I have stayed at the Tandjung Sari many times over the past 30 years, this last visit took the cake literally!! I was celebrating a significant birthday and I cannot imagine a better party could have been had ANYWHERE.. there were 40 of us for the most magical, delicious and heavenly evening. Most of us stayed at the Tanjung Sari for 4 days and were made to feel like Kings and Queens by the attentive, charming and efficient staff.
Because the hotel is relatively small, there is an intimacy that doesn't exist in the bigger hotels, the location is great, away from the hubbub of Kuta but there is still plenty to do and a great massage can be had just down the beach at Sindu markets, while you are there get the full treatment and enjoy ask for Ayu Agung and say Alice sent you!
The Tandjung Sari is definitely our hotel of choice in Bali

Driving down Tandjung Sari's long driveway to be greeted by the warm smiling faces of the reception staff and the welcoming sound of the gong we knew we had returned to Paradise. This was our 33rd Bali trip, our first was in 1982, and our 5th stay at Tandjung Sari we would not stay anywhere else in Sanur now the beach location is perfect..

Set in exotic gardens Tandjung Sari's charming bungalows exude serenity. The rooms are furnished in traditional Dutch Colonial style ours had a comfortable king size bed covered by mosquito net, spacious bathroom with huge bath and double vanity with both indoor and out door showers. Our huge terrace was perfect for relaxing on the day bed with cooling ceiling fan . It was immaculately clean with a turn-down service of an evening.

Breakfast is ordered from the menu with a good variety of choice. We also enjoyed lunch there most day especially from their Tapas menu washed down with a glass of local Hatton's Rose!. They also do a good Caffe Macchiato. Twice a month they have a traditional children's dance performance with a Rijastfel dinner which is just superb. Yes service can be a tad slow on some days what does it matter we are on Bali time!

The beach side pool is small we prefer the beach which is very private and the chairs are well spaced. We loved the fact that there were no "Chair Hogs" we always got a chair no matter the time of day. In complete contrast we noticed on our morning walk that at the near by Griya Santrian by 8am there was not a chair to be had all reserved with towels and most owners no where to be seen!

I cannot praise the genuinely friendly staff enough we were always greet by name. The two "older" ladies who have been at the Beach Restaurant for many years are absolute delights. Wayan, one of the hotel's drivers, is fantastic we have used him on many occasions even just to go shopping in Seminyak.
Our last two stays this year we noticed repeat guest from previous stays which is testament to a good hotel.
Just a word of warning when booking if you Google Tandjung Sari the first entry to come up tandjungsari.com is NOT the official Tandjung Sari site it is a booking agency who fortuitously registered the name! Tandjung Sari's web site is

Tandjung sari was a last minute booking while being impossible to find descent accommodation in Seminyak. So we decided to stay there for 2 nights before moving to our original destination. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff who spoke good english and were ready to serve us with a smile. We stayed in a garden bungalow at a very good rate ($180/night). THe garden is so nice with its own gazebo and the bungalow really resembles a traditional hut but all amenities. Thatched roof, plenty of woodwork and attention to detail. I particularly liked the bathroom and the outside shower. It was very clean and tidy. I only made it to breakfast once but was good. THe beach is just in front of the hotel which offers sunbeds and umbrellas. Sanur beach is a quieter place than other resort areas in Bali but is just great for a quiet start or end to your trip. You can also rent bikes and ride around the town which will cost you about $6/day. If I visit Sanur again, I'll be sure to book this hotel which is both cosy and genuinely Balinese in its style.

As a yearly (sometimes, twice yearly) traveller to Bali I have learnt to never anticipate anything when it comes to accommodation. Generally speaking I have become accustomed to inspecting a property well in advance of making a reservation. This strategy saw my wife and I evaluate the suitability of the Tandjung Sari Hotel during our stay in Sanur in January 2009. We approached the property from the beachfront mid-morning and on crossing the threshold around the pool/bar area were promptly stopped by hotel security. Fair enough. On requesting free passage to reception to seek information and gain an inspection, we were refused and turned away. We were told that all entry to the hotel needed to be made from the main road entrance. Not quite fair since there was idle hotel (restraurant/bar) staff available to escort us through the grounds. Undaunted, and still enamoured by the hotel's idyllic beachside facade, we journeyed through the neighbouring hotels' grounds - unescorted and unchallenged by any security - to eventually arrive at Tandjung Sari's reception desk.

Here one expects that a hotel displays its best "face", but once again although the facade was impressive we were greeted less than cordially by a Balinese gentleman at the reception desk. It was with great difficulty that we managed to persuade him that we were interested in inspecting a range of rooms with a view to making a reservation for our 2010 vacation. The standard rooms were unimpressive, being quite some distance from the pool and beach, whilst the last room we inspected - their premier beachfront villa, was beautifully located and most appealing. Strange then that before we had entered the threshold our receptionist/guide intimated that this villa would be "well and truly out of our price range". Why was he so keen to deter us? He was certainly correct about the tariff but we were still interested.

