We were picked up by Agus, the villa’s driver, and driven from the southern part of Bali (Jimbaran) over 2 hours to Toya retreat. We didn’t realize how isolated it is. The nearest decent size town is about 40 minutes away. There are no restaurants or activities anywhere near this villa. Any time we wanted to go to Ubud it was about an hour away, and this cost us about $35 USD every time (round trip).
The food was very good; breakfast is included and the fresh pineapple juice was the highlight. Dinner was about $15 USD per person and was authentic and fresh. We enjoyed almost every dish (3 -4 courses at every meal). Again, we were at the mercy of the villa, except for the one night we were driven to Ubud. We had to prearrange the ride to Ubud, and confirmed this several times, as the staff’s English was rather limited, and we weren’t sure if we were getting the message across. Dinner at the Viceroy was a delightful change of venue.
Toya during the day is stunning. The view is like nothing else in the world. The gardens are beautiful and serene. However, when we would arrive back after our outings in the afternoon, and ready for the pool, it was usually cloudy and windy, and too cold for the pool.
Toya at night is a whole other story. We got bitten a little bit by mosquitoes, but that was just the beginning. There were very large spiders in the bedroom and bathroom. There were also frogs and various small bugs, as none of the doors close tightly. There was some sort of lizard crawling up to the ceiling that was about one and a half feet long. At that point we decided to sleep with all the lights on, but sleep was still difficult. The bugs and frogs are very loud at night in the jungle. And then very early in the morning the roosters start crowing and the woodworking saws of the neighbors get going.
The room was a bit moldy with plaster peeling on the walls and ceilings. There were dead bugs and just a feeling of dinginess. One night is about all I could recommend for Toya Retreat.
