My wife and I ambled into Mama Putu one morning after a healthy four-kilometre walk.
The Supremo for Culinary Affairs (that’d be Carolyn, my wife) and I ordered the same, both being partial to a banana pancake and watermelon juice for breakfast. However, being very early the watermelons hadn’t arrived so we got the papaya (pawpaw) juice instead. Lovely! The pancake was puffy and had fresh bananas, topped with honey. It was so good we came back the second day and ordered again (watermelons were in this time; very nice!).
On our third visit in as many days, this time edging closer to lunch-time we went for the bigger breakfast: mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs-any-style, bacon, toast and coffee and juice. Awesome! The Director of Porcine Gluttony asked for extra bacon (10,000idr) and ended up with half a pig on her plate as it already came with three rashers of bacon! Duly satiated, we continued our excursion.
Mama Putu’s restaurant is down the southern end of Sanur Beach up from the car park at the bottom end. It’s worth the walk. Her English is good and the food both excellent and conservatively priced.
In fact, after Nyepi, we went down there to see how her dinner was. I had Mie Goreng, the Team Leader of Piscine Delights had the Seafood Parade which consisted of two steaks, one of barracuda, the other of tuna, accompanied by noodles and vegetables (see photo). She loved it! Filling, flavourful and 40,000idr.
Mama Putu runs a comprehensive menu, covering all the Indonesian and Balinese foods and some imported beef and pork steaks. All fresh ingredients, all cooked in an open kitchen.
Good walk, reasonable service, reasonable selection, great prices.
