The Bumi Ayu is a good hotel and good value but keep in mind what you are looking for in Sanur. If you are looking for beach access, I would recommend paying more to stay at a beach side property. It was difficult to get to the beach from the Bumi Ayu. It was about a 15 minute walk and the beaches catered to those staying at the beachside hotel. The hotel said it had a shuttle to the beach, but we never took it. The sign at the front said it left every two hours, if at all, and only one way. If you are looking for a hotel on the main shopping and dining route, this was a good location. Down an alley a few hundred yards from Tamblingan, the hotel was removed from the traffic noise and should have been quiet for sleeping except for barking dogs and a loud radio that played at all hours from some neighboring property.

As for other features, the breakfast was fine but not memorable. A continental breakfast was free and for a few additional rupiah you could add eggs or meat. The pool was sufficient but the pool bar was usually unattended and pool towels were hard to come by.

The room was spacious enough but spartan and a bit dark. The one air conditioner never seemed to quite cool the room. The bathroom had very poor ventilation and a faulty toilet.

We ended up staying for a late check out for which we were charged a half day rate which was reasonable. We were also able to rent a dvd player which was nice for my kids as we waited for a late flight. There is wireless by the pool and not in the rooms.

For US$70 a night this was a solid value for a family of four, but next time I would stay on the beach.

We stayed a week at Bumi Ayu with our 6 month old baby and enjoyed ourselves. Lovely garden setting with turtles and fish in a pond, frangipani trees and orchids all around. Pool was good, with three areas including a knee-deep kiddy pool where we swam with baby.

We found the food surprisingly good and cheap for those on a budget. This was important to us as we ate room service whenever baby fell asleep. The continental breakfast included was very generous and you could swap the toast for fried rice, french toast or the like, and it came with a large fruit platter so we actually couldn't have eaten more if we tried.

Staff could have been a tad friendlier but they warmed to us when we made an effort to engage them, and they were very accommodating when we asked for special requests for the baby (eg. breakfast delivered to the room if raining).

We were in one of the older rooms downstairs, near the pool. The bathroom had been recently renovated and looked very nice. The room was nice and clean and we're fussy, because of the baby! A little dark due to dark tiles on the floor, but that suited us because it helped bub get to sleep in the daytime.

We did have trouble with the airconditioning on a couple of occasions - my Indonesian husband thinks they might switch them down low to save money. They were a bit slow to fix it but it came good in the end.

This was a great place for us given we often spent the whole day at the hotel. They just need to improve the service somewhat. A good budget find.

We found this hotel to be nicely situated close to shops & beach, & the rooms were clean & comfortable although a little dark. We had 1 night in the luxury room - highly recommend & then moved to our original booking of a standard room which was going to be a row behind, but requested a poolside one & was given it. Resteraunt staff were very friendly & obliging, maybe if one treats them nice they treat you nice ? Have noticed some tourists can be very short/rude therefore would be very hard for people to be nice back ! Lovely pool ... suit all ages & well maintained. Also cold water spa which was lovely. The standard rooms are lacking back up power :-( & when the power goes out it is pitch black .. we had 4 night time power blackouts whilst there but resteraunt staff lent us a torch for one of the blackouts. I think there is room for improvement in the reception area as far as friendliness/helpfullness goes. Lots of nice eateries close by, especially down on the beach front. Very relaxing.
My only complaint for this hotel would be EVERY afternoon the Balinese family would come & swim/jump/dive in the pool & could tell that other people were not impressed with this. People that used to stay there & now live in Bali return there for the majority of the day & bring their Balinese friends with them. Also the hotel has its own massage & believe that its a bit cheeky that they do poolside massages taking business away from the hotel. This would be the only reason I would not return to this hotel as it really is quite annoying !

This was our 3rd trip to Bali, stayed for 2 weeks and found Bumi Ayu Bungalows to be the best we have stayed at so far. Very nice clean rooms, beautiful gardens. Quiet, out of the way but only 5 min walk from the beach. Would have to agree with some other reviews, the only disappointment was restaurant staff sometimes werent as friendly as you would find elsewhere, although this was not something that spoilt our stay.
