It's an odd situation to write a report praising this hotel for all it's little touches and to criticize it for the ignoring the big things. This hotel is quite expensive for it's facilities at around $30 a night. It was taken over by a diving school, and it seems that hotel has been forgotten about since it's new coat of paint.

The rooms:
Each room has hot water shower, western toilet, air con and fridge.
What is strange is that only some rooms have a dvd player, the rest have an old tv with internal aerial. However, there is no difference in price.
The beds are dreadful, they creek everytime you move, the balsa wood support holding up the mattress is cracked or broken and really needs to be changed. Over the past few years I've stayed here 3 or 4 times, purely as my other choices were fully booked, so I've experienced several of the rooms.
There is no duvet supplied just bed sheets which can lead to a chilly night's sleep.
The positive things are the little touches, a basket of complementary cosmetics, mosquito repellent, detergent, cotton wool etc and the cheap mini bar in the fridge. Beer is rp 15,000 a bottle with no service charge.

Hotel facilities:
The good has to be the size of the pool. It's big and offers shade and sunlight. Unfortunately since the hotel was leased by the dive school Crystal Divers, they have removed a lot of the greenery and trees, as well as the traditional balinese bale (wooden hut) from the sides of the pool area. However, you can still find shade from the sun.
The other problem with the pool is you can't really use it very often as there are constant diving lessons taking place. During one day when it was raining a lot so we couldn't leave the hotel, we counted 6 different groups, which meant the pool was pretty much out of action for the day.

Breakfast:
This is one of the hotel's plus points. A big hearty breakfast of eggs and bacon with a choice of cereals, unlimited tea and coffee and freshly baked bread and cakes.

No free wifi. Quite unbelievable considering that almost every hotel in this range and restaurant in Sanur offers free wifi, this hotel doesn't. Instead you have to buy vouchers at reception.

Service:
The local Indonesian staff are exceedingly friendly although seem very terrified of their new Danish owners. They were happy to fetch extra sheets for us and provide an extra towel for swimming. Unfortunately most of the things that are wrong with this hotel, are beyond their powers, so we just asked if they had another room we could move to because are bed was so badly broken.

Location:
It's on the main road going through Sanur, and there are hundreds of restaurants, bars and shops located within a leisurely 10 minute walk. The beach is also only 10 minutes walk. Hardy's supermarket is located 5 minutes away.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel given it's pricing of $30 plus a night. The price is non-negotiable even in the quiet months of the year when there are only 2 or 3 guests.

If they fix the beds, upgrade the room facilities and remember that they are not just operating a dive school but also a hotel, then I am sure things will improve. However, given that all you see and hear about is Crystal Divers, it does not look like the current owners are interested in increasing their guests satisfaction and care only about the dollars they are making from diving. A real shame because this has the potential to be a great little friendly boutique hotel.

I would recommend the Little Pond or Swastika 2 in Sanur. Both cheaper with better facilities. If you're really stuck and everywhere is fully booked then Santai hotel is hardly the worse place to stay in the world, it's just not good value for money.
