Owner description: Threads of Life is a fair trade business that uses culture and conservation to alleviate poverty in rural Indonesia. The heirloom-quality textiles and baskets we commission are made with local materials and natural dyes. With the proceeds from the Threads of Life gallery, we help weavers to form independent cooperatives and to manage their resources sustainably.

“The Leader in Indonesian Textiles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014 via mobile

This lovely shop has been around for a number of years and has been proven to be knowledgable in all areas of Indonesian Textiles. This year I purchased several gifts for Christmas beginning with beautiful hand batik indigo scarfs along with organic hand woven natural dyed scarfs both from the Breeze Collection. I love indigo and Threads Of Life certainly supports the artisans that produce these wonderful products. Their staff is very knowledgable and willing to share the story behind each product. You'll learn allot about the textiles of Indonesia in this delightful store as it is # 1 on my gift shopping lists when in Ubud. A fine store not to be missed!

Thank you for your review and your return visits to Threads of Life. The indigo scarves are lovely and all dyed here in Bali. Keeping our store staff engaged and educated is important to us, and to the gallery staff themselves who are eager both to learn and to share what they know. Hope you can visit again on your next trip to Bali.
Yours, William

“Perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

This was an unexpected delight. So informative, no hard sell, visitors are free to wonder through the glorious textiles and information at their leisure. Staff very knowledgible and friendly. An added bonus is the location which is about 120m along Jalan Kajeng; a fabulous lane. If you carry on you reach some of the most stunning paddy fields.

Hello and thank you for your good review. And thanks for mentioning the Jalan Kajeng lane: it gives a real feeling of the old village and community, allowing the visitor to touch the culture, which is what Threads of Life is all about. Best wishes, Will

“Our favorite!”

We love this shop, and visit every day to see and learn about the weavings of Indonesia. The quality is superb and the prices reasonable, considering the quality of the items. Our bags are bulging!

“The best shop in Ubud”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

Let's face it, there is a lot of junk in Bali, and there is no point pretending otherwise. There is much less in Ubud than on the coast. But there is none at all at Threads of Life. I am not the world's most enthusiastic shopper, but I loved this small shop in a laneway off the main roads of Ubud. The quality of the handwoven and dyed textiles is superb and you can easily see the many, many hours and days that go into producing a single piece of work. What Threads of Life sells is not tourist souvenirs, it is works of art. These are textiles from the varying islands of Indonesia, with their individual regional styles, that deserve to be hung on walls and admired. They are not cheap, but look at the effort and skill that has gone into their creation.

If you are in Bali, come to Ubud, come to Threads of Life, pay for genuine quality and purchase something that you will always cherish. This is one of my favourite shops anywhere.

Thank you Richard for your lovely review. I'm glad you appreciate the artistry of the weavers' work. We consciously present the textiles as art to set them apart from the junk you mention, and to draw attention to the women weavers and natural dyers who invest months and years in each piece. As a women's art-form, the textile arts are often undervalued and under-appreciated. Thanks for your support!

“Support a wonderful cause and keep tradition alive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2014

At the recommendation of our hotel and some other travel websites, we dropped by this store, tucked into a narrow alley and rather easy to miss the first time, especially if you're in a cab. After seeing many of the same products around Ubud, walking into Threads of Life presented a different perspective on Indonesian handicrafts. All of their products are made by hand, using traditional methods, and by women whose efforts to produce these beautiful works are directly supported by purchases in the store. The very friendly salesperson explained to us how the pillows we were considering were made and each one comes with a tag that documents the name of the crafter and the location it was made. This store is full of high quality merchandise and as such, prices are not "Bali cheap," so use all the money you've saved on inexpensive meals and free attractions and bring home something that will be cherished forever while doing something good too!

Thank you for your enthusiastic review! We have great staff at the gallery who really own the mission of the organization, and will share what we are doing with anyone who is interested. They know our products as well and can answer most questions. If you want more information, myself or Jean or one of the senior staff can be called to come over from our office (5 minutes away), and will be happy to talk. Indeed, we are a bit out of the way, but are only 200 meters off Ubud's main street. This differentiates us from the mass of other shops, and reduces our rent so we can maximize what we pay the weavers.
