Anyone else with masochistic tendencies that thinks bringing their young children on a holiday could be a good idea, look no further than the griya santrian. Nice calm beach, shallow pool alongside the regular pool which meets the swim-up bar, super friendly staff, great menu... the list goes on.

We stayed at Griya Santrian Dec 30 - Jan 7 2014. This is a very good beach resort that is well located on Sanur beach. They have a great pool bar and the staff are fantastic.

The hottest place in the hotel is at the reception. This is where one arrives and checks in. They go to much effort to explain everything in great detail. However, after a long journey from the other side of Bali, checking in went on too long (more than 30 min). At first they wanted me to prepay the entire cost of my eight day stay. After my protests, they agreed to just block my credit card for the amount. I was told that prepayment is standard policy ... this was new to me in Bali.

The compulsory New Year's banquet-fee was far too high - more than US$400 per couple. Following my protests, the resort did make efforts in the right direction and that was appreciated. However, on the day there was much waste. There was far too much food, the entertainment during the meal was overkill and nearly nobody danced at the disco. Finally, after two days of preparation, the sound system was over-amplified.

Nevertheless, our stay at Griya Santrian was very enjoyable and we would probably return there for a period that does not include New Years eve.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are quiet but further from the beach and the restaurant. Beach rooms are noisier but closer.

We have just returned from an 8 day stay at the Griya Santrian, and again we had a fabulous time. We took my 84 year old mother and she just loves it there. The New Year's Eve dinner was superb, with great food and entertainment.

Despite renovations taking place near our rooms we had no complaints, especially as we were offered a free meal as compensation. It was a pity that the second pool was not functional, as that too was under going renovations but it looked as if it was almost complete.

The improved WIFI, giving access from the rooms, as well as the lobby, was good, although we found that on an especially wet day it was hard to get in. We assumed this was because everyone were in there rooms accessing the internet as the next day it was generally okay.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms were always spotless. The staff were especially good to my mother, bringing her extra tea bags when she asked, and just generally looking after her.

We will be back again.

Room Tip: The Garden rooms as great value and very similar to the deluxe rooms. The only drawback is they are further from the beach, restaurant and main pool, but they have their own smaller, private pool. This is not be a problem if you are reasonable fit. Rooms near the front/beach are closer to everything but less private, which is fine if you like to watch the action from your veranda. Those deluxe rooms close to the Garden wing seem to have the best of it all, not too far to the beach and restaurant and yet fairly private. When the second pool reopens (which should be any day) these rooms would be my choice.

We arrived at night sometime around 7 pm for check-in. While waiting for the keys to be given, we were provided a cold towel, which comes in handy after a long long trip (especially with all that sweat and grime). Ice cold refreshments were also served. My 4 year old niece really liked the dry compressed towels which turn into cold towels once soaked in water.

We stayed her for half the week, on some days we had breakfast along the beach... some days we had buffet breakfast and the hotel which was around USD6 per person but you got to be early for freshly served food. They also cater food as room service.

One thing I am quite dissatisfied with is that the villa does not provide ample drying area for our beach wears -- we had to settle with the normal clothesline across the bath tub in our bathroom with which we shower with and the things that we hung never dried from this. The bathroom needs some renovation. Other thing, the room even with the curtains pulled in in daytime did not provide ample lighting so I felt stuffy.

Private pools were provided and shared with a few numbers of rooms. It was nice and relaxing but surprisingly cold (but still great nonetheless)! Bicycle rentals were also provided -- my boyfriend and I rented it for a day for a reasonable price but we were afraid that the chains of the bicycle might fall off as they're rattling and old.

If you're staying in this hotel, at this location, bring your sports gear as running at sunrise is great here!

Room Tip: Choose rooms on ground floor
