Wow! What a night at Villa Sarna! Came through here on my honeymoon. After a bungled boar hunting expedition in Australia, (it is not as easy as it sounds in "Lord of the Flies"), Villa Sarna is exactly what me and my new wife needed. The concierge set up a ziplining tour- UNBELIEVABLE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FLYING!!! The service was great; everyone was so friendly and happy to help us out. When my wife had trouble sleeping one night they even sent up a special tea to our room and it totally worked! Not that we were doing much sleeping on our honeymoon ;). Anyway, can't wait to come back and go ziplining again- it is like you are a monkey!

What a great experience! Villa Sarna was an absolute hidden gem. The rooms are private and all individually decorated, which really gives you the "bali" feel. The hotel is located a few miles outside of central ubud and is surrounded by rice paddies and beautiful scenery. The hotel provides free transportation to and from central ubud which makes it very easy to see the town; although I am very happy to stay outside of the commotion. The food at the hotel is delicious and reasonably priced and the help and staff is extremely accommodating. One day, one member of the staff let me borrow his moped to ride around the area! My regret is not staying in ubud longer and spending too much time down south at the beaches. When I return to Bali, I will definitely be staying at Villa Sarna again. I found the price of the room to be great and the “homey” accommodations to be unmatched by any larger resort. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to go to Bali or Ubud.

While we knew that the hotel was a while out of ubud, I guess we expected tranquility to come with the 20 minute journey! Unfortunately that was not the case and while the valley views are pretty, the traffic from the busy main road can easily be heard across the valley through the trees. The kitchen and transfer staff were really friendly and helpful, the breakfasts themselves were very average.

I wouldn't have wanted to see the state of the health of the chickens where the hotels sourced their eggs (very light creamy yellow yolk, and no flavour) and the bread was revolting, Infact the breakfasts were probably the biggest let down as it seemed everything was done on the cheap, particularly the ingredients and certainly not of the standard you'd expect from the $90USD per night price tag.

Our sleep quality at the Villa Sarna was another let down. We stayed in the Arjuna room (beware!!) which has a resident gecko who kept us awake every night between 2-5am!! Still I would have preferred the gecko to the tonnes of chemicals that they use to clean the room (and perhaps try to kill the gecko) everyday. My husband and I had headaches for the first 3 days until we asked them to stop cleaning the rooms, we aired out the room and then our headaches went away!! Disappointing that they show such a lack of respect for the goegeous environment where they are situated by using these chemicals.

The price of the transfers is extornionate ($USD 15 per person, whch equated to over 300,000 rp. We paid our driver 150,000 rph but you would get it for less if you bargained. We asked the hotel manager for a more "reasonable" price but she wouldn't budge.

On a positive note, the transfers to ubud 7 times everyday were helpful and the grounds of the hotel were really lovely (though the pool is freezing as it gets almost no sun), though perhaps not as drammatic as the -very impressive- website suggests. Whisky the dog is a gem.

Villasarna, Owner at Villa Sarna Ubud, responded to this reviewResponded 25 June 2010

We appreciate the review given of our hotel. After reading it several times over, I must say that I am personally very disappointed and hurt when any guest has a less than wonderful experience at Villa Sarna. Below I will try to explain and elaborate on each of the concerns mentioned with complete honesty and candor.
I am not quite sure how it is possible to easily hear the traffic from the main road through the valley. If one stands on our property and looks out towards the long and deep valley of rice fields and trees, it is quite apparent that the main road is very far away; that is if one's eyes are fortunate enough to be able to even see that far. Perhaps the traffic that was heard was from our hotel shuttle cars that regularly transport guests throughout the day to and from the Ubud city centre. We have received many wonderful reviews praising how nicely we are tucked away into the mountainside and how calm and serene the location of our villa is.
From the review, it is inferred that we source our eggs from a disreputable source. This is completely not true at all. We purchase our eggs and bread from very reputable supermarkets in Indonesia; Makro and Carrefour. I'm sure most of Europe and Asia have heard of the Carrefour brand. We apologize if eggs harvested in Indonesia and Indonesian bread may be a little different from those in Western countries, but this is to be expected and certainly does not mean they are from a non-reputable source. In any case, in our ongoing quest to improve Villa Sarna from comments such as this, I have already taken immediate measures to try to source eggs from the best possible organic sources and purchase bread directly from bakeries, regardless of increased costs. We only want the best for our guests. Guests can see that our choices of breakfast are quite extensive compared to other hotels: our breakfast includes Belgian Waffles, French Toast, Banana Pancakes, Eggs any style, Sausage, Yogurt, Fresh Fruit and juices, cereal, freshly baked doughnuts, etc.
3) Regarding the gecko, we regularly try to steer wildlife far away from Villa Sarna and return them to their natural habitat. Lest anybody forget, we are in Ubud and in the middle of a tropical environment so I'm sure one can understand that there is only so much we can do with regards to Mother Nature. But we always try to do our best, and to be honest, we barely have received complaints regarding the noises that nature causes. On the contrary, many guests appreciate it and it adds to the appeal of our place.
4) We absolutely do not use harsh and abrasive chemicals to clean our guest rooms and bathrooms. We only use standard cleaning liquids, air fresheners and equipment found in the supermarkets above. We respect the environment immensely and the beauty of our grounds - and the immaculate way that they kept are a testament to this belief of ours. We take great pride in the fact that we keep our villas extremely clean and our grounds exquisite, and have never once gotten a complaint about the smell of our cleaning products. I can only assume it was some product we used that perhaps the guest may have been sensitive to, but we would gladly have stopped using it if one had asked. However, our staff was simply told after two nights not to enter the room for any reason for the rest of the stay, but no mention of the reason why. So, at the guests' specific request, we placed all towels and bottles of water outside and did not clean the room or change the sheets for the 4 remaining days of their stay. If one would have explained to us the situation and sensitivity to cleaning products, we would have surely obliged and worked according to the guests' specifications. We only want to keep everyone happy.
5) I have to respectfully disagree that the price of our airport transfer is extortionate. Firstly, the drive from the airport to Ubud is close to 40km, which is about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive with normal traffic. This is obviously not a short drive. Our cars are driven by trustworthy, full-time employed drivers of Villa Sarna. The cars are new, comfortable, air-conditioned, and, more importantly, fully licensed and insured for the safety and benefit of our guests. One would be hard-pressed to find a fare as competitive and reasonable as 30 USD for the quality and peace of mind service that we provide. I am not going to lie and say that if you can't find a taxi for a couple of dollars cheaper. This is a country where you constantly will find people on the street desperately soliciting you for taxi service, and bargaining is commonplace. Even then, I still cannot imagine it's possible that someone could get a price of 15 USD or less all the way from the airport to the Ubud area. But at the end of the day, it's a question of quality, comfort, trust, reliability, and most importantly, safety. In fact, some of the price solicitations you receive might even be higher, in line, or maybe a little cheaper. But the decision is completely up to the guests and whatever they feel is best for them. We are only at your service.
6) The pool is naturally cool because of the varying tropical climate and shade cover. However, because of guest demand, the pool will be fitted with heating in the next 10 days or so.
I hope my response has been helpful to all TripAdvisor members. Again, we only want the best for our guests and will go to great lengths to make sure everyone is taken care of like family and that all guests leave with wonderful memories and smiles on their faces. Thank you to all TripAdvisor members for taking the time to read our detailed management response.

