“Beautiful & friendly family run property outside of Ubud”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2011

Villa Sarna has a beautiful and relaxing hillside setting in a quiet area outside of Ubud. The grounds are lush and perfectly maintained with a lovely (heated when necessary) jewel of a pool. There are a number of small buildings on the property, each housing 1-3 rooms or suites. Each one has been nicely decorated in the local style and has an up-to-date bathroom and usually small terrace. The staff is wonderfully friendly and extremely accomodating. I would even hate to say that I had any problems there but I did find myself allergic to something in one of the rooms and they move me to another one very quickly even though they were nearly full.

Overall, the feeling is one of complete peace and relaxtion. As some of the reviews have noted, it is a bit outside of Ubud - approx. 15 minutes by car. The shuttle runs regularly and you might have to adjust your schedule to catch it but they are often a bit flexible as well since the hotel has, at most, a small number of guests at any given time. If you are comfortable driving a moto, you could also rent one for added freedom. As a solo traveler, I found the hotel's car service invaluable. I hired them by the day or half day more than once and they proved to be great guides - each time tailoring the trip to what I wanted to see. Although I would also consider something closer in to Ubud center, I also recommend the beautiful Villa Sarna to anyone!

It's also worth trying the 'room-service' delivered from the restaurant at the end of the road because the food is excellent and it's lovely to have a leisurely meal on your terrace! A visit by the hotel's resident golden retriever is an extra treat!

This was our first visit to Bali - and our stay at Villa Sarna has certainly made us decide to go back!
The service from staff was excellent, from the airport pick up, the reception staff, to the spa therapists and especially the guides who showed us the 'real' Bali.
We can definitely recommend staying here if you wish to feel pampered and well-looked after in a quiet and beautiful location. A perfect central place to be based for seeing rural areas, and despite being out of Ubud itself the transport service offered from the hotel made it really easy to access town and other places of interest.
Thank you Villa Sarna for making our holiday a special experience.

Staying at Villa Sarna was a memorable experience for many reasons. The accommodation is simply superb - we stayed in the Saraswati room, which was spacious and beautifully decorated. The grounds of the hotel are wonderfully maintained and the atmosphere is tranquil and relaxing. The service from the moment you arrive is fantastic - they go out of their way to ensure your experience is unforgettable.

What really made our stay at Villa Sarna truly unforgettable was the personal level of service provided by one of the drivers, Made. Made didn't just take us on shopping and sightseeing excursions, he also looked after our son for us and invited us to his house to meet his family. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him. To be honest I find myself running out of superlatives to describe Villa Sarna. It's something that you really just have to experience for yourself.

We had a great time in Villa Sarna. The villas are in a very peaceful part of the region in the middle of the jungle with a great view and a marverllous garden. You can believe the pictures on their website, their premises are even more beautiful as on the pics. Service is fantastic. Staff was always very kind to us. The regular shuttle bus is very convenient. Breakfast is great. The food ordered from the room sevice was very good. It's a pity that we could stay only one week.

We stayed only two nights and it just wasn't long enough. The care and service provided by staff is excellent, not to mention the villas themselves. The place is beautifully surrounded by the most lush and manicured Balinese gardens. The pool is cold but gorgeous and the accommodation is just amazing down to the last detail.
They even arrange free shuttles into central Ubud and to the nearby Kamphung Cafe (the BEST Indonesian meals).
Overall, an amazing place to stay and i hope we get to go back someday. Perfect for honeymooners!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Arjuna room which was, i think, one of the less expensive rooms. But totally perfec...

This is a lovely hotel, but this is a mixed review. Read on...

We stayed in the Krishna suite and our primary reason for choosing the location was to be based away from noise, hustle and bustle so we could get plenty of rest as well as be close to Ubud. We booked and prepaid for 2 weeks but left after only 1 week.

Villa Sarna itself and our room were delightful. We had a fine bed with mosquito netting (wonderful!!). The rooms are perfectly clean and the staff are friendly. Internet is available from a communal computer. You can eat as much breakfast as you want and they have a good menu. Dinners come from one nearby restaurant so you might want to vary it by eating in Ubud. The gardens and pool are gorgeous, the villa looks even better than the photos on their website. A word of caution - there are quite a lot of stairs to get up to the Krishna room, some are steep and when wet, they can be slippery. The room smelled of cigarette smoke, but that might have been from the people in the room below us. The hotel provides a free shuttle service every 2 - 2.5 hours in and out of Ubud - the drive varies from 15 - 25 minutes, depending on traffic.

Unfortunately, loud and persistent noise from a local temple bothered us. The week we stayed there they were practicing for a religious ceremony. The sound was amplified (perhaps by the landscape) so it was louder than we could get the TV volume level so we listened to male singing, drums and clanging, starting from around 6am until 11pm every day. It was charming at first but after a week, we just hadn't had the quiet and amount of sleep we craved.

This is a lovely hotel, but if you want to spend much time at the hotel and prefer the sound of nature, check what local ceremonies are happening!

Room Tip: If you want a quiet stay, check that no religious ceremonies are about to occur. Not sure if they h...

Villasarna, Owner at Villa Sarna Ubud, responded to this review, 16 July 2011
Thank you very much for the review that has been given. It gives us great joy to hear when guests truly enjoy and appreciate the beauty and service at our hotel. And yes, I do agree that although the pictures on our website depict the villa well, they simply cannot capture the stunning beauty and serenity that one would experience by seeing our villa first hand.
However, I do want to respond to some of the comments that were made in this review in order to give all Tripadvisor readers a clearer picture as to what occurred during your stay.

Firstly, the religious ceremony that was mentioned in the review actually only takes place once a year. The ceremony was local and only lasts 3 days out of the entire year. I apologize that it was quite noisy, but as one would obviously imagine, there is nothing that we could do. The Balinese are very religious people and their passion for such shines through in the manner in which their ceremonies are conducted. Some guests actually appreciated ceremonies, albeit a little loud, as it allowed them to be immersed and experience firsthand the beauty of the Balinese culture. Although I obviously understand how the noise would be bothersome, especially since the essence of our villa is absolute peacefulness and serenity. I assure you that these ceremonies are very rare in our location.

I also wanted to make it perfectly clear that all of our rooms are absolutely non-smoking. We try to make it clear at check-in and in all rooms that smoking in the room is absolutely not permitted. Perhaps the smell of cigarette smoke was from other guests smoking outside the villa, although even in that case, we ask guests to be very careful in the disposal of them to protect the foliage and villa grounds from obvious hazard. It could be that a guest smoked in the room when they are clearly informed not to do so, as there is only so much we can do to provide information and enforce the rules.

Also, I wanted to point out that we do have WiFi access in all rooms and throughout the entire grounds of Villa Sarna, in addition to the communal computer in our lounge.

Once again, I would like to thank all Tripadvisor viewers for taking the time to read this review and we look forward to welcoming all guests at our hotel soon!

My wife and I went to Bali for our honeymoon. Our first destination was Ubud. We stayed at Villa Sarna on the recommendation of a photographer friend of ours who had shot a wedding at the villa.

This villa is amazing! It is about 5-6 kilometers outside Ubud in the quiet countryside, very close to the most beautiful rice paddies we saw on our entire trip. It's very nice to be able to spend time in the hustle and bustle of Ubud and then come home to your peaceful villa. The villa is very beautiful, and the service is outstanding. The staff will take care of your every need, and with a smile. In fact, we became friendly with the owner of Villa Sarna, and when our camera broke, he got it fixed for us! Above and beyond the call of duty! We highly recommend Villa Sarna!
