“Stunning”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

Extraordinary and well worth a visit... Just be aware, the rooms are quite close together and the natural water pool quite small so the "robinson crusoe" experience requires sharing with your fellow guests. The food is beautifully presented and very high quality but not the best balinese I've enjoyed....

Expensive for what is a "javanese hut" backpacker experience converted into comfort. But fun to try.

Room Tip: Study the website carefully to find the right room for you.

After spending two weeks island hopping all across Indonesia my traveling companion and I had looked forward to a night in Bali. Neither one of us were prepared for what we found at Bambu Indah! I had been to Bali a number of years ago and upon arrival it definitely seemed to have builtup substantially so I was glad to have made the choice to delve into the interior. We passed village after village specializing in stone carving or wood furniture. Bambu indah is about 10 minutes drive (airport side) from Ubud, considered the cultural heart of Bali. The entrance is discrete and tucked away on a side street off the main road and what we found was paradise on earth!

We had arrived early so our room was not yet ready so one of the ladies at the reception gave us a tour of the grounds. They were stunning! As I snapped pictures like crazy other guests were equally effusive saying they too were blown away at the beauty and uniqueness of the property. The organic gardens, the unique, creative structures many made from bamboo, the giant "baskets" that housed the reception and the bathroom. The towering bamboo structures were out of someone's vivid imagination. The grand bamboo staircase led up to the spa and private massage areas, the spacious and intriguing kitchen and restaurant, the black bamboo yoga building of Sumatran traditional architecture, the natural pool spanned the premisess and then you look out and see the terraced rice fields below. The sound of rushing water is all around from the innovative irrigation systems typically used in the rice fields but also from a rushing river or creek down below. When we arrived tiny birds--- palm swifts if I have my birds right--flitted about and the air was perfumed. I don't know what flower but it was fragrant and maybe a touch of incense too?

Our room was the Jawa Lama house. On the far edge of the property. A wrap around porch with comfortable lounging furniture. There was a measure of privacy that some of the ones by poolside mightn't have. The view was more jungle than rice fields here and to the right still was a tree house or meditation room probably 40' between a coconut palm and another tree. Of course we had to climb up and check it out!

After a couple weeks of adventure travel both of us took advantage of the massage services and it was excellent and affordable! Food at lunch and dinner was also delicious. Prices were western for the meals but being from the west, we're used to that. I could easily have stayed for days and gotten into the flow and pace of Bali ---kind of ridiculous to only be in Bali a day but I left vowing to come back to this place. Some of the interactions with other guests (which seemed very friendly and I believe that the place lends itself to this) raved about the morning walk inthe rice fields and bragged about a green school visit as also highly worthwhile, not to mention the fun of going into Ubud for shopping, catching a traditional Balinese dance or music. If you're comfortable enough you can rent one of bambu indahs scooters or take a taxi to town for $6.50 which they just apply to your bill if you wish.

The rooms were comfortable and cool. There is a rustic-ness about them as they are reconstructed Javanese houses. So the floor boards creak as you walk, etc... With outdoor showers and bathrooms. So it's not the Ritz but it's not trying to be either. It's its own thing altogether. I would highly recommend it and would go back in a New York minute!

Room Tip: I like the Jawa Lama house as it was off to the side and afforded more privacy. The poolside rooms a...

We are touched to read about your observations in such wonderful and loving details. Well done for making it up the tree house!

Jawa Lama is indeed a very special house with a classic "Old Java" charm and a rich history. We are glad you enjoyed your stay there. Do let us know when you decide to return and we'll make sure it's available to you.

Terima kasih.

Bambu Indah is a hidden treasure. Stunningly located in a tropical garden overlooking rice fields, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing getaway with your partner or family.

We stayed in Padi house, right in front of the organic pool and with superb view over the garden and valley. The house is spacious and cosy, with antique furniture, a comfortable bed and beautiful batiks on the walls. The open air bathroom is in perfect harmony with surrounding nature.

The restaurant provides a daily-changing menu with few choices, but everything is made out of organic and high-quality products.

The beauty of the houses lays in their unique equilibrium with nature: you will sleep surrounded by the sounds of tropical forest and will enjoy being in touch with their inhabitants.
Avoid Bambu Indah if you are a fan of high-tech modern and aseptic places, as this is not the right place for you.

Room Tip: Padi house is spacious and has a superb view over garden and rice fields.

Enticed by the gorgeous online pictures, we decided on Bambu Indah as our Ubud base. Unfortunately it is nothing like the pictures, it is WAAAAAAYYYYYY better! What the owners have created here is an establishment with loads of soul and charm. This is backed up by impeccable service from a truly outstanding team. Great attention to detail throughout and especially in relation its environment.
Hands down the highlight of our Bali trip (which was great throughout).
You won't want to leave.

An oasis of peace and tranquility! No words or photos can do this place justice and we could not have hoped for a more special adventure. I was impressed how discerning my 8 year old was when he voted Bambu Indah his favorite hotel of our trip (despite stays at 2 other hotels including a luxurious 5* resort in Nusa Dua).

He put the flashlight supplied in the room to good use, tracking frogs, ants, geckos and the shrimps in the shrimp pond beneath his sisters’ room. He played tunes plucking the strings on one of the bamboo structures and met the man behind this “musical architecture”. He jumped from the rope Tarzan style into the “pond” and was just in perfect communion with nature as we all were.

No landscaping here, just permaculture of string beans, aubergines, cherry tomatoes, chilies etc. that will end up on your plate at the restaurant, and flower shrubs whose flowers you will find at the bottom of your bed at the end of the day or by the breakfast table in the morning. Great attention to detail and the esthetic!

We enjoyed the fab food, the early morning river walk, the panoramic views of the rice fields, and the beautiful bamboo and teak structures that make up Bambu Indah. We loved the amazing 4-hand massages in our room (reason alone to move to Bali!), the wonderful Hindu blessing organized for us to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and the warmth and professionalism of every member of the staff!

A truly unique and memorable experience, topped off by a magical week for our kids at the Green School (also the brain child of visionary John Hardy) summer camp.

Room Tip: Afrika House is large and spacious with a great bathroom and breathtaking views of the rice fields.

Bambu Indah was so lovely and memorable, even years later I am still thinking about how much I'd love to return. We arrived late in the evening and were escorted to our house by torchlight. In the morning we awoke to the most beautiful surprise view. The food was fresh, coffee strong, surroundings peaceful, and incredibly pleasant.
