“Needs modernisation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

Spent 5days here , very quiet & peaceful, rooms need uplifting, old furniture, bathroom needs a revamp, taps are falling off shower head, comes out a trickle, no entertainment, have to go else where.Beds were sizeable & comfortable. Breakfast was good , plentiful a good variety. Staff were always pleasant and helpful, full marks to them. There are better hotels up the road .

We have just returned from a 5 night stay in this hotel which was booked as a special deal. It is located at the far south end of Sanur, on the beach set in lovely gardens. There are two swimming pools with plenty of seating around. Unfortunately the pool water was very warm so not refreshing. Access was easy with the complimentary shuttle bus to Hardies or drivers at the entry who are employed to exclusively service the hotel patrons. The rooms are spacious and simply furnished. We were given a ground floor room which we found noisy at times as movement from the room above and next door could be heard. The shower recess had some mouldy areas on the tiles which were from lack of cleaning and the floors were gone over with a mop each day but no attention was given to actually cleaning spills etc. On one occasion we were left with no towels and had to phone housekeeping to get some. We were not supplied with black tea - just chamomile and just 2 sachets of creamer for coffee. We ordered room service on 3 occasions and were happy with the quality and freshness of the food. The breakfast buffet was not extensive but had enough options for most tastes.
The staff were always pleasant and helpful.
We would probably not choose to stay in this hotel again.

This was our 17th Holiday in week 40 and 41 2013 at hotel Mercure resort Sanur, and as usual we spend 2 weeks there.Smiling and polite staff both in reception, restarant and housekeeping.
We enjoy the exellent brekfast , the Beach and our balcony in the silent evenings, where the only sound is from the waves against the reef. A real relaxing Holiday. We hope to be back many times in the future. We also love the balinese people. Always smiling and polite.

The Mercure Sanur is not a great hotel and I expected more of it. When we arrived for our first week, it took al long time to get our room ready, this is not a bad thing necessarily at 14.00, but after a 17 our trip, reception shouldn't promise things and let people wait for more than an our. We did get a welcome drink though.
We stayed in a deluxe room, which was really spacious and had a nice kingside bed, good bathroom and great shower. So no worries there.
The wifi is terrible, in all the restaurants we went, off premises, the wifi connection was better. I think this is really poor for a Mercure in 2013! It is free, but I'd rather pay for wifi, then have this rubbish connection. When you have a business to run, this makes it nearly impossible. I asked if they also had a paid option, but this is not the case!
The breakfast is of a low standard. There is little choice and the bread was old and hard, nearly every day. The cook, cooking your eggs, is not very friendly and doesn't seem to enjoy his work at all. He slams the egg on the hotplate and prepared them with little care, which isn't nice when you do pay quite a bit of money and your on holiday. We also had to argue with the hostess at breakfast every morning that we actually did pay for breakfast. She couldn't find us on the list and automatically assumed that we didn't pay so presented us with a bill to sign, so it could be charged to the room. After day 3, it got so insulting and embarrassing that I went to reception to complain. They promised to solve the issue. Next day, same problem! We left the hotel and came back after 7 days at Lombok. The first day at breakfast: same problem!!
This second week we got a different room which was more secluded and had a few problems. The sink was leaking, the ac was really noisy, the fridge was extremely noisy and the shower drain didn't work properly. I went to reception again to address the issue of breakfast and the room. I must say, the room was fixed in the afternoon and all the problems where taken care of and breakfast was solved as well, after some firmer words on my part. I was really fed up at this time!
When you want to have breakfast or lunch, you can better go to, either the "breadbasket", a really good French bakery (take the free shuttle to Hardy's and cross the street and walk 30-50 meters) or the "sea Breeze warung" (just 5min walk from hotel). The restaurants on the beach to your left, they serve food, all day, as well. These are cheaper options and you get better food. Lunch at the Mercure was sometimes good and sometimes bad. Had a great cheeseburger and burned toast on my club-sandwich.
I must also agree with some of the reviewers before me, the staff is not that friendly and doesn't really seem to care. In all of Bali and Lombok, everybody is so friendly! But this is not reflected in the Mercure. I brought back my beach towels to the counter, and the staff-member who has to give back your towel-cards was on a cellphone and didn't hang up the phone or put it down. I think this is really rude, and I haven't encountered this in any hotel ever!!!
Housekeeping is sloppy as well, they forgot refill towels and coffee on numerous occasions.

So next time on Bali, a different hotel!!

Room Tip: Go for a deluxe room if you can, only 4 rooms in building then! Nice an spacious as well. Try to get...

Dear Mr. Roderick_NL

Thank you for taking the time to write this in depth review. After going through your file and bookings, we are able to point out that not only did you book room only on every occasion that upon checkout you paid for the breakfast. I am happy to point out that your review is full of untruth and as the General Manager I am happy to discuss not in this public forum as to point out other matters written about. I am happy to take correspondence in any way.

We have also bought this review to the attention of trip advisor.
