I have to say that our brief trip to Bali was not what we expected. We had great expectations that were quickly deflated by the "non stop" road side shops from the coast to Ubud - desperate to see some nature / scenery / green - but basically no respite.
Central Ubud was much the same, a heaving mass of humanity, lemmings on a "cultural" holiday.

Bali is obviously a victim to it's own success.

Anyway, I digress... Bambu Ubud was a breathe of fresh air . This felt like the Bali I had expected, semi jungle, rice fields, river, mountains, the sounds of the local wildlife untainted by the hoards, cars & countless mopeds.

We stayed in the Afrika room - stunning views, gorgeous room & bathroom. At last this was something that made us feel where we were.

The stafff were excellent & super friendly. One of the best massages ever. We loved our 2 nights here & avoided central Ubud at all costs. Renting a hotel scooter we set off into the unknown asking specifically for where the tourist buses did not go.

Highly recommend it. Keep it up!! Our only comment would be to improve the variety & quality of the food...

Room Tip: We loved the additional privacy of Afrika

We stayed at Bambu Indah on 9 January 2014 for 1 night in the Udang House.

Bambu Indah is a very picturesque eco-luxury boutique hotel/resort with 11 - 15 rustic and yet refined 100-year-old antique Javanese teak wood houses, namely Kuda House, Manis House, Biru House, Kuning House, Udang House, Kolam House, Kuno House, Jawa Lama House, Padi House, Elora & Orin House, The Pagoda, Afrika House, Sumba House, etc. As the houses are all distinctive in design and view, you have got to study the respective descriptions and photos provided on the hotel/resort's official website before you make the reservation. Having said that, I don't think there is any bad choice as all the houses are very charming.

I find that Bambu Indah, in reality, is more beautiful than it appears in the lovely photos provided by the management and the guests. This is probably because in a photo, you will only see a certain angle of the hotel/resort/house. What makes the hotel/resort even more fascinating and mesmerising is its totality i.e. its picture-perfect layout ornamented with beautiful antique houses, organic garden and paddy fields, coconut trees, a stream with water lilies and guppies, a bamboo bridge over the mirror-like natural pool, a cute tree house, the imposing Minang House (a community place to practise yoga, sit and dream), as well as a long deck overlooking paddy fields in the Sayan Valley and Ayung River. All these fit so seamlessly together.

As mentioned in another review of Bambu Indah, we also shared the same view that it would be wrong to leave this place. Bambu Indah is a place of contentment like a paradise. We felt so relaxed, peaceful and happy. I tend to believe that other guests were having the same feeling, as we saw them practising yoga, reading books, drinking wine on the deck enjoying the sunset and evening breeze, etc.

In respect of the houses, I have attached some photos of the Udang House and the Kuning House to let you have an idea of what the following descriptions mean:

"Kuning House
- The cheeriest of all the houses, Kuning House or Yellow House is so named because of its yellow painted exterior and accents. The centrepiece of this house is the hand-carved heart above the door still proudly exhibiting its conception date of 1829, revealing the love and lasting care that it was built with from the Nobleman to his Princess Bride.
- Enjoy the breezes from the front porch and sit three metres above ground from poolside with a view of the Sayan Ridge. The furnishings are comfortable, romantic, and charming; perfect for the happy couple or soulful writer who likes to be in the heart of things appreciating the history and warmth of a house well-loved."

"Udang House
- Udang House or Shrimp House is the most unique home of the Bambu Indah estate and perhaps in Bali. Situated above a fresh shrimp pond, this house has tempered glass floor panels for an underwater panorama of crustaceans in action. Authentic shrimp baskets have been converted into lamps for a total fishing village experience.
- This house is situated at the source of the fresh water fountain that supplies the natural pool. The porch is private and cozy for languid afternoons taking in the sounds of the bubbling fountain and coolness of the water.
- The shower is partly indoor and partly outdoor providing guests an opportunity to commune with Nature. The glass tiled roof of the bathroom allows entry of both the light of day and the Bali moon at night–an exquisite experience to bring the weary traveller back to life and create a connection to source."

