“Absolutely gorgeous place and people - when can I get back?”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

I also cried when we left. That was new!
The people are beautiful, friendly and kind. The location is perfect as Ubud can be a little intense and by taking a 10min drive (40 min walk), it is possible to retreat to a beautiful oasis set between traditional villages and adjacent to the local temple and rice paddies.
I stalked the entire grounds taking too many photos because of its sheer beauty. Dragonflies (which is the meaning of Chapung) of all colours hover over the working rice paddies, shiny luminescent beetles range over tropical flowers in your outdoor loo, frogs observe your shower (small and quaint), volcanic stone walls flank the entry to many of the villas which are enclosed by the Balinese doors decorated with fresh flowers.
The restaurant suspends over the jungle near the river so there is the constant sound of water. NYE was great - personal and fun. The staff will organise anything for you - tours, pickups, massages, food preferences. A private car and driver took us, at short notice and reasonable price, to the Spring Water Temple and another temple nearby which were both highlights. The lake and volcano are a little touristy and you could give it a miss.
Another reviewer suggested that the food was bland but the indonesian specialties at Chapung are delicious - try the Soto Ayam and the Black Rice. Breakfast has lots of local produce, preserves and home made bread. The 1br Villa is a standout. You feel truly special in your own private enclave including pool, massive outdoor area, and beautifully decorated (eclectic with asian and modern influences) Villa with outlook to the palms and the jungle fringe to the river. It was hard to leave to go exploring. We are finding reasons to return as soon as possible.

Stayed at this resort on two separate occasions. The landscape and design is beautiful. The property is set among rice fields and looks onto a gorge. A new restaurant set at the edge of the property overlooking the spectacular view of the gorge is in the final stages of preparation. This will give residents and visitors alike a breathtaking view to enjoy. For those who prefer peace, seclusion and privacy, this is a good place to visit.
It is quite a distance to any entertainment areas, but this place is meant to be a refuge from the grind of day to day life. It was perfect for a week of rest and catching up on work. There was also a marked improvement in the quality of service and food in just two months. I was impressed by the speed of change and the continued efforts of management and staff to improve on the quality. Management welcomes comments from visitors and are quick to address concerns. I look forward to see what else the future holds for this resort.

We stayed at villa number 8, with a really nice 10 meter spring water-fed pool that was so refreshing you never wanted to get out. The staff is wonderfully attentive but also gives you space and does not crowd you with attention. The food was the best we had in Bali and the chef even cooked a special Balinese birthday feast for us which was served in our villa's garden. An amazing experience. This is the perfect choice for a honeymoon getaway and romantic vacation. Approx 25 mins from central ubud; best to rent a motorbike as its perfectly save as long as you go slow and watch the dogs;) chapung is a very very special place, intimate service and quite different than many of the big villa resorts in ubud! Don't miss it.

I spent quite some time researching different villas in and around Ubud. I eventually settled for Chapung Se and was not disappointed. It offered a nice fusion between Asian and European design, was incredibly private and was not excessively priced for a 2 BR villa with private pool.

We (2 couples) loved the outdoor common area of the 2 BR villa which made us feel right at home - there's a dining table (where meals can be served by the villa's staff) and a small kitchenette (big enough to prepare cocktails and smaller meals if need be). The lounge area is also cozy; we spent the latter part of the evenings there watching DVDs (which we bought in town). The two bedrooms are located sufficiently far apart to give two couples privacy from one another.

The setting was beautiful -- in the middle of ricefields, and the villa had a lotus pond right next to it. I initially had reservations about being a 10+ minute car ride away from Ubud, but in the end I didn't mind the ride into town at all. It was a nice way to see the less touristy parts of Ubud. The villa offers a free shuttle into town 6 (?) times a day; all other times its INR50,000 one-way. I can imagine that some tourists would prefer to be able to walk into Ubud, but this did not bother me as I've been several times before. If getting around on foot is your thing, then you might want to consider staying somewhere else (although I must note that most of the nicer places are located just as far out of Ubud town center, or even further out). Personally I prefer to be a little farther away from the noise and action, especially if it means having somewhere that's more lush and private.

I've stayed at more upmarket hotels in Ubud before, but felt that Chapung Se was not far off. The only areas where I felt it falls short of its more expensive competitors are perhaps not having as huge, fancy bathrooms or restaurant(s) on site. The food options are quite limited; after 2 meals there you'll have tried the whole menu. But there are lots of alternatives in town.

The service was good. It felt like a local family welcoming you to their own home.

They also offer daily excursions for around USD75 (for up to 4 persons). There are a couple of options to choose from, including a temple tour which we did.

I would definitely recommend Chapung Se to friends travelling in pairs.
