We wanted some quite time in Sanur before moving elsewhere in Bali for a family wedding.

Over our 5 days, we met about 10 other people doing the exact same thing.

Bali was not really on our radar and I’ve heard mixed reports. Our brief was to find a place to relax, that has some activities and some shopping available should we wish to do that as well.

The property was recommended by our travel agent and absolutely met the brief. Whilst traditionally Balinese, parts of the property had been refurbed, and had the lipstick in the right areas.

We were in the older part (Garden wing) but that was fine, the rooms were large and clean.

The property has three pools, one of which is divided into two with kiddy pool. This is the main pool and has a swim up bar. The novelty is pretty hard to resist.

We have a 2 year old boy and he loved running in the gardens and swimming in the kiddy pool. Parents be aware, there are no pool fences (I don’t think they exist in Bali) so keep an eye on the little ones. Also, parents, the bikeway in front of the property can be extremely busy, so watch out for that.

On arrival you are greeted with a welcome cocktail and a face towel. A nice touch after a long flight. There are two restaurants on site which are good, and about 20% more expensive than the outside restaurants.

The property has a lot of return visitors and this is always a sign of a good thing. Its quiet, well maintained and full of that lovely Bali service. If you want to relax by the pool, this is the place for you. Once you talk a walk down the strip or along the bike path, you will see that the other hotels are realy old, and their pools and restaurants aren't as good. This is when you rea;ose that you have made the right choice.

Something worth considering:
1-Use the hotel massage service. You will meet ‘a new best friend’ on the beach named Mary, who operates a massage/pedicure place next door to the property. Whilst she is nice, she will tell you that hotel massage is too expensive. Don’t bother. They are so busy catching up on gossip, it’s impossible to relax. Pay the extra and relax!

2 –The glass bottom boats are a waste of time. If you have seen the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, seeing the reef in Sanur will make you weep. The coral is bleached and the water has coating of gasoline (it did the day I was there).

3 – The ladies with the market stall near the pool are lovely and you won’t find the items cheaper down the street.

We have stayed here 3 times and have loved it each time. We have stayed in the Garden Wing rooms and the Beachfront rooms and could not fault either. The pool areas are always clean and the pool bar is fantastic. We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant which is in a beautiful position looking across the beach. There are lots of breakfast choices and the food was of a good quality. We ate there sometimes in the evening and the meals were always delicious and reasonably priced. The location is excellent - with the boardwalk stretching both ways you can walk a long way and if you need a coffee stop there are heaps of hotels you can walk through. It is only 15 minutes by taxi to the Kuta area and there is lots of good shopping and restaurants around the hotel.

Room Tip: Garden room are quieter but the Beachfront rooms very handy to the restaurant.

Beautiful hotel with friendly and professional staff ! Highly recommendable. The rooms plus the hotel are very clean , there are 3 beautiful pools and one with a great pool bar ! The drivers associated with the hotel are very helpful and their fares compare reasonably with other taxis . We had a very enjoyable stay and will definitely return here.

After exhausted research and narrowing it down to the Griya and the Puri, we opted for the Griya due to its location and wasn't disappointed being within easy walking to restaurants and markets. Loved the location right on the beach with the main pool and restaurants overlooking the water. There were plenty of sun lounges both at the pool and on the beach. We had a beach wing room which overlooked the beautiful gardens, pool and out to the ocean. Loved sitting in the beachfront lounges during happy hours drinking cocktails. Whoever wrote the review about weak cocktails must have had a 'mocktail' as my Mai Tai's were extremely strong. The barman was also happy to make any cocktail not on the menu, so long as you knew the ingredients. We only had a light breakfast and a lunch at the hotel, which were good, so can't comment on the dinner, although we had the best pasta at the Italian Village restaurant out the front on the main road. My only regret is we didn't stay here for the whole of our trip and given Kuta a miss altogether. It was 30 years since we'd been to Bali and if we ever go again would definitely stay at The Griya.

We just love Senur and the Griya Santrian. Senur is great for anyone who wants to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kuta etc. Griya Santrian is located on the beach, which is groomed each morning, and although not the best for swimming, does provide a ideal spot to sit and watch the waves role in. The garden is very tropical, and the buildings authentic looking Rooms are a little dated, but this adds to the Bali feel. Staff are very friendly and provide "service with a smile". A choice of two pools, one near the beach (which is the busier of the two), the other in the garden.

On the main road outside the hotel there are numberous restuarants. Mona Lisa, just across the road, has great food, at inexpensive prices, and is highly recommended.

We stayed at this hotel on a return visit to Bali after 25 years. On our first visit we had stayed at the Bali Beach, which now has been rebuilt after burning down, and we were very glad we did as when we walked up to the Bali Beach it looked very run down and tatty.

We arrived after dark and so could not see much of the grounds etc but we were told we had one of the best rooms. I think this was the case as we were in the small block that was closest to the beach. Very big, extremely clean room with a very modern clouded glass walled shower room. We had booked this hotel as part of a package and it was advertised as medium class. We feel that it was very much more than this. The staff were pleasant, helpful and friendly, the food was excellent when we ate in the restaurants, the buffet breakfast was superb with loads of choice. The two swimming pools (there were only two when we were here) were lovely and we enjoyed just sitting on our terrace watching the world go by. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful with lots of nooks and crannies, Balinese statuary and water features dotted about.

Yes, I would agree that Sanur Beach is not up to much but as we are not beach orientated that did not really bother us. The only thing that did worry me was the loose dogs that were about and came into the hotel grounds. However, as this was the only thing I had to complain about it can't be bad!

If we ever came back to Bali we would certainly stay here again.

While keeping to its roots and now in its fourth decade running, Griya Santrian continues to improve its facilities and services. The most recent addition includes a new wing room which was unveiled only last year, and repeat guests will also be surprised to see a new spa adjacent the resort's lobby, set to be completed this year.