When it came time to plan our 2010 vacation, we decided to indulge ourselves for 3 nights at Tandjung Sari and were lucky enough to reserve the well appointed beachfront villa, and, after touring around some of our favourite Bali locations, were looking forward to our Sanur indulgence. Arriving at reception was a sobering experience. The typical Bali warmth we had been experiencing during our past few weeks suddenly dissipated when we were coolly and ceremoniously escorted to our villa. There was no welcome drink (unheard of in Bali tourism) and no staff cordiality. Maybe it was our personality (although that has never been a problem wherever else we have travelled throughout the island) and/or maybe we were expecting too much from these luxurious surroundings and sky-high prices.

To be fair, our two-story villa was nice, clean and comfortable, but far too spacious for our humble needs, but we had chosen this particular villa to indulge ourselves so we were aware and prepared that such surroundings came at a price. What we were not prepared for was the palpable sterility of all the staff. Yes, they were attired perfectly in traditional Balinese costume and they ceremoniously stood at their respective stations in the bar and the restaurant area but there was no "bonhomie". The normal "happy-go- lucky" guest-staff interaction was missing. We may as well have been attended to by robots. Our cocktails were served at the bar without one "conversational" word being spoken. And this situation remained the case 45 minutes later. We were not even asked if we would like a table for dinner.

Breakfast was included in the tariff so it was with some enthusiasm that we chose a nice shady table beside, and overlooking, Sanur beach. One can hardly ask for a more idyllic setting for the first meal of the day. Three staff were on duty to service our table and two other tables (also couples) - hardly a hectic situation. After all, Tanjung Sari is listed as a five-star establishment so breakfast should be a worthwhile experience. Over 20 years of experiencing breakfasts in Bali, one knows not to expect too much but surely not here. Waitress #1 came with the menus and proceeded to take our orders - even going so far as to repeat the orders back. 10 minutes later waitress #2 presents with our fruit juice. Both juices were wrong, but at this stage we were extremely thirsty so we decided not to make a fuss. Another 10 minutes elapses before our fruit platters arrive - this time via waitress #3. They are beautifully presented but once again they are not what we had ordered. Our main courses consisted of fried eggs (me) and croissants (my wife). My wife actually received her croissants (albeit without her coffee) whilst my fried eggs had strangely become an omelette. This is the type of mix-up we have experienced in the more remote areas of Bali, but definitely NOT at Tandjung Sari. After we had eaten I confronted waitress #1 who had taken our original order and expressed our disbelief that the kitchen had only managed to get one item correct. She said that she was sorry but it had been a miscommunication with "her friend" (waitress #2). Now, not to let it rest there, I confronted waitress #2 to ask why our fruit order was wrong and why waitress #3 had delivered an omelette rather that my fried eggs. She said she had been busy and had asked waitress #3 to handle our order. Talk about "passing the buck" - BIG TIME.

It's fair to say that during the course of the next 3 days we spent as little time as possible in the bar and restaurant. Especially when you consider the fact that their simplest of Indonesian dishes was nearly three times more expensive than their most expensive competitor along the beachfront.

We did however take our "free" breakfast each morning, served by different staff and on each occasion some component of our food order was incorrect. It was so bad that getting a simple cup of Balinese coffee to arrive on our table within a reasonable timeframe was nigh-on impossible.

Departure time had arrived and with the room cleaning staff hanging about to complete their duty, my wife and I set to with the final stuffing of the suitcase. Finally upon completion we proceed to reception toting our entire luggage. There we were greeted by a female receptionist who started laughing. Incensed, I said to her "why do you laugh?" She replied that she thought it funny that I was carrying our luggage. I agreed with her but then promptly pointed out that none of her staff had ventured to help. It wasn't as if they didn't know we were checking-out. The room staff in fact had been trying to get us out for the past hour.

No doubt there has been and will continue to be tourists that speak glowingly about this establishment. Our three days could best be summed up as TERRIBLY DISAPOINTING.

We stayed there on July 2009, it was a great hotel, despite of the secret location, I would put Tandjung Sari as one of the best hotel we've ever stayed in, great service, nice bungalows and nice bedroom, overall it was a paradise. We'll surely be back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Tandjung Sari was opened in 1962 and began as an extension of the family home of Indonesian proprietor Wija Wawo-Runtu. The hotel was named Tandjung Sari (cape of flowers) and initially developed as Bali's very first boutique property to be managed as a small family business catering to the needs of a privileged clientele. The scale of the entire complex was purposely kept low rise and the articulation of space together with the rambling indirectness of the path ways has generated a relaxed, leisurely pace. Operational for nearly half of a century, Tandjung Sari showcases an eclectic collection of rare Balinese and Dutch colonial artifacts as a tribute to the glorious past. ... more   less
