Dirk and Saar, the proprietors of the boutique V Sabandari, helped us plan our Bali holiday, booked cars for major trips into the hinterland, welcomed us when we arrived at the Villa and made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Voila - a success! We had a minor accident in the streets of Ubud and Saar could not have been more competent and comforting. Our room at the Villa was not one of the Villa's best but it was spacious, modern, clean, attractive and always the exact right place to come back to from our explorations. We were about 3 steps from a very well maintained pool that was the perfect length for laps that would not challenge the holidaying late middle aged body. The best rooms are divine, with upstairs direct rice paddy views. The semi outdoor shower was a cute novelty, beautifully set up - and totally private. Breakfast was basically good, occasionally eccentric, and always adequate, with fresh, different fruit juice each morning, prettily presented fruit salad, croissants, toast and plunger coffee, and then the other element - sausages and eggs, or bacon and tomato, or strange sponge cakes of pumpkin, or whatever. Afternoon tea ( we chose Oolong or coffee) was always a food indulgence. Dinner (if you chose to eat in) was better than most restaurants and the price competitive. We are talking Sydney 14/20, not quite a hat but absolutely not corner warung. The staff were beautiful and charming and hard working. The massage was given by a beautiful and intelligent, frank and sensible young lady - one drifts into thoughts formed from a fixed view of a well wrought copper bowl filled with red petals decorated with fragipani in a star shape and the room and surroundings are philosophically restful and stimulating. The villa lawns, trees, and orchids were a perfect haven from the frantic and fascinating world a 2 minute drive away. No TV, no radio, probably wi-fi if you're up to that but not for us. It was a proper retreat. Located up a rough lane at the edge of Ubud where it turns into Peliatan, a drive into the centre of town was never a problem and a pick-up the same. It would be hard to do better.

We stayed at Villa Sabandari for 3 days of our "Babymoon." Our only regret is not staying longer. The hotel is brand new (it opened in Jan 2010) and the owners (Dirk and Saar) payed special attention to every last detail - from the beautiful room decorations to providing free wi-fi, a flashlight and power adapter in every room, and sarongs for visiting the temples. The rooms are elegant, stylish, exceptionally clean, quiet, and comfortable. The service and staff was impeccable.

While the hotel is slightly out of the way (it's about a 15 minute walk from the center of town), the wonderful employees will drive you to and pick you up from any place of your choosing. We actually really liked the location, since it was away from all the tourists and the setting in the rice fields was extremely relaxing. We awoke to gorgeous views and the sounds of crickets.

Other nice touches:
The hotel staff brought us delicious breakfasts (more food than we could eat) that we enjoyed our own terrasse at our leisure.
The owner serves complimentary tea every afternoon, which you can enjoy at the pool, on your balcony, or in the dining room.
Dirk had phenomenal restaurant recommendations. We loved every single one of his suggestions.
The hotel doesn't allow children and only has 6 rooms, which means that it is very peaceful.
On stays of 3 nights or more, Dirk provides a complimentary 10 hr chauffeur. A very nice perk which we took advantage of to see the countryside.

Stayed 4 nights at Villa Sabandari. Stayed at different locations in Bali, but thanks to the friendly owners and staff, perfect service, superb rooms, great location and best food, this certainly is the place to be. When returning to Bali, we will stay at Villa Sabandari without a doubt.
