“Good value family hotel with a great waterslide, but showing its age”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

7 of us (4 adults & 3 kids aged 3, 5 & 11) stayed in a 3 bedroom loft suite for 4 nights in mid-September 2013.

OVERALL
Overall, we found the hotel was good value for money, but it is showing its age and would benefit from some renovations. The favourite part for the kids was definitely the waterslide - they would have been happy playing on it the whole time. The "kids club" was not a place where you could leave the kids as it is NOT supervised and kids can come and go as they please. It was undergoing some maintenance when we were there and I hope it ends up being a more enjoyable place for kids to spend time SUPERVISED while the adults enjoy some adult time.

STAFF
On arrival, the desk staff were very friendly and helpful and provided a lovely refreshing cool tea (which the kids also enjoyed) and cool face towels. The staff throughout the hotel always looked us in the eyes and said hello which was lovely. But the service was a little slack at times.

ROOMS
Entry to our room was on the front side of the hotel which is the busy main road which I was a little worried about, but we heard little to no noise. The balcony overlooked the inside of the hotel - the pool area, which was a lovely view. On the balcony was a small clothes airer which we utilised our entire stay, but which was a little small for 7 of us.

The loft suite was extremely spacious, with 2 bedrooms downstairs and 2 adjoining bathrooms, then a 3rd bedroom & bathroom upstairs. I couldn't quite figure out though why there was no furnishings in the room at the top of the stairs. The top floor was quite warm; and there was a problem with the airconditioner up there, but this was rectified very quickly.

The shower prayed onto the toilets, one of the bath plugs & one of the sink plugs kept getting stuck down so we had to have a kitchen knife handy to pry them back up. But the bathrooms were maintained really well each day. In fact, the whole apartment was serviced to a high standard - they even lined up our numerous pairs of shoes. The kids loved the swans, monkeys & elephants made from the towels and left on the beds.

The lounge area was spacious, but the lounge was terribly uncomfortable and the pieces kept moving apart which made it awkward to sit on. Great options with tv viewing, but flat batteries in the controllers, which took over 24 hours to have returned to us.

The kitchen was quite tired, but was functional and with a great sized fridge to stock up on supplies at the local Hardy's supermarket (accessed via the back gate) to keep the costs down.

The room keys, while inconspicous being a credit card style, were easily lost (which did occur by one of our kids). I suggest management consider attaching a lanyard to them or something.

POOLS
As previously mentioned, the waterslide and kids pool area was very much enjoyed by the kids. The waterslide was quite slow, however, and could be a bit quicker (kept getting stuck in a few spots and had to move yourself down to get back into the stream of water). There was usually a staff member by the kids pool, but they weren't overly concerned with what was going on and I certainly would not have felt safe leaving the kids unsupervised as I doubt it would have been noticed if one of them got into trouble. While there was soccer and basketball nets, there were no balls to be seen.

The main pool was well laid out and very clean. The kids also enjoyed playing in here. However, there was very little supervision (if any). And at night (it got darker earlier than we expected) there was very little lighting in or around the pool, which we felt was unsafe trying to keep track of the kids. The basketball net was fun for the kids, but you had to have your own ball it seemed (we bought a cheap blow up one from Hardy's supermarket).

FOOD
We had breakfast included with our package. There was adequate choice of drinks and food which we found was all nice and appeared fresh. As with most buffets, the bain-maries didn't keep the food overly hot. The pool food was reasonably prices, tasted quite good, but were smallish portion sizes.

MASSAGE
My in-law's enjoyed a free 1/2 hour massage each that was included as part of our package. They said that it was excellent.

BACK GATE
The back gate was extremly handy to get to the main shopping and eating parts of Sanur. Hardy's supermarket was great and had food, drinks ($2.10 for a 700ml bottle of Bintang!), plus clothes, toys etc. However, after utilising the free shuttle to Sanur beach one day, then deciding to eat out for dinner (at an italian restaurant called Massimo which was lovely), we got caught out with the back gate being locked and we had an extremely long walk back to the hotel dodging holes in the footpaths etc. I strongly urge the hotel to consider keeping the back gate open for much longer.

OTHER
A few of the days that we were there, there were 2 girls who set up by the main pool and did hair braiding and I think also nails. My daughter got her hair braided for only 150,000RUP ($15AUD), which I found out after is quite cheap. And when one came out a few days later, they re-did it at no cost.
There were NO mosquitoes at all the entire 4 days we were there. It wasn't until we moved to our 2nd accommodation (a villa in Seminyak) where we were eaten alive, that we appreciated the fact that there were no mozzies at the Paradise Suites. We assumed this was as a result of the smoke that we saw early in the mornings.

