there is a large lobby which also has a lobby lounge for drinks, the grounds are very well kept and are probably the nicest part of the hotel, our room was a level duplex suite and has a large sized room downstairs with seating area, tv, downstairs toilet and doors to the balcony, upstairs we had a very nice king sized bed, tv and separate bathroom which we felt was nice but could do with modernising as their was a bath with shower attached to it ,this might be a problem if you are over six feet tall as the ceiling is quite low.
The best part about staying in the duplex suite though was the access to the level lounge in which you could have soft drinks and canapes during the day and alcoholic drinks from 5pm - 8pm this is good considering the high price of drinks in the hotel and also offers free internet access we also had access to the royal pool which is part of the package for guests staying in the villas again this was great for us as the main pool tended to be busy with families, this pool however was for adults of 16 years and over and was strictly adhered to by the staff, who also provided towels and water upon your arrival also at no time during our stay did we have to rush down for a sun lounger as there were plenty available in this area.
The beach is quite small and looked very crowded with guests but you can walk along the path which takes you past all the the hotels along this stretch of coast, again there is good security in these areas and most of the hotels had beach frront bar/cafes.
The staff at the hotel were excellent always smiling and could not do enough for you.
The bad points of the hotel are the prices of drinks which are very high as were the restaurant prices, however you could take the 5 minute walk to The Bali Collection which has a selection of restaurants at very reasonable prices, i think the hotels is this area should take a good look at their very high prices as they surely must be missing out on business.
The hotel did provide some entertainment and had themed nights, we especially like the piano man in the Lobby lounge who was happy to take requests which we found very amusing, the Bali collection offers some local entertainment during meals but the area tends to die off at around 11pm and the nightlife is very low key and perhaps not best suited to younger people who like clubbing.
Overall it`s a great place to stay for couples and families and i would definitely recommend it for a quiet stay in Bali.

We recently had a fantastic stay at the Melia Bali and would highly recommend the hotel to those looking for a relaxing get away. In my opinion, the website and photographs available on line do not do justice to either the buildings or the grounds which are both maintained to a very high standard.

The hotel staff were extremely courteous, helpful and eager to make your stay an enjoyable one. Every aspect of our stay was pleasurable from the poolside activities to the various restaurants on site. You can be as pampered or as active as you choose during the daytime.

Prices for food, drinks, treatments etc are very high at the hotel in comparison to the local area but I think this is typical of many resort hotels and there are alternatives just a short walk from the gates if you prefer to save a few (hundred thousand) rupees.

The local area is very quiet and nightlife is low key ,both in and out of the hotel, so this is not the resort for those wanting to party hard. However, if like us you are looking for somewhere to unwind with a great variety of international food and culture close by, then this is a great choice.

I read some reviews before booking that mentioned problems with damp. Our room contained a de-humidifier that was empited daily by the staff. Remembering the geographical location and humidity levels of Nusa Dua, I thought this was acceptable and there were certainly no problems visible to us. Again, the rooms were cleaned and serviced to a very high standard.

Overall, I would give this hotel a 9 out of 10. I would have peferred a resort with slighty more happening after dark but that is not a reflection of the hotel, more Nusa Dua itself.

In between booking and travelling we had read a number of negative reviews on Tripadvisor and were quite apprehensive before our arrival - we had after all spent a lot of money on this holiday. First impressions at the hotel are good. Security is tight, the hotel staff are pleasant and welcoming and the entrance area and public rooms are spectacular. We were shown to our room walking through the internal courtyards which are lovely with their sand message areas and fountains. Our room was fine, but small for three adults, and we were cramped throughout our stay. My daughters bed was two single matresses on top of each other. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was pleasant, well lit with bath, shower, plenty of towels and hotel cosmetics. Storage is good in both the room and the bathroom. Small bottles of water are supplied daily but you'll need to supplement these, and it's much cheaper to buy water in the village or in the Bali Collection. The main issue at this hotel is that everything is way overpriced. We were shocked at the difference in prices between the hotel and the village, and the "hygiene and standards" excuse that the hotel churns out is simply not good enough. In the end we enjoyed our stay by making the most of the activities and facilities that were included in our room rate: we took part in the free entertainment programme and attended Indonesian cookery classes or fruit carving demonstrations. We went to watch the evening entertainments such as the fire dance or the Balinese dancers. You can see all of these without paying for the meals. The coffee shop El Patio bizarrely is reluctant to serve coffee. We asked for a cup at 11.00am one morning to clear confusion and consternation amongst the staff.
Other posters have mentioned the Bali Collection and this is certainly worth a visit. It has much better exchange rates for currency and travellers cheques along with a variety of shops and eateries. However for eating you would do as well to focus on Bualbu Village a further 5 minutes along the road. The restaurants here are really good value for money and if you phone they'll collect you and take you back to your hotel after you eat.
The hotel laundry costs are ridiculous - take your stuff to the village laundry and it'll be washed and ironed at a fraction of the hotel prices in 24 hours. Cheers bar was the nearest thing we found to a pub with pool tables and sport on TV.
We went on tours with Erwen one of the taxi drivers at the gate. We apid $30 for a day tour which covered his time and petrol. We obliged him by going into a couple of shops but when we said we had had enough he didn't pester us to go into any more. He took us to the Balinese dancing, the coffee plantation, and the volcano for a very overpriced lunch. We know that he will have been given a cut of the bill and saw that as his additional fee for the day. Our tour of the Temple was excellent but the staff there will lend you a sarong and you do not need to buy from the ladies along the street.
If you are staying here for a while, as we were, I would suggest the following things to enhance your stay:
1. Take small binoculars to make the most of the fabulous views out to sea including the next islands on a clear day.
2. Take a small coffee perculator - coffee, milk, cream etc can all be bought at the Bali Collection and you will get a much better drink than the hotel can offer.
3. Take lots of books - the number of English books in the hotel library are minimal.
We had a lovely holiday and I would recommend this hotel to you.