We like all the houses, but we find the Udang House most unique.

Apart from the complimentary afternoon tea and breakfast, we also had our lunch and dinner at the hotel/resort. The food was fresh and delicious. We could choose to have our meals at the Dapoer restaurant or in our house.

Last but not least, I would like to thank the hotel/resort's team of very charming, friendly and helpful staff for making our stay so enjoyable and memorable. Ms Meri of the front office was so helpful that she came to the natural pool to look for us and update us on our reservation at a third party spa.

Room Tip: We like all the houses, but we find the Udang House most unique. As the houses are all distincti...

I want to have liked Bambu Indah more. I really do. The concept is amazing, the architecture is unusual and very aesthetically-pleasing. We spent two nights there and I could not shrug off the feeling that we were tucked into a movie set. Which is to say, don't look too closely behind the facade.

The service was fine, yet inconsistent. The Balinese staff were gracious, capable and warm. The management staff was stiff and confused by questions. We sat by at dinner one night while the owner of the property loudly berated a staff member about how his meal was cooked.
This could have been handled more discretely and politely, and it gave the impression that he was more interested in being a guest than a host.

The spa was two woven basket rooms plunked in the balcony of the main building with no seating outside, just a desk and a chair and a huge open space. The Sumatran main house was quite impressive, as was the view, yet...for all of its prettiness, the property felt cold and empty. Which is a pity, because the potential is obviously there.

This hotel is just amazing, I would go back to Bali only to stay there. The bungalow, with the half outside bathroom, is awesome. The food at restaurant is really good, breakfast is fresh and delicious. You just need to know you have to take taxi or scooter to go to city center (its a bit far). But it definitely worth the trip.
The staff is nice and helpful.
oh, as well during the night you hear some animals, don't be afraid :) Just know that there are a lot of mosquitoes :(

The most unique and comprehensive rustic setting perfectly curated in a 5 star package. Everything is planned and executed with perfect style. This is the only place I will be staying in ubud from now on (I have stayed at about 10 total hotels and villas throughout Indonesia and this is definitely the best. (Second best was Chedi club in ubud for twice the price and less personality).

Best part of our week-long trip to Bali! We stayed here in December 2013; my girlfriend and I stayed here for three nights, and both regret not making this the entire base of our 7-day trip. Hands down one of the best choice you can make, especially if you're staying in Ubud.

-The rooms (villas) are the best part...antique and exotic, with a feel like you're either Balinese royalty or simply at home, living in the middle of the jungle (highly recommend the Elora and Orin house!!). Also very clean and extremely comfortable (for those worried that it's too exotic or un-resort like). I'll note that this isn't a five-star hotel like St Regis, but the authentic/chic feel and presentation of both the room and resort MORE than compensate for marble-tiled rooms and upscale living (why would you go to Bali for that anyways?). To note, we finished our Bali trip at the 5-star Ayana resort in Nusa Dua, but found the Bambu Indah to still blow that place away!

-Stunning views of rice paddies and hills beyond from the resort itself, and a short hike away from the Ayung River. Ubud center is a 10-15-minute drive away (about $7 USD cab ride).

-Great staff. Very friendly and knowledgeable; both the manager Sutka and his warm staff ensured our every need was taken care of promptly and effectively. They even helped me after I'd gotten Bali Belly early in the trip--gave me some (free) medicine and remedies that quickly helped to dissolve the issue.

-Tasteful, healthy food. Breakfast always came with an excellent selection of fresh fruit and juice, along with a well prepared dish that was cooked to order off the menu. Lunch and dinner had an array of alacarte options, all of which were reasonably priced and served in a beautiful open-air restaurant.

Recommend doing some research on your room/house before reserving, as different houses offer different experiences (some are larger and more fancy, others smaller and more homey). The Elora/Orin House was awesome, and I've heard amazing things about Afrika House as well. Some--like ours--have outdoor (secluded) showers where you can shower under the stars!

Loved every bit of the Bambu Indah..if/when we return to Bali, we will DEFINITELY be staying here again!
