“Superb Location, Service and Facilities”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

This is one of the newest resort hotels in Bali and it does not dissapoint. We have had the pleasure to stay as a family twice and at both times we stayed in beachview rooms. The rooms are very luxurious with top of the line ammenities. The Mulia resort must have one of the biggest fitness center with any body hardly using it. The fitness center is as good, if not better, than any full fledged fitness club. Facilities and activities for kids are plentiful with attentive and well trained employees. The pools are beautiful with the main infinite pool right on the beachfront. Non motorized sports activities are available at the beach. Lots of lifeguards on duty at all time. Food is just top of the line, excellent internationl breakfast buffet at the Cafe and delicious but authentic Indonesian cuisine as well as International dishes available as a la carte as well.

My stay didn't begin with the best experience, when I emailed the hotel asking for the different menus for their restaurants , as their web site is full of pictures and not much else. I was told "no we can't do that even though you are staying with us as people might copy them " - really? How are you to know if you want to eat there or what their prices are? I pointed out that every other restaurant and hotel has both their menus and prices available on their websites but "no" it was.!! We ate at Soleil which was nice, but nothing like the restaurants in Seminyak although the prices are very reasonable for a 5* resort. There was no atmosphere at all even though it is beautifully decorated, and the very limited wine list was even more expensive than is normal in Bali! The cakes and food at the Deli is absolutely fantastic and this place is a little gem in an oasis of "buffets"!! Everyone is raving about the breakfast buffet - which is like feeding time at the zoo - great if you like queuing! It's probably fine if you like Peking Duck or curry for breakfast but the European food was the same every day - even the juices.
This hotel was 90-95% Asian guests with large family groups with lots and lots of kids , and the food reflects that. I've not found this anywhere else in Bali and I think this definitely alters the dynamics of the hotel. It's our first stay in Nusa Dua and whilst the beaches are the nicest by far and the hotels the most glamourous - the ambience is pretty sterile especially in the bars etc.

There is no doubt that the hotel is beautiful and the rooms are gorgeous. The only room issue is the lighting is fairly limited for reading in bed. In my daughters twin room next door it's even worse as there is only one light between the 2 beds. Otherwise the decor and amenities are spot on. We had the standard room but the view up the hill to their villas was fine. We were on the top floor #9. There are also signs everywhere telling you what NOT to do, NOT to wear etc the lists go on, which I find pretty off putting - but I feel sums up this hotel as a whole. It is not a hotel for individuals who appreciate diversity and uniqueness.

In short, I think that service level in bali as a whole, as deteriorated as compared to a couple of years ago.
Given that the hotel is new, the rooms and facilities are rather new and clean. They have a good breakfast spread and dinner at the cafe was pretty good too.
When we checked out the beach, we found that the sand was rather coarse and when we asked the lifeguards, we were told that this is a 'new beach'.
I had an awful experience upon check-out where we were told by the reception that they had found a soiled towel in our room and had to charge us USD64 for this damage!!!
They showed us the towel which had probably gotten some colour stains from my son*s swimming costume but it definitely does not warrant the hotel to charge us USD64 for it!! We tried reasoning with them but the reception gave us some excuses that itis their standard policy. When I wanted to escalate the matter to speak to the centre manager, they claimed that he was out.
For the five/six stars reputation that the Mulia has, I am disappointed to have received rather poor service overall and to be charged an exorbitant amount for a soiled towel..

First, this is a very huge hotel. It was very luxurious. The food is delicious, one of the best that i've had in Bali hotels. On the other hand, its size can be a downfall for me. It needs some effort to get to the hotel room from the lobby and to the breakfast restaurant. Check-in took quite some time.
i also somehow loose the feeling that i am staying in Bali during my stay there.

The staff are all nice and greets us with smile but i understand that it would be very difficult to get personal attention that I get from other smaller hotel.

One negative point during my stay, one night we came back to the hotel from dinner quite late together with a family friend also staying at the hotel. Both family have small kids sleeping and we have to carry them. We ask the concierge if they could drive us in the golf cart to and drop us off near the room. They did not help us because golf cart is only for guest staying at the mulia and villa.well....we know that. But no one is using the cart, so i expect the staff could be more flexible in situation like this.

Firstly, this place is HUGE. I mean really HUGE. However, the army of staff waiting to cater to your every need do seem to make the Mulia feel more intimate. There is nothing negative I can say about the room, staff, facilities and food.
If you are looking for a resort that is away from the bustle of Kuta/Seminyak, this is it.
A word of caution, the Mulia is not for those looking for the super-cheap holidays Bali is famous for - it is a 5 star resort with 5 star prices. This is not a complaint; only a caveat and I swear it's worth paying the money for top quality.

1. The Mulia is mercenary and mainly concerned with making money.
- You are usually asked for your room number before service is provided (so that they determine if you are just a plain hotel guest or a villa guest, and to charge you).
- You will be charged for the smallest thing, like water at a restaurant. There is no tap water option. Water will cost 35,000 rupiah = SG$4.
- Late check-out (between 1-5pm) will cost half of published room rate.

2. Segregation.
- We were made to feel like second class citizens because we were merely hotel guests.
- The private pool, private beach, express lanes for restaurants are in plain sight of the second class hotel guests.

3. Terrible service.
- Room service threw away my face wash after they cleaned the room.
- As in #1, you will be asked your room number before service is offered.

4. Lousy Concierge
- Concierge was not able to make a reservation at a Seminyak restaurant, when we called and were able to do so ourselves. Best part is, Concierge never got back to us about whether a reservation was successful until 10pm that evening (after we returned from dinner at said restaurant), where they slipped a note under our door and said they were unable to obtain a reservation and booked us one the following night instead (when we were checking out and would have left Bali).
- When we enquired about late checkout, the front desk said they will call and get back to us. And they never returned the call.

5. Lousy beach
- Sand is coarse, the beach was unfinished, and there was a tractor working and polluting the air with its fumes right next to the "poor man's" area of the beach.

6. Queue to eat breakfast
- There is one breakfast buffet restaurant, and we waited 20 minutes in line to enter. Resort guests can skip queue and get priority entry.

7. Limited Wifi in room
- Only 2 devices are allowed for our hotel room, and we had to login with a password after a certain time elapsed. So we were logging on to wifi in our own room about 5 times a day.

8. Restaurants are not 'affordable'
- Restaurants at The Mulia were pricey compared to similar restaurants in Bali. But guests are held captive because it's far away from other restaurants. A glass of coconut water costs 100,000 rupiah = SG$11 (And it tasted stale). A bowl of ramen at Edogin costs SG$18 (It tasted so-so).

9. Crowded, unromantic
- This only applies if you were a regular hotel guest. Most facilities are crowded, because hotel guests are confined to only 1 pool at the beach, so it's super crowded and there are lots of noisy children.

10. Far from fun
- It's half an hour away from Seminyak (45mins if there is a traffic jam), more than half hour away from Ubud, etc. You can't easily step out for meals, so you're sitting duck for their inhouse restaurants.

Overall: It's a perfect place to stay if you like the Cruise ship experience. Where you don't leave the boat, feast at buffets all day, and it's kid-friendly.

We stayed at the Mulia Resort for 7 nights for a family holiday. The staff are friendly, welcoming and very efficient. The services at the hotel are great and the gym and it's staff are brilliant. A special thanks to Arif and Indra who run great aqua aerobics sessions, I would highly recommend it!
Their attention to detail makes all the difference.
The rooms are spacious and well equipped and the bathroom is very luxurious.
We will definitely be back.
