“Beautifully decorated, peaceful place”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

We loved the Villa Sabandari- we stayed in "Baris". Could not fault it at all. This is a really beaufiful place, so well decorated, a fabulous outside shower and a big balcony with a couch, chair, table. Nice and quiet, no kids and no loud road outside (all though its hard to escape the sound of mopeds anywhere you are in Bali). Its close enough to the center to walk- takes 15- 20 minutes and we had no problem walking back either at night (all though the hotel will drop you off and pick you up for no charge also).

We had our breakfast and afternoon coffee served on the balcony each day which was really lovely. Room was clean, food was really good (the breakfast varies each day and is a surprise but we were happy with it all). We received a day tour in our stay as it was 3 nights- a nice touch and chose to go to the temples close by. We also got a 15 massage each included in the room price and i had an additional massage treatment which was very good. Unfortunately during my "flower bath" there were workers right next door drilling so it wasn't very peaceful.

The only thing i would have changed, is to stay in the room next door (called Barong) which had a front view of the rice fields instead of a side view. Was a very enjoyable stay!

Room Tip: Choose Baris or Barong which are the 2 upstairs rooms for a better view.

We booked 5 nights in Sabandari mid-August 2013, primarily based on its high-ranking on Trip Advisor & similar sites. We made a mistake paid the high price by not checking in detail the villa’s policy (not printed on the English homepage): particularly that they did not allow families with children. We showed up 2 adults with 2 small children. After 30 minutes waiting, the Manager let us know very coldly there was a problem. Eventually the issue was settled as follows: the Manager asked all other guests if they would allow our family to stay just for one night and helped to find another villa for the next 4 nights [which we can warmly recommend for families: Ubud Padi Villas].

All was handled rather professionally – though without any compassion or smile from the Manager - at that point.

However the Manager let us pay IN FULL the 5 nights, applying its cancellation policy which is excessive by all standards (all nights paid in full unless cancellation is received at least 30 days prior to arrival date). Though the promise was made to reimburse us for any night booked by new guests after our departure, we believe no real effort was made to fill the wholly-paid room. Hard to believe no booking could be made at this time of the year (peak season in Bali).

For the one-night stay, our overall opinion is mixed even when taking aside our personal case.

Positive: located close to Ubud Center; staff is wonderful and very professional; free shuttle service any time; the tea-time and breakfast are delicious; style and decorations.

Negative: Views from the ground-floor rooms (ours was Legong) and from the common areas are average – you can get far superior rice-paddies panorama from many other villas; Management is professional but certainly not warm-hearted.

Only suitable for middle-aged couples without children. Read carefully the 30-day cancellation notice, just in case. Don’t expect too much on the views.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms are best

Dirk W, Owner at Villa Sabandari, responded to this review, 23 August 2013
Dear guest,

I am sorry to read that you feel to have been treated cold hearted and without compassion, although I have tried my best to solve the matter in the best interest of all parties involved.

Villa Sabandari is small and we therefore have chosen not to receive families with children to allow guaranteeing a quiet stay to all our guests. Our no-child policy is mentioned very clearly on several pages of our website amongst others on the page with the online booking engine. The drop down box to select the number of guests furthermore has the clear caption: ‘Number of Adults’.
Should you have mentioned your children at any point during the booking process, I would have informed you that we could not accept your booking. We did this on numerous occasions in the past simply because we owe it to the guests that choose to stay with us because of our concept.

It would have been unacceptable and disrespectful not to consult the other guests. One of them explicitly told me they actually booked because of the no-child policy.
Since you arrived in the late afternoon, I felt I had to suggest to the other guests to let you stay for the night, which they agreed to.
I have personally called other hotels until I found one that had availability for the next nights. I am glad you and your family had a nice time there.
The room has been freed in the booking engine the evening of your arrival to allow it to be booked by other guests. This unfortunately did not occur. Rest assured I would have honored my commitment to refund the nights that would have been booked by other guests. Although it was high season, the majority of our guest book well in advance and, due to our location in the rice fields, we rarely have guests just dropping by to book a room for the night.

Our cancellation policy is clearly mentioned on the website and also on the Booking Confirmation that you received. You might find this policy excessive, but I think you can agree it is very clear. Please note that we do not ask for a deposit, nor do our guests have to pay for their complete stay upfront. Payment is done at the end of the stay.

We stayed 4 nights at the Villa Sabandari and I cant speak highly enough about the hotel .
It is very small with only six rooms but they are all wonderful.
Our rooms were huge with modern decor , very elegant. We had a walk in wardrobe and a bath room to die for , including an outside shower and stone bath in the very private small rear garden.
The infinity pool looking over the paddy fields was fabulous.
The service was impeccable. The breakfast served on your own terrace in front of the room was excellent as was the free tea and homemade cakes served every afternoon between 4 and 5pm.
Although a little way out of the centre of Ubud they offer a free taxi service all day long and will take you and pick you up when ever you want from the centre.
Dirk and his staff could not do enough to help when our camera was stolen after leaving in a restaurant.
We will definitely be back next time we are in Bali.

Room Tip: all unique and wonderful

Great accomodation. Very nice villas, set in an amazing countryside scenery composed by rice terraces and temples. A luxury option but where you can easily feel at home.

- Luxury accommodation for what you would pay a 3-star hotel in London or Milan. Rooms are decorated with elegance
- Very friends staff and owner
- Great location: set in beautiful countryside landscape but also 15min walking from central Ubud (+ free shuttle on request at anytime until 10.30pm)
- Good breakfast served directly in the balcony of your room

We stayed at Villa Sabandari for the second time and it was just as fantastic if not better than the first.
I honestly believe there is something magical about this villa and I defy anyone to leave and not feel relaxed and refreshed.
The grounds / pool area and rooms are stunning and it's impossible to fault the staff in any way.
I cannot recommend this villa enough and I look forward to returning for a third time at some point in the future.
Thanks again to the team for looking after us so well.

Room Tip: Recommend spending a bit more and getting one of the rooms that overlooks the rice paddy.

We wanted a place to relax in style and this villa was everything we dreamed of. It is close to the main road (10 min walk), but tucked away securely so you hear no road noise, nothing, just the croaking of the frogs at night. We booked the Lenso room and were thrilled with it - one of the two brightest rooms at this villa (one side looked out into a rice field and another onto a pool). The outdoor shower was a treat. The breakfast was nice (delivered to our own terrace) and the high tea was wonderful (we tried to time our arrival back to the villa for it!). Because we stayed for 5 nights, we also got a free day trip to other places in Bali - a nice perk. And we especially loved the drive out/pick up service by the villa's staff...very special.

Room Tip: Lenso room and the one above it are the brightest...others might be a bit dark