Will we go back? We're not ones to stay at the same place twice anyway, but due to the kids club not being a fully operational or supervised place that we could leave the kids and go off for the day, I don't think we would go back on that basis.

This was our second time visiting this hotel and because we had loved it so much last time we booked again.
Once again we loved this place and would most definitely return.
Pros:
Super Family Friendly
Spacious 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Apartment
Easy transport - even using the hotel transport it was still only $9AUD to Waterbom and $3 to the main drag in Sanur
Free Wifi
Staff as always outstanding.
Love the new inclusion of Poolside bar and DJ for Happy Hour but as a result you lose some pool chairs ... this makes it a bit harder to grab one.
Free Shuttle bus to Hardys and Beach
Back gate which means a quick walk to Hardys.
Cons:
And yes this is really nitpicking because ultimately we love this place.
Would be great to have a shower not in the bath.. both bathrooms have a bath which is great but my tribe are all very tall and this makes it pretty hard to shower at times.
Toilet ran continuously and my husband had to rig it to stop all the time.
We were interrupted during our massage with people coming into book. Might be good if they locked the door or had a "Do not disturb - treatment in progress" sign.
As a said small things and more suggestions really.

We booked in this hotel simply because of the kids club. Quite disappointed with the indoor kids club. It looks really tired and badly maintained. However the outdoors and the kids pool are quite good. It would be a superb hotel for family if the hotel would done up the indoor kids club.

Overall the hotel is great value for money

This is a hard one for me to review. In the past we have stayed in 5 star hotels, so there were a lot of 'little' noticeable differences staying here. The apartment we had was awesome. Very spacious and comfortable for a family of 5. Kids club was unfortunately being renovated so the temporary site was not very good and there wasn't really any mentionable planned activities. The children were taken the pool/water slide in kids club with our permission. However when my friend and I went to go check on them we found our 5 kids between 4-9 in the pool unsupervised, we sat there for 5 minutes before an attendant came back.

The food via room service and the breakfast provided at the hotel, was okay. Nothing special. The food is not chilled or warmed very well at the buffet, a lot of it did not look fresh.

Food plates/rubbish and empty glasses were always lying around the pool chairs and tables etc, service was not up to standard in general, however the staff were very nice.

The water slide was a big, big hit for the kids however and as they were so happy and having so much fun, we did enjoy ourselves relaxing by the pool.

The spa treatment was very good, but the service terrible.

I'm not saying I wouldn't come back, but it wouldn't be in my first few choices.

We spent 8 days in total in Bali, with the last 3 in Sanur to finish off with some rest and relaxation. We stayed in a family apartment at the Sanur Paradise Plaza Suites which was excellent. Although located right on the major bypass road, the hotel is very quiet. The apartment included its own kitchen (if you are that way inclined on a holiday!), 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a living/dining space. There was a complimentary water cooler (with bottled water) which was fantastic (just needed to refill the one bottle rather than buy a new one each time).
The grounds and pools are fabulous and the staff could not do enough for you. The kids loved the pools and there was enough shaded areas around where you could get out of the sun when you wanted. The pools were pretty full in the afternoons, but not enough to be crowded.
The restaurant for the breakfast buffet (which was included in our package) was good and the choice of food very good. Not a large number of tables (given the number of rooms) but they change over pretty fast so people only wait a short time, if at all. The dinner we had there was not so great, but there are plenty of external dining options if needed.
The hotel is a short walk (down the back streets) to the main area of Sanur which is a far nicer area than either of Legian or Ubud - quieter, good range of stalls & shops, good range of eating, easy to get around (actual sidewalks, not just hopping along the side of the road).

We stayed 12 nights in a two bedroom apartment in September/October 2013. We found the property to be good value for money. We recommend this property especially to families as the facilities for children are great. To get the most from the property, families with children aged say 1-10 would especially enjoy the facilities. Our children are teenagers and they especially enjoyed the pool and free WI-FI in the property, even in the restaurants!

