“This is the setting you should have while in Bali”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2011

My husband and I spent 5 days at Villa Semana in May, our first trip to Bali. Prior to checking in at Villa Semana we stayed at another hotel villa of similar size located in Seminyak. I cannot begin to tell you how unhappy I was with the Seminyak area, even though our villa was quite nice. Still trying to figure out why so many want to stay there. The beaches are not great, the traffic is horrible, and you really feel know you are in a third world country. Not my idea of a dream vacation, nor was it the image I had in my mind of Bali. Our vacation was for almost 3 weeks and I felt like I had made a horrible decision to spend this much time in Bali.

However the minute our driver pulled into the beautiful Villa Semana property my heart lifted. The setting is stunning, right on the Ayung river. Our villa had a view of the rice paddies, the river and gardens. It was lovely. The staff is absolutely exceptional in every way, from the adorable young man who checked us into our room, to the efficient, always smiling dining room staff ("Ani" is so sweet and Sukarma is a character), to the drivers. All are better than any staff at the Four Seasons, Aman resorts or anywhere else. The owner seems to be a tough guy to work for as he demands perfection, but it does pay off. The hotel and grounds are absolutely pristine. The food in the dining room is outstanding and it's as good as any we had in Ubud. (Especially the Thai selections). Breakfast is amazing, you can order almost anything. The shuttle to Ubud runs quite often and it's only a 15 minute trip. Loved staying outside of town for the peace, quite, and the natural beauty. (The hotel is in the Sayan area outside Ubud). We had spa treatments every other day. Don't miss the spa! The ladies there are also very well trained and you will not experience a more delightful setting. The massage beds are just above the river. There is a waterfall you can see and hear from the massage area , and sometimes you see Balinese washing and swimming in the river from the spa. We also saw this daily life on the river from our room-just fascinating.

This is the real Bali in our opinion. Vila Semana will not disappoint unless you want non-stop nightlife, crowds, and noise. It is also a great value.

As this was my first visit to Bali, I wanted to stay somewhere different from the multi rooms hotels that we were so used to. We were pleasantly surprised with Villa Semana. From the moment we meet the driver at the airport, we know the hotel has set a certain high standard. We were given cold towels and drinks in the car which was refreshing after the flight to Bali. Janawan the driver is a careful driver who gave us a smooth ride to the hotel. The hotel grounds is nicely landscaped and we had a good view of the Padi fields and the rushing Agung river. We has Balinese massage at the spa which was so relaxing. Service was ver good too. The staff at the restaurant were always so welcoming and they speak good English. Food served was delicious too. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to relax in a natural Balinese ubud, this place is it ! Free shuttle service is also provided to go to ubud town. The hotel owner, Jurg also offered us good advice on places to sightsee or eat in Bali. This is one hotel you will love to stay and will not disappoint. Wished we had stayed longer. Will come back again. Our trip to Bali was made memorable mainly due to our stay in villa Semana.

It is an ideal example of hospitality... Service was beyond the expectations. No doubt property was not very very big but the location of villas, pool, restaurant; out standing service; joyfull staff and romantic spa left the marks of memories for ever. Staff was very co-operative in all manner and specially as far as veg food. If you get avaibility of Chemapaka Villa don't miss it...

Villa Semana is a picturesque boutique hotel tucked away near the Agung River in Ubud. We had booked the Paddy View Pool Villa and once we got there, we were slightly disappointed by the size of the room for the price that we paid. Another problem was that since the paddy fields were right outside our room, there was hardly any privacy with farmers cultivating the land right next to our pool. There were also repairs taking place in the villa next to ours and was therefore a bit noisy.

The next day we asked the Manager to see if we could change our villa to a quieter, more private one. She immediately upgraded us to the Semana Suite which in one word was spectacular! It had a beautiful (much larger) private pool overlooking the Agung River and the service was truly world class. The Suite had a stunning views of the river from all rooms and the bathroom was large and luxurious.

But what truly made this stay memorable was the overall quality of the Villa Semana service. Nothing was too much for them. The shuttle that took us to Ubud was prompt and very useful. Everybody from the Manager to the drivers in the shuttle were helpful and made our stay completely wonderful. All in all a great stay!

I went with my family - wife and two teenagers. We got a duplex villa that came with a small private swimming pool. Wished we've stayed longer!
1) Fantastic resort environment. Lush greenery and very nice landscape.
2) Food at the restaurant was good. Very good selection of dishes. Staff very flexible with cooking what you want e.g. a lunch item that you want for dinner. Nice restaurant ambience. Waiters/waitresses well-trained in serving guests; attentive and alert to guest's needs.
3) Since this is a boutique hotel with only about ten villas, the resort is quiet and peaceful. I received very attentive service.
4) Free shuttle to Ubud town centre was very convenient. My family was particularly pleased with Janawan, one of the hotel drivers who was very friendly, patient and careful in his driving.
5) The two-storey villa I stayed in was roomy, well- and tastefully furnished. There was a nice private pool (abt 5m x 2m) with two deck chairs and umbrella. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Air con worked well.
6) the outdoor shower (in addition to a bath tub and shower indoor) was fun to use
7) the spa/massage was great. It was next to a river. The sound of flowing waters was soothing.
8) wi-fi internet access available although access speed and signal strength could be improved.

Looking for an exceptionally managed boutique private villa in Ubud, with a focus on natural surroundings? ... then look no further than Villa Semana.

We stayed here for 2 nights in May 2011, we have been to Ubud before & enjoy coming here for a few days every time we go to Bali.. boy are we glad we decided to book this Villa! With only about 8 private villa's (private in the way that you dont hear your neighbours), it's set amongst rice fields & mountains. Immaculate grounds - not a cigarette butt in sight or thing out of place, the property is very large and filled with greenery, karp, running water features & other native flowers, An infinity pool right on the top of a mountain allows you to hear rhythmic sounds of the surrounding nature at its best; birds, wildlife a a running river, you feel like your on the edge of the world - lush green jungle-like surroundings adorn the restaurant/communal area .. We were tired from a week of festivities so decided to spend a day by the very large pool, and it was just what the doctor ordered! The staff were a pleasant surprise too - not intrusive like so many hotels & Villa's, we were left alone to enjoy our time, swim & read books, but as soon as we looked around to find someone to take our lunch order, there someone was! The food offering is great too - with a mix of western & indonesian with an emphasis on organic produce the dishes were aesthetically pleasing & enjoyable (Aparently they have over 10 chefs on the books), we were more than satisfied with the menu, i can highly recommend the Margerita's too - YUM! Breakfast was included in our room & was lovely - the local tea was the best i had tasted in Bali .. when we left we kept asking for it at all our major hotels but were not able to have anything that compared. You MUST try the sunset massage located by the river & goes for 2 hrs, but book in early .. Convenient with a shuttle service that takes you into Ubud central town, wireless that can keep you in the know, and probably the friendliest owner/operator we have ever met. We travel quite a bit, and were so impressed by Jurj - he was only there to help, gave us recommendations on places to see, tours to take & restaurants to try.. he genuinely loved his operation and was there to make you feel comfortable ... if you're trying to decide on a place to stay in Ubud, don't bother looking elsewhere, this one ticks all the boxes!
