We just returned from a 7 night stay booked due to favourable recommendations on this site
Yes its a gorgeous old Balinese style resort - fantastic setting and very peaceful, old dark timber villas with ridge and gorge below

We booked a 2 bed duplex pool villa and and were expecting a decent size pool after seeing the photo on the website but were dissappointed to find a small plunge pool - so double check with them which villa youre staying in if pool size is important for you
Also - my husband had the club sandwich when we first arrived and spent tbe next 48 hrs in bed with food poisoning!
apart from that - the breakfasts were generous and the staff were lovely

We had our 3 year old in tow - and were dismayed to find out babysitting was 15 USD per hour ( 3 times the normal rate for a luxury hotel in Bali) so perhaps not the best place for young kids or babies as theres LOTS of steps too!
Great for relaxing - honeymooners etc
Free shuttle into UBUD every hour is handy and Bintang supermarket 5 mins down the road
Sedona spa also down the road gives lovely massages for a fraction of the price of the spa at Pita Maha ( without the lovely view though)
Probably wouldnt stay again with kids - slightly overpriced as well - lovely resort though

This was our much anticipated return to Pita Maha and it didn't disappoint. For us, the highlight of the place is its location (just sitting and viewing the hills and the rice paddies in the distance is enough to sooth my soul) and the staff. The pool villas are the pick with their outlook over the river (you can only see the river from some) to the aforementioned views and your own plunge pool (quite small but big enough to float and cool down in). Make sure you leave time amidst shopping and daytrips to just sit and relax and enjoy the tropical ambience!

It is the little things that count here, the staff really pride themselves on ensuring that you have everything you need - from the delicious breakfasts (the Indonesian with its rice porridge and light fragrant curry is a must try), to the impeccably serviced rooms (twice a day) nothing is too much trouble. This trip we stayed for eight nights and this still wasn't enough for us. For extended stays you will be provided with a set dinner in the restaurant - the chef Wayan is doing a great job of really extending the menu and will do his best to accommodate all needs. Do try out a couples massage in the spa - its not cheap but the experience of enjoying the hot/cold plunge pools/ infinity pool/ spring pool and sauna and steam room is well worth it as a special treat.

Other things to do to while away the time:
Try Naughty Nuris up the road for dinner. Great ribs and the most fantastic tuna sashimi on a Thursday night. Here you will sit with others on big tables and its a great opportunity to meet others from the most far flung places.
Murnis is good for dinner or lunch. Make sure you ask if there is room on the bottom terrace!
Head to Siam Sallys in the late afternoon (try and get there before dark so you can enjoy the view from the upper level) and partake in their superb ginger martinis (two for one happy hour) great thai food.
We always use the same driver for day trips and that mad last minute rush around buying gifts etc for everyone. Some of the best we have done are the Bedugal markets and the water palace on the east coast. Nyoman has good english, excellent local knowledge, a lovely clean four wheel drive with extra seats and will endeavour to find whatever you are looking for (this time I wanted bird cages!). Nestled up in the hilly area of Ubud, Pita Maha has a very unassuming entrance from the Street. Entering the lobby absolutely took my breath away with stunning open air views across the river (you cant actually see the river, just vegetation, but it is stunning all the same). Welcome drinks and refreshing cold towel on arrival and the attention to detail is such that the porters carry all luggage (rather than roll it) for maximum peace and quiet. There is always peaceful music playing that eminates through the resort. Some parts of Pita Maha are steep (such as the steps to the pool) but we found it all tolerable. The infinity pool sits over the edge of the hillside and you can peer over to the river far below. We had the garden villa (no private pool) and this was so spacious and peaceful. Very comfy king sized bed, two day beds, floor to ceiling windows for maximum sunlight and views but ability to curtain off all the windows for maximum privacy too (even with curtains open, our villa was still very private). Villa had a private outdoor bath and shower. Complimentary daily fruit bowl (local fruits, none of which we recognised) complimentary mineral water, complimentary nuts and villa had it's own coffee machine! Oh and they supplied a can of bug spray in our villa too Oh and they included complimentary afternoon tea and cake (but we only managed to be at the hotel at the right time to enjoy this once)..
Pita Maha includes a complimentary shuttle bus into Ubud and to the Monkey Forrest which comes in handy as we took this every day to get meals. Highly recommend "Griya" which is a BBQ grill (you pass it on your left as you travel into Ubud from Pita Maha). The Paeo is great too.
We spoke to De Wah, a man that hangs around Circle K, and negotiated transport for the next day (9am-5pm) for $50 he sent along a driver and guide (Wished I remembered their names). The driver didnt speak english. The guide was an older man who spoke english really well and gave us alot of history of Bali. He was absolutely fantastic and did not pressure us to visit/buy items from certain places (as most do) he did however recommend a wood carver to visit and insisted he was the best and the most ethical. (We did not visit the woodcarver as we already had plans) I wished I knew his name as I would highly recommend seeking him out for your transport needs.

We recently stayed at the Pita Maha for four days in the two bedroom family villa. The villa was huge and beautiful. The mosquito net canopies and fresh flowers made it so romantic (despite having two children in tow). The bathrooms were huge and the sunken baths gorgeous.
Our villa had a private pool which was much bigger than we expected and the gardens and views were spectacular. They had loungers by the pool and chairs and tables up on the verandah from where the kids in the pool could be watched easily while mum and dad relaxed with a drink. The villas are extremely private.
The hotel staff were fantastic and the drivers full of information, if asked, and they went out of their way to be helpful.
We chose the hotel for my Birthday and the staff made me feel special, even presenting me with a beautifully decorated black forest cake.
We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting something special. The kids (8&10) raved about it too. People with mobility problems may find the many steps difficult as the hotel is situated on the side of a valley. This is common to many of the hotels in Ubud.

Very friendly and top notch service staffs, beautiful settings.
Stayed in the villa with pool, but since we are bringing our 4 mths old baby girl along, couldnt make much use of it. And did i mention that the villa faces the open valley? Extraordinary view.

Since we are carrying an infant along, the only complaint is too much steps within the resort, especially when you have to bring along a full-size stroller.
Fret not, The friendly service staff always offered to help us to carry the stroller & any heavy items.

Other than this, it is a perfect gateway to relax & indulge in balinese settings.

Ubud is the cultural center of Bali, the dance and music is the most authentic and the best you will see in Bali. This hotel has been a great stay. The grounds and the Villas are spectacular. The service was good, they tried very hard to please. On thing the drivers varied from OK to crook, and was offered a black market deal behind the hotels back to under cut the buy there own driver, better to find a street taxi plenty of them and $ AU 40.00 will get you a whole day
