Tandjung Sari Hotel gets top of 4 Stars rating from me. Having said that and given the choice of staying in any 5 Stars modern hotel in Bali, my undisputed choice would still be Tandjung Sari.
It is only here, in Asia's original boutique hotel (built in the early 60ties) where one can experience authentic Balinese lifestyle and charm. It's rustic local architecture with it's blend of simplicity and sophistication, it's gardens with it's lush varieties of plants and flowers, balinese sculptures and carvings and beachside front are all beautifully integrated within the grounds. Evenings sitting at the Bar or on the terrace looking out to sea is quite magical.
We stayed in a delightful Deluxe chalet with our own porch and little garden. Food, both western and asian cuisine is excellent . Special mention must be given to the warm service from staff...One feels it is given " from the heart "
It is here, only in Bali that the words of William Henry Davies come to my mind.
" What is this world if full of care there is no time to stand and stare"
Leisure is simple and yet so beautiful .

This is a really lovely old style of resort. It's very classic and feels like it caters for families or those of us who want a fairly chilled out vacation.

Some of the rooms/bathrooms have been re-done - mine hadn't but I liked it, it had a very vintage 70s vibe. Very clean, well-organized - solidly delicious breakfast. And right on a lovely private beach. What's not to like?

Oh and a great spa where residence get 50% off!

Room Tip: I stayed in room 11. Tucked away and quiet.

This hotel was the pioneer in the villa concept. Originally a private home, villas were added by the owner. Situated on the beach it has good views from the restaurant and you can eat on the beach if you wish. The staff is accommodating although the service could be faster at the restaurant. We stayed at villa 11 which could have used a bit of updating but was certainly nice and charming. The location of the room was good.

Room Tip: No fitness center.

Stayed for one night in a Two storey Garden Villa in transit through Bali. We were situated next to the kitchen/building work which didn't bother us as we arrived around lunchtime & left early the next day. However if we'd been staying longer it would have been quite annoying due to the banging & clattering from the construction site. The rooms were clean, spacious, & there was everything you should need for a comfortable stay including efficient air conditioning. Our bedroom was situated on the first floor & the sitting room on the ground floor not as stated in another review, maybe each room defers. I booked through booking.com & arranged my transfers direct with the hotel at a cost of £7 each way for the car. Not sure it was great value for money & I'm sure if I'd looked further I would have found a better deal. Nevertheless I have no complaints as the staff were friendly, courteous & nothing was too much trouble. The food & drinks in the restaurant were delicious, Lunch consisting of a Club sandwich, Phad Thai & 5 small beers at the bargain price of 17.00. I had Mojjitto costing £ 4.50 which was probably the best I've had in a long time. A nice, friendly, clean place but not sure Sanur was our type of place.

Room Tip: Ask not to be situated by the restaurant/kitchen

As others have said, choose your room carefully. It's low season so we've been happy with the Garden Sea View (aka room 24) but I wouldn't recommend it in a busier season. It's situated between the kitchen and walking path, so smells and sounds are all around you.
Everything else was as good as others have said.

We stayed here on the last few days of our honeymoon. Here's a low down of the pros vs cons of the Tandjung Sari:

Pros
-Right next to Sanur beach
-It also connects to the main road on the other end
-The staff are very nice, friendly and useful
-Breakfast is great
-We got 50% discount on our massage at the spa next door
-Room deco very nice
-We had a beach side bungalow and the upstairs was heavenly

Cons
-The toilet in the bungalow isn't particularly great. Very small and claustrophobic.
-Shower curtain a little moldy
-No TV in the room.

Hope this helps.

First of all, please notice we stayed there back in August 2007, however Tripadvisor doesn't allow to go back so further.
Anyway, we remember the hotel as a nice old style hotel. Few villa style rooms. Right on the beach. Quiet. Charmy.
Our villa was superb. Two floors. Colonial-balines style. Living room upstairs. Bedroom downstaris. Nice bath. Quiet.
Food was fantastic. We had one night the duck baked in a sand oven. Had to be ordered 24 hours in advance! It take a while to be cooked! It was delicious.
The service was slow, some of the waiters had been working there for 40 years. But always nice and smiley. No rush style.
To have breakfast almost on the beach was magic.
The beach is nice. Nice sand. However water is not deep at all. Actually it was difficult to swim. very shallow waters.
The barefoot walk along the promenade was also delicious.
Finally 120€ a night back in 2007 was a bargain.
Enjoy it!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Tandjung Sari was opened in 1962 and began as an extension of the family home of Indonesian proprietor Wija Wawo-Runtu. The hotel was named Tandjung Sari (cape of flowers) and initially developed as Bali's very first boutique property to be managed as a small family business catering to the needs of a privileged clientele. The scale of the entire complex was purposely kept low rise and the articulation of space together with the rambling indirectness of the path ways has generated a relaxed, leisurely pace. Operational for nearly half of a century, Tandjung Sari showcases an eclectic collection of rare Balinese and Dutch colonial artifacts as a tribute to the glorious past. ... more   less