Although this hotel is a little bit out of the way, there are daily shuttles into the town centre every 2 hours. It's easier though if you hire a scooter. The rooms are great, there are only 7, however sometimes you need to keep your curtains drawn for some privacy. Other than that, the hotel staff were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

It is definitely advisable to engage the villa transfer service as the villa is off the main road into the verdent lush greenery of the area. The transfer costs USD15/pax from the airport.
The driver who drove us to the villa was very accomodating as he stopped at a nice cafe in Jalan Raya Ubud for our dinner, before proceeding to the villa. We were greeted by the night duty staff and two big huskies.
This property is not for you, if you are afraid of dogs and particular about their presence around the villa ground. The dogs are tame and will listen to orders in English. Do expect the dogs to swim with you in the pool too or lazing at the breakfast area.
The breakfast is served as a set meal. You could choose 1of the options from the menu.
You can get tour services from the villa and the overall service of the villa was very good. There are rooms for improvements and it is well worth the stay. Rooms are immaculate and beautiful.

Thank you very much for your review and we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. After reading your review, I was very surprised and upset to learn of these other dogs on our property. I learned that these other dogs were owned by our head contractor and/or his employees, and they mistakenly brought them into Villa Sarna when they came to do any work and inspections. The very fact that these other dogs were even on the property in the first place and swimming in the pool was absolutely not supposed to be allowed or happen. There is only supposed to be one dog on the property and his name is "Whiskey," our resident Golden Retriever. He is as gentle and affectionate as a dog can possibly be. As Tripadvisor members can read in several of the reviews, "Whiskey" is truly a star and a wonderful aspect of Villa Sarna, and his docile and loving nature has truly won over the guests and created a very homely atmosphere for them.

I assure all Tripadvisor guests that this matter has been taken care of and everybody has been strongly instructed that no other dogs are to be allowed into Villa Sarna. Our famous Golden Retreiver, "Whiskey", is and will always be the only dog on the premises for the guests' enjoyment. If for any reason guests are uncomfortable with the notion of "Whiskey" on the property in general, please let us know and we will make arrangements with no problem. At Villa Sarna, we want all guests to feel comfortable at all times and have a wonderful experience.

If you'd like to escape the tourist crowd in Bali, this lovely boutique hotel just outside of Ubud is for you. Beautifully appointed rooms nestled in lush terraced gardens overlooking the rice paddies, very attentive service, cooked breakfast included in room rate. We reserved a driver (hotel employee) who provided airport transportation and took us wherever we wanted to go for a very reasonable price (you don't want to drive in Bali!). Comfortable common area (with free internet access) and a refreshing swimming pool also available. Had we not been tourists, we would have been content to never leave the resort!

This was our 4th time to Bali and we decided to stay in Ubud this time. I found Villa Sarna on Tripadvisor and have to say it was a nice surprise. The location is off the beaten path and very relaxing. The hotel is well maintained and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We were traveling with friends and this was their first visit to Bali. They were very impressed and loved the hotel as well. If your looking for a great get-away with a peaceful setting this is the place.
