“An excellent choice”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

I booked this hotel after a recommendation in the Rough Guide to Bali and Lombok - and after checking it out on Trip Advisor, of course! Our family group of 7 - 2 grandparents, 2 parents, and 3 grown up grandchildren - had been in Alam Indah hotel in Ubud for the previous 6 nights, so we were looking for a contrasting stay in Sanur. This hotel certainly delivered that, and the oohs and aahs as we were taken through to our 3 garden rooms facing the third, smallest, pool were a very good start. Then the location of the hotel right on a lovely beach in the dead centre of the 5 km promenade completed the picture.

The hotel has 2 restaurants, both right on the beach frontage. We ate breakfast and a couple of lunches in the main restaurant, and a couple of lunches in the Japanese/Italian one. The food was OK rather than special, but there were decent choices for the 3 vegetarians in our party. The pizzas were excellent, and I can particularly recommend the seafood one. Breakfasts varied on a daily basis, and included western and Indonesian food, which made a nice change from the usual boring buffet style.

The staff were lovely, the rooms were well cleaned, and it was always possible to find a sun bed at any of the pools or on the beach, without any of the early morning towels on the sun bed business. The only downsides were rather small bathrooms in our rooms, and a stony, seaweedy sea, so beach shoes are recommended. However, I did not see any sea urchins.

For those who don't mind rising early, the hotel organises a guided bike ride twice a week, starting at 7 am. There is a charge - $15 US per person, I think - but it is well worth that to have a tour of a Balinese family compound. In fact, the compound visited was that of the founder of this Santrian hotel group - quite amazing to see. We also visited the local food market and the museum (quite interesting, especially the building itself), but missed out the botanical garden visit, as we wanted to get back for breakfast.

My sister and I stayed for a night after spending 2 weeks in Kintamani for a meditation retreat. I must say that the overall stay was perfect. We booked for a suite and enjoyed every second of it. The bed was so comfortable that i woke up feeling so joyful and fresh. Balcony was facing the pool and beach, when we arrived there was a band playing really nice songs til 10pm. We rented 2 bikes from the hotel (for free!) for morning cycling along sanur beach, despite the poor maintained condition, we had lovely time. My sister had to walk and push the bicycle on the way back as its wheel was stuck which i had no idea why. Hahaha! All staffs were super friendly and attentive. Met some indonesian celebrities with their families and they looked super relaxed. This hotel is one of the hotels that are not pretentious and really welcoming. Love the lush garden, artworks and beautiful water fountains.

We would recommend the Griya Santrian, especially if you can afford the renovated delux rooms. The garden rooms at the back of the property looked less modern but still OK. The hotel is well kept, clean and attractive. The staff as is usual in Bali, are great. Breakfasts are average, so don't worry about booking without this inclusion. There are many cafes on the road outside and along the beach serving breakfasts, lunch and dinner, much cheaper than the hotel. Three pools to choose from as well as beach loungers. As others have commented, people do tend to get up early and hog the seats. The only way round this is for pool attendents to remove towels after an hour of non- use, as some good establishments do. However the Griya would have to change its policy of signing towels in and out first, and that is well policed!

Probably this is a better positioned hotel than its sister hotel.

Booked for 4 nights & wish I stayed longer! (in Seminyak for 8 nights prior) what a beautiful place! first impression, Wow! Staff at reception & near the entrance were so warm and friendly, the grounds of the hotel are very well kept, pool areas are lovely & room was very nice. Breakfast was delicious and had variety. Room was cleaned daily with free water given and the food in the restaurant is of good quality and reasonably priced. Location; hotel is right on the beach and only 5mins walk to the Main Street. Perfect hotel for couples and/or families

Our family of 3 adults and 2 children (4 & 2) stayed in 3 deluxe garden rooms. These had been recently upgraded and were very comfortable.
Our rooms faced the tropical pool. Our only complaints would be lack of available pool lounges for the amount of guests and having to swap a card for towels. A complete waste of time. Also at 6.30am every morning a gardener would wheel a bin past our rooms loudly messing up any chance of a sleep in.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms.

First impression was that we were given one of the oldest rooms that was in need of a make over sooner rather than later.Bathroom was very small, had to be careful opening door, could hit your leg on the toilet.Grouting on the tiles was very dirty in places, chipped soap dish and I don't think behind the door ever had a good clean.Daily cleaning wasn't that great either,I could see where they had given the sink top a quick wipe but had left water marks and dust.Hotel is in a good spot, handy to everything.Breakfast was very good, with great variety.I would go and stay here again but I would want a better room.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a recently renovated room.

The Balinese architecture and the staff og Griya Santrian are without a shadow of a doubt the stars of this Hotel. Many cute restaurants right outside, shopping galore and good drivers with clean air conditioned cars ready to whisk you away for the day for an agreed fee.
If I were to suggest changes it would be to the breakfast room - which need to be more open and lighter. The coffee is of the highest quality - just need to be served out of a coffee pot and not cup by cup.

Sanur is well known as a spot for luxurious seaside accommodation with its white sand beach bordering a reef-sheltered lagoon, making it one of the safest on the island, and thus perfect for families. As a luxuriant oasis in Sanur, Griya Santrian's enduring warm Balinese touches are imbued throughout its range of impeccable services and facilities. Leafy tropical Balinese gardens comprising flowering undergrowth and large shady trees (some older than the resort itself) dominate its manicured landscaping. And guests enjoy ease of access to the local shopping and dining hubs of Sanur, all within walking distance from the resort. At the heart of the Balinese owned and operated resort are its wonderful accommodation features - well designed and appointed guestrooms are spread throughout its two main wings. The two story Garden Wing comprises a total of 37 rooms with private balconies or terraces overlooking the resort's aforementioned lush gardens. Meanwhile, the ever popular Beach Wing features a total of 20 spacious rooms that let guests wake up to the wonderful garden view and the dramatic Sanur sunrises. Balconies or terraces also overlook the resort's main pool. Cable TV, mini-bar, hot and cold water, IDD telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe and air conditioning all come as standard in-room amenities, to name a few. Alternatively, a choice of 59 Deluxe Rooms welcome guests to garden and pool views with some closer to the beach and feature en suite marble bathrooms and separate showers. For those who prefer a more lavish accommodation will find the Santrian Suite, a capacious suite with a 68 sqm bedroom with an elegantly draped four-poster bed as its center piece, together with a dressing room and private balcony. Designed with a refined modern Balinese approach, the suite serves as the ultimate romantic getaway for couples and honeymooners, while also great for families. For dining pleasures, Griya Santrian presents its main restaurants and outlets, which includes The Wantilan Restaurant, offering sumptuous breakfasts and all-day dining complemented by sweeping ocean views over the Sanur coastline. Meanwhile, Griya Beach Corner serves a wide choice of Italian, Japanese and Asian specialty dishes in a refreshing open-air setting. For a bit of romance, lovebirds can optionally spice things up with a bespoke candlelit dinner. The Spa at Griya Santrian is a thoughtfully designed and purpose built facility that offers a wide range of health and beauty treatments using natural fruit and flower extracts that will totally indulge you from top to toe. It's the go-to place within the resort grounds where guests can discover a great way to re-energize, refresh and rejuvenate during their stay. Griya Santrian opened in 1972 as a luxury boutique resort with a pride and commitment towards the preservation of Balinese arts and culture. While keeping to its roots and now in its fourth decade running, Griya Santrian continues to improve its facilities and services. The most recent addition includes a new wing room which was unveiled only last year, and repeat guests will also be surprised to see a new spa adjacent the resort's lobby, set to be completed this year. Several key facelifts are also well underway in 2016. ... more   less
