The Purist Villas and Spa

We stayed in the Purist Villas, Ubud in October.
We were a little disappointed in Ubud, with it's extremely busy roads, bus loads of tourists, hundreds of motor scooters, tacky shops and noise! But....A short drive out of the town and you are in beautiful, lush countyside, rice fields and pretty villages. The people are very friendly and welcoming.
We arrived at The Purist Villas, after a 10 minute drive up a little side street of barking stray dogs, smoky lit fires, temples and the hustle, bustle of village life.
Upon our arrival we were hustled away, it seemed very quickly down to our villa, a welcome drink arrived, a garland of flowers put around our necks and the door closed. No information given about the complex and or surroundings, we felt a little cut off.
Unfortunately we were booked to stay in the Jungle Villa, ok if you want to be away from everyone in your own seclusion, it is located in amongst the tall trees and foliage, (the villa is very dark). I asked if we could move to another villa, there wasn't anything available at that time, but on the last day, they were more than happy to move us up to the Garden Villa with it's own pool, fantastic in comparison! The Purist Villa complex is very beautiful in design, contemporary with a Balinese twist.
Both villas were unique and beautiful, the furniture and beds very comfortable, the bathrooms and showers wonderful.
Although first impressions not so good, the Purist team are friendly, helpful and efficient, they seem to appear from no where.
Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Thank you Purist Team!

The bamboo villa with private pool is wonderful, great design and greatly decorated with indigenous art from Timor.
The food in the restaurant is solid in quality and presentation as is the spa.definitively on of the nicest places we've stayed!

I ended my trip in Bali here and couldn't have made a better a choice. After my friends departed i headed to Purist and it was the perfect end to a great trip.

The staff is great and always attentive. The food might have been the best food i had in indonesia - even better than the famous Mozaic (which i thought was overrated).

The bamboo villa was perfect. Great decor, quiet, beautiful bathroom, amazing showers and great deck area. It was october so not as hot as it normally is but still warm, but i was disappointed that the pool wasn't heated - it was actually pretty cold so i couldnt enjoy it as much as i would have liked to.

Cons: the rooster that kept crowing at 5AM...be prepared - it's not always quiet. It was also my bad luck i was next door to a family with some very very loud kids - that got really old, very quickly.

Overall, i would absolutely recommend this place, especially for honeymooners or young couples...it's also a nice place for solo travelers to get away and just chill.

I met the owner Alberto who was extremely friendly and hospitable...it sounds like they are building out quite a bit so i imagine by this time next year it will be even more amazing.

We had an upgrade on the first night, so we had a pool on our own. The view was fantastic there, and I would suggest to make the reservation for the room with a pool. The remaining days we stayed in the River Villa which had no swimming pool on it's own, and despite the main pool was nice too, we felt that having a Gazebo on your own with a nice pool is much more relaxing, as there are no parasols to cover the area at all in the main pool and without a parasol is quite tough when the sun is quite strong especially in the morning hours.
The only thing we were annoyed with, was the driver that they had - quite a competency going on among the 2 hired drivers and the external drivers. Every time we used the car with the hotel drivers, all they asked was what did we do and who drove to where, and once we mentioned that we had an external driver (which was only a coincidence) who drove us around the whole day, the hotel driver was not pleased at all. However, these 2 drivers do not speak well English, and the external driver we had spoke very fluent english and we really had a good time having this driver with us as we were much much informed about places we visited and the life of Bali. I'd recommend to have this driver (his name was Made ((Madi?)) I think) instead if possible.

We stayed in Hill Villa at the Purist Villas, a series of discrete, detached villas on a beautiful site full of palm trees and other foliage - it felt like being in the rain forest.
The villa was just a fabulous fusion of modern european and antique Indonesian - stylish and comfortable. The food is totally organic and the signature muesli something to be experienced for breakfast! We had massages in the Spa (excellent) swam in the pool, ate delicious suppers on our balcony and felt totally nurtured by the incredible team of Purist staff. We have travelled the world to some of the most exclusive hotels and can honestly say that the service here was more distinguished and subtle and effective than anywhere we have been. Breathtaking!

Room Tip: Just have a look at the photos of the villas on the website. If you want to sunbathe some of the Vi...

Beware this hotel is not as it appears online and makes me question all the other reviews and how they seem to miss some key points. It is in an extremely remote location so you feel isolated and a shuttle runs twice a day. The dirt path, wild dogs, and baking sun do not make it for a pleasant 30 minute walk into town. Oh yes there is also a chained monkey at a nearby house temple. In the hotel, on the other hand, you are exposed- rooms are easily viewed/accessed with little privacy. Some are very noisy due to children by the pool, construction, and neighboring cock fighting farm. My MAIN COMPLAINT though, is the situation that happened when we first arrived. We were told that there was work being done in our villa and that we were being moved to an equivalent one. When asked to see our villa, we were told it was “dusty”. The equivalent one was not a villa but a room with no private outdoor space, very little light, etc. When we met the hotel owner he confirmed that work was being done, no apologies. I then peaked into the villa we were supposed to have and noticed clothing. Then I confronted the manager he admitted that there were people still staying there. They allowed us to stay later the day we were leaving so I am very grateful for that but even with that there was a lot of confusion and lack of communication, mainly on the part on the manager. Aside from all this though, the hotel is just not run affectively. There is either a lack of management or oversight or possibly a lack of money- maybe all three. A lot of “fibbing” that is easily caught, a lot of miscommunication and misrepresentation.

Overall the owners obviously put a lot of effort and money into the property but it misses the mark. The kitchen was the one thing that seemed to run smoothly and efficiently with a lot of love put into meals. But aside from that there are some maintenance issues that need to be resolved and things require a lot of cleaning. Deck furniture, chairs, rugs are stained and dirty. Floors need a lot of scrubbing, greenery needs a lot of attention. In general this hotel does not have a nice and manicured feel to it even though the intention was obviously there but not followed up on. Things are tidied but there does not seem to be any consistency or careful planning in place.

I also want to mention the 150 minute massage package which is actually a treatment, part massage, part scrub, part bath. We were only given a 9am-2pm slot on a saturday and had to do 9 am.. in broad daylight. I should mention that this was my mother and I. We were stripped almost entirely naked.. together.. touched in places that would certainly make you blush, to say the least. We were left to lie there topless and covered in yogurt, but the kicker was when we were told to get up.. together, with no robes and with 2 massage therapists in the room, and take a bath.. together.. in one bath tub. At which point I said I was done and I’d wait until my mother showers. I mean we aren’t a honeymooning couple here, didn’t anyone notice? The massage was very good- not the fault of the masseuses, but just be aware that this is no a regular spa massage..

Room Tip: Choose Timor or Garden villa and stay away from River 2 and Jungle

We ended up booking a night at The Purist after messing up our dates at another hotel and to be honest we wished we'd stayed longer!

We arrived two hours before check-in but our villa (Jungle) was ready for us and they let us have it straight away. We were greeted with flowers and drinks and made to feel right at home by our 'butler'!

The villa itself was beautifully appointed with everything you'd expect - flat screen t.v. robes, magazines, a massage stone and your very own fishes!!

We spent the whole day by the pool which is a great length for swimming and very secluded.

Food was good but not great.

Overall would absolutely recommend staying here for anyone looking for luxury and a little peace and quiet.
