I have stayed at Ananda a number of times. Most recently with a group of guests/friends (11 people in total).

Ananda is one of the oldest hotels in Ubud. It is set amongst rice fields and has a wonderful feel. It is outside of town, but it is still possible to walk to Ubud Center (though a little bit of a hike). Nonetheless, there are many taxi drivers ALWAYS outside and available to take you anywhere you'd like. [note: The best of the taxi drivers is an older guy named Wayan. He has been a driver since the 1970's and knows everything. He is VERY fair/honest]

There are approximately 80 rooms at Ananda and three pools. The rooms are nice with some problems. The a/c's sometimes have issues, some people complain about a musty/mildew smell, the showers don't have a curtain (you stand in the tub with a hand-held sprayer--it is quite inconvenient), and the rooms are exceptionally dark (not well-lit).

The breakfast is fantastic. Many fruits available. Service is nice (though not exceptional). The grounds are beautiful (except the few times/year when they burn the rice fields).

They have now 4 yoga spaces available if you'd like to host a retreat. They were a good company to work with, but have changed their policies. Now they require 50% non-refundable deposit in order to book/host a retreat/group.

There are plenty of other good options available in Ubud in this price range. But it's not a bad option.

Note:: My wife and I travel around the world (mostly South and Southeast Asia) year-round. We stay in 80-100 hotels per year. We also tour many more hotels for our guests & tours (about 300 per year). We generally seek out hotels that are highly rated on TripAdvisor and Agoda so my reviews are naturally skewed toward the high end. My reviews are generally based on overall value (how much you get for what you pay). We generally stay in low mid-range hotels but have stayed in everything from hostels to luxury 5-star accommodations. If I give a 4 or 5 star rating you can rest assured it’s a nice hotel. It goes without saying that I have received nothing for submitting this review.

I stayed at Ananda Cottages for a week as part of a retreat. Three beautiful pools. The food was really nice but unfortunately a large number of people became sick after only eating there. I highly recommend that people use acidophilus when they're travelling to countries like Indonesia. Nice sized rooms. Staff were really responsive to take an enormous spider out of my outdoor bathroom. The Bliss Spa they use is no frills but I had some great massages there. Really recommend the double handed one. Loved Ananda's yoga rooms. Also highly recommend The Elephant cafe down the road

Recently stayed at the Ananda Cottages. Fantastic Property, The staff was incredible from the front desk Kadek to Mandi. Truly fabulous. Cottages are quaint and the sounds coming from the Rice Fields are incredible. It was an experience that I will truly remember. Yoga retreat was held here and the site couldn't have been more perfect. I would recommend Ananda to someone who wants a retreat in a Magical Paradise.

The hotel has great rooms and cottages. Little rice fields are everywhere in the hotel grounds, the paths wind around them, and they are illuminated by torches at night.
The breackfast buffet is wonderful and offers everything from fruits, rice dishes to western toast or muesli.
The staff was friendly and attentive.
Unfortunatly the pool was not very clean, when we visited, but that may be an exception.
A little way up the road one finds restaurants and a great art museum.
The hotel is a bit too far from the town centre to walk on foot, but taxi drivers wait for guests in front of the hotel.
One can spend wonderfull relaxing days at this beautifull hotel.

We were in a group of 11regular practitioners of yoga seeking a different experience to the studio environment at home and we were not surprised at the greenery surrounding the several villas within the compound or the padifields close bye.For city dwellers this is complete escape from the noise and bustle of everyday life and waking up for the early morning yoga session starting at 6.00am till 8.00 am is a major discipline but is amply rewarded by the wholesome morning breeze and the glimmer of light from the rising sun and the life begins again a new.Of course there are several properties in Ubud that are simply breathless to behold and stay for just a while to immerse oneself in the totality of their uniqueness and beauty..the Ananda cottages are just as good and comfortable and especially a favourites among yoga/yoginis as I noticed several others come and go and easily identifiable by their yoga bags which could have just been purchased in shops past the bridge. My wish is simply for management to provide Wifi facility in rooms as it is more convenient rather than having to go and sit on the hard benches at reception or restaurant in order to find out what is happening at home or in the world. Otherwise food and breakfast is good so too the staff and espesially Gusti who was our guide during the walking tour.Cheers and will come again in 2015!

Stayed here with a group of yoga practitioners and the cottage has a yoga pavilion overlooking the paddy fields. Pretty nice view when the sun rises and sets. You get bird sounds, ducks and insects as you practice. Lush greens and a swimming pool amidst the gardens. Rooms were spacious with a large dressing area and cupboards in the toilet area. The only set back was that the air conditioning was not cool. Ubud market is walkable, perhaps a good 40 minute brisk walk..but you won't feel the distance because there are ample shops to look at along the way. You could bargain for a taxi ride for 40,000 IDR to the market. Staff was accommodating and friendly. Breakfast buffet was almost the same daily. The nearest supermarket,Bintang was just a 5min walk..and you could also find a basic hardcore gym there, with a daily fee of 20,000 IDR.

My husband and I, recently stayed at ananda cottages for a couple of weeks. We had a room on the second level overlooking a lush green garden area. This place has a very laid back vibe, the staff is very helpful and breakfast is a reasonable buffet. It's a good 25 minute walk to the centre of Ubud. We didn't have a tv in our room and the wifi signal was very weak most of the time. Our room was cleaned daily and very efficiently. It's a lovely place to stay if you are looking for serenity and peace.
