“Wanted to love it, but didn't.”

I live in Ubud and have wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time. The grounds are lovely and the buildings are charming. Our room had great bones - a fun stone bathroom, nice spaces and pretty light. But it felt like a prison cell - white walls and a white bedcover. No art or anything to give it personality. We had a beautiful private garden and great outdoor sitting area, but when we opened the door to the room, my sisters and I were all silent. We had booked the room to celebrate a birthday and it was... well, weird. The check-in was weird..the front desk told us that our room wasn't ready because the guests had not checked out b/c someone in their party was sick. Didn't really want to hear that. The restaurant was weird..the host asked us to sit in the main dining room and not by the beach b/c then he wouldn't have to walk so far. And the food was weird. I ordered red snapper and it was a plate of white fish on top of white potatoes on a white plate. At first I thought it was pasta in cream sauce. You literally could not see it. The fish was so overcooked I literally had to chew it like gum.
I also felt like the price of the room was outrageous for what you got. They quoted me $150, but by the time they converted into "their" conversion rate for the rupiah it was around $175. Totally not worth it. The owners should go to Damai in Lovina for $185 and see what that gets you - now THAT is worth it!

We really enjoyed our stay at La Taverna. The rooms are basic but have what you need.
The hotel has a perfect location right by the nice beach. They clean your room in the morning and change towels and linnen every day. Every afternon/evening they empty your waste basket and check the toilet again. We had a big veranda with a table plus chairs and a divan/sofa. There is lots af good restaurants nearby along the beach and if you want it even cheaper go to the mainroad. The staff was always in a good mood and willing to do their best for you. If you want big hotel luxury style you should choose something else but if you want small nice and friendly you should choose La Taverna. The food in their restaurant is very good. We had pizza and gorgonzola sallad several times.

This hotel has its best days behind it. it is in a good location between the main street and the beach. The gardens are well maintained and the staff are efficient and reasonably friendly. The rooms have very small doors externally and internally, if you are over five foot five you will have a headache! The bathroom is small and has no windows or air vents. The food is expensive but the inclusive breakfast is ok with a wide choice of food. The towels provided in the rooms are very thin , are they the original ones from when the hotel was first opened, take your own to get dry!

I spent on and off a month in La Taverna. What I liked the best is that being there felt like being home. Quiet, cozy and with the most comforting and delicious food. I liked its simplicity, and I liked the fact that there were no TV's in the rooms. Going to holiday means switching off, and if you wish to know the news on holiday, the best way is to read the papers on the comfortable beds in the lounges caressed by the sea breeze, sipping a mixed juice. What more do you want from life? I also thought the service was great, and the owners very nice, young and good looking, bringing an especially pleasant energy to the place. I highly recomment it, for it is like a little oasis of peace and simple comfort in Sanur.

We stayed in La taverna for a week after spending a few days in Uluwatu. I have visited and also stayed in this hotel before over the years and was always drawn back by its rustic charm - here are the Pro's and Cons:
It has one of the best locations in Sanur beach - very handy to everything.
Has a lovely tropical entrance set back from busy road, There is an upgraded dining area open to the beach and a gorgeous pool. (no kids pool). No swim up bar. Limited to 10 lounge chairs around pool. Lots of lounges/umbrellas on beach..
Be sure when you book you dont end up in the old standard rooms near the restaurant - which they now call superior. (Room 1,2,3). These are not yet updated and can also feature a tom & jerry showdown in the ceiling each morning. (is that a pro or con?) reported this to management and hopefully exterminated by now. The deluxe rooms are recommended they are lovely..most of the superiors are renovated. The daily breakfasts are sufficient - fresh fruit, juices, american breakfasts & criossants.. they have a good lunch menu try the wood fire pizzas! Overall the price range is more expensive than most dining in the area but you are paying for a rustic boutique hotel which attracts mostly older European $$ clientele. Would not recommend this hotel to families. There are many other hotels on the Sanur strip which cater well to kids.

We left Kuta and decided to stay in Sanur for a few nights. My partner booked a room at this hotel as the grounds at the front and entrance to the hotel look amazing. We were taken to our room and were very dissapointed. The room door was wooden and did not close properly leaving a gap for the mosquito's to attack at night, it was locked with a padlock through a metal ring. The shower was set into a spa bath that was sunken into the floor so you needed to climb down into it to have a shower. The shower head broke off the wall and the entrance to the bathroom required you to duck through as it was that low. There was no TV in the room either. Very expensive for what you get, worse than a budget hotel. We checked out and went and stayed just down the road at the Taman Agung which was fantastic and at only $50AUD per night was good for the budget as well.
