“Great deal for Sanur! Modern looking. Little cramped”
Reviewed 5 March 2013

A Balinese friend told me about the soft opening prices of the hotel. My suite was 400,000/night instead of 520,000. I usually stay at Prima Cottages in Sanur for the same price and Prima is highly rated on trip advisor and it's a reliable standby that's showing it's age e.g. ventilation screens have holes near ceiling that let in mosquitos but it's decent and clean with a friendly experienced staff.

Semarandana is pretty close to the beach and it looks like a Venice Beach modern hotel. The room was clean and modern looking. Didn't realize the towels were in a drawer under the sink until inquiring at the front desk for a towel after drying myself off with the bath mat.

The only window was the one at the front of the room that looks out over the pool about 1 metre from the room's front door. If you're lucky enough not to have any partying Russians or Bulgarians it's probably for the best though it was quieter after the police came to make them get quieter. Basically if you want privacy close the curtain and enjoy the dark room. We could hear guests shuffling furniture until 1 am in the room above but that's not the hotel's fault.

The hotel is brand new, the staff is young and probably friends of the Balinese owner who is an architect. I like supporting locally owned hotels more than big chains. There are more run down guest houses nearby that charge the same price as this place. The architect made an efficient use of a very small lot, not a problem if you don't mind seeing everyone come and go. We had a hilarious British couple next to us, e.g. sitting 1 metre away from our front door on their front area by the pool and that was fun because we were in the mood to socialize. The pool is small but clean.

I stayed here with friends in Feb. just after the "soft opening", for a price that we thought was a great value (USD $38 for a deluxe room). The staff were really kind, hospitable and well-intentioned, although their English was not perfect. There were a few miscommunications but once past these, they were more than accommodating. An example, our flights were at 6am on the last morning of our stay which was too early for breakfast so they gave us the complimentary breakfast and coffee the afternoon before, which we happily ate as an afternoon snack. They kept our extra luggage while we traveled to Lombok and served us complimentary drinks upon our return. Overall we had a great experience there an would love to return in the future. Highly recommend Semarandana!

Semarandana is a small, newbuilt (2012) guest house in Sanur center. It had a soft opening in Jan. 2013 and I think the ’Soft opening’ prices will remain until March – April 2013, while the rooms little by little get fully equipped and the staff more and more experienced. What is remarkable with this guest house is the hight quality of the interiors and the spacy rooms. It seems that the owner/builder has used his experience from beeing a building contractor: the better quality the less maintenance costs.

I stayed in a Studio flat of c:a 35 sqm, which had a lounge suite with sofa bed, kitchenette and dining table, and it felt really luxurious. A/C (not often used) and fan (on all the time) was there, of course, and a pool with a small relaxation area around. Maybe that is the only drawback: the relaxation are can feel a bit small.

I heard another guest call it ”5 star guest house”, considering all the amenities. I agree with that, and I could also put it ”Luxury to budget price”. So I think this guest house has a great future.