Cons:
Rooms are tired, and could do with a fresh coat of paint and maybe updating the furniture. The bathrooms, although clean, were well used. It also took ages for the hot water to come through in every hot tap, although we could work around this. Back gate could be open for longer too, although we also worked around this by using the free shuttle services to the beach/Hardys. There was also a lot of noise coming through from the room above us early in the last two mornings, it sounded like there were elephants running around up there, but this was only for a couple of nights. And probably more to do with the guests upstairs than the hotel.

Pros:
Large apartment, very powerful air conditioning, great balcony with drying rack, everything in the apartment worked and nothing was broken, shuttle services to the beach/Hardy's etc, good breakfast and open for the right amount of time (can be early at 6.30am and can have a sleep in and get breakfast until 10.30am), pool was fabulous and the water very clean and sparkling. Food prices were great value for money, even room service, which is usually expensive in our experience. Check out of 12.00pm was also appreciated, most hotels in Australia make check out 10.00am which is too early. Special thanks to the reception staff, all were very friendly, accommodating, helpful and professional. And of course, free Wi-Fi which was appreciated by every family member! We also appreciated the bonus extras for staying a certain amount of nights, my husband and I enjoyed our massage and as a family we enjoyed the free dinner. We also enjoyed the Bintang! Definitely more pros than cons.

Thanks to all staff for helping to make our holiday enjoyable and as stress free as possible. If coming back for a family holiday, we will return to the Sanur Paradise Plaza Suites.

Michelle,

This is the 4th time we have stayed at this hotel in the past 8 years, and we would thoroughly recommend it to families looking for a good value holiday in Bali.

We have 4 children and have always struggled to find hotels that can accomodate large families. We either have to get 2 or more rooms (which becomes quite expensive) or rent a house or villa - and then miss out on all the facilities that you get in a hotel. The Paradise Plaza Suites provides the best of both worlds.

The hotel is located a few blocks back from the beach. You can walk to the main shopping/restaurant area of Sanur in about 5 minutes, and to the beach in about 10-15 minutes. The hotel has an area assigned at the beach with deck chairs and towels. There is a shuttle bus that runs between the hotel and the beach throughout the day.

On our last visit 3 years ago we felt the hotel was in need of some modernisation. We were pleased to see on this visit that they have commenced renovations. Since our last visit they have refurbished the lobby/reception area, the restaurant which now includes a poolside bar, and were in the process of renovating the kids club. They have also started renovating the rooms - we stayed in a recently renovated 3 bedroom apartment with loft. The kitchen was new and the bathrooms have been retiled. This apartment is extremely spacious. There are 3 very generous bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. The master bedroom upstairs is very large and having it seperate from the children's rooms is great. There is a large lounge area and a self contained kitchen and dining area.

There is a large main pool as well as a children's pool at the back of the hotel that has a water slide. The water slide is a real hit with children up to the age of about 10. There is a kids club that has air hockey, table tennis, billiard table + video games and other activities for younger children.

The food in the hotel is reasonably priced, which means that you can order room service or poolside service for the whole family without worrying about breaking the bank. As an example, club sandwiches, burgers, fish & chips, pizza and pasta are all about US$7.00 per dish. Larger meals such as steaks etc are US$9.00 - $15.00 per dish. Soft drinks are about US$2 each, beers about US$4 each and cocktails are about US$7.00 - $10.00 each.

The Paradise Plaza Hotel (owned by the same company) is located about 3km away. It is more appropriate for couples without children, but if you stay at the Plaza Suites you can use the facilities at the Hotel as well. There is a shuttle bus that runs between the two hotels. Every few days we would have breakfast at the other hotel for a change of scenery and then use the pool there, which is really nice, but very different to the Plaza Suites. The gym at the Plaza Suites is a little basic, but apparently the one at the Hotel is very good (although I did not use it).

One of the great things about the hotel is the staff. They are extremely friendly and helpful - nothing is too much trouble. We hadn't visited the hotel for 3 years, but still many of the staff remembered us and the children.

I would rate this as a 4-star hotel. While it does not have the glitz of a 5-star hotel, it is great value for money, very relaxing and the kids will love it.

All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel for families.

Room Tip: Request a room that has been renovated. As of September 2013 not all of the rooms have been renovat...

Thank you for your positive review on the TripAdvisor website. Your testimonial says is all. Yes we have recently renovated a number of areas at the Suites in the past few years and we do appreciate you highlighting this. The kids club and waterslide is a huge hit and by the end of the day the kids sleep very well. We also appreciate the comments with regards to the staffing.. The staff are our biggest asset and yes nothing is too much trouble. Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you back on your 5th visit.
