After a long day, my friends and I were enticed to visit Batik for some local fare. The place is very pretty- the tiled floors are remarkable and the restaurant had a "shophouse" feel. We sat on the balcony and enjoyed the street view. The first thing that was apparent was that the waitress did not understand us. This can happen so we patiently got the food ordered and enjoyed the atmosphere. Our drinks arrived and I am pretty convinced that the red wine sangria we ordered had no red wine in it- was more of a fruit juice! We took this with good humour though and looked forward to our dinner.
Sadly, the food that arrived was substantially below par. The vegetable mee goreng was full of meat and had to be sent back and the satay was made of unidentifiable meat in a questionable sauce. My main didn't even arrive despite us asking for it again (and there being no other diners in the restaurant!) and the new vegetarian mee goreng was made from packet noodles, barely separated from their boiling.
We decided to leave and not finish our meals as they were, for the most part, inedible (or in my case, did not exist!) We waited patiently as the waitress tried to total our bill and she seemed to be struggling with everything. We felt sorry for the restaurant and the nice people running it. Such a nice setting and the chef who came out at the end was all smiles. Maybe they were having an off night but it was definitely the worst food we encountered in Bali.
