“Bliss amongst the Paddie Fields”
Reviewed 7 October 2010

My husband and I chose this accommodation over the internet and after a disappointing stay in Seminyak, we arrived at Ananda Cottages and were simply taken aback by its beautiful setting. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the staff obliging and friendly. The cottages are situated just outside of Ubud but we preferred it this way as it took less than five mins by taxi or about 15 mins by foot to reach the little town of Ubud. There is no television in the rooms but this was a bonus as it allowed us to totally relax. We loved Ubud and highly recommend it to the discerning traveller who wants variety, lovely restaurants, culture and beautiful art galleries that are situated on every street corner. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

We stayed here for 1 night only. We were lucky they had a bungalow available. I liked how this place has rice paddies integrated with the hotel. In the middle of the night, the fun and cute sounds of many ribbiting frogs woke me up! This place was very cute. We could not receive wi-fi from our bungalow, so we had to travel to the lobby to get on the internet. Other than that, I was pretty satisfied with our stay.

we arrived in our cottage on the top floor and were pleasantly surprised by the room you had and the beautiful setting in the midst of rice fields. Upon a closer look however, the room was quite dirty: especially the big pillow on the top of the bed had stains and didn't smell like it had been washed for a long time. The sheets were clean but the extra blanket was very 'smudgy' and had a disguisting stain upon it.

The staff were friendly, but with the main purpose of selling their transport and tour options. Lowpoint we thought was the breakfast hostess, who asked us 4 days in a row how long we were staying (she couldn't keep the guests apart) as an intro into the selling part: do you need some transportation or a tour. I think this is absolutely not done within the walls of your hotel, there's already enough selling when you step outside.

There also was a lot of noise when the hotel was quite full, no sound isolation whatso-ever and you can hear your neighbours very well, also a lot of extremely loud frogs in the evening but that was quite charming, the cleaning staff also starts sweeping the outside tiles at 6h30 in the morning! Hence... we didn't sleep very well...

the swimming pool is very nice and we saw a lot of cool animals in the gardens and from our balcony: off course a lot of gekkos, big salamanders by the pool, geese, beautiful butterflies, big spiders, ...

We travelled with our 3 kids. Boys 14 and 11, and our 5yr old girl.
this hotel was so authentically bali, wot a novelty for the kids and us as well.
We had an upstairs 2bed family villa. although it was just 2 rooms next to each other, the main room was huge and the views spectacular. The pool very close and breaky great.
Beware no tv....... it was ok for a few days but when the kids are tired after a long day exploring and bike riding we were just lucky we took a portable dvd player with us so they all squeezed around it and watched a movie instead. Staff fabulous, and room service for the kids great jaffles. Nearby restaurants were cheap and tasty.
Dont miss Babi Guling restaurant in Ubud centre, recommended by Rick Stein..... slow roasted suckling pig, on the spit with authentic indonesian spices......and the crackling to die for. open for lunch.... but go early so u dont miss the crackling.
All just a short taxi ride away, and very cheap.
We loved Ananda Cottages.

Just back from Bali and stayed in Ananda Cottages for the first time. We tried to have an open mind as it is always a bit daunting when you try somewhere for first time. We were pleasantly surprised with the hotel. The resort has lots of land and everything is well spaced out . There are 3 pools and each one has a beautiful setting. We had a downstairs room for the first night which was very nice and well equiped with four poster bed and open shower bathroom. The shower was outside in a luxury bathroom . it has 3 walls and is very private but gives you the feeling you are out in nature. The next day as we had booked a room with a balcony upstairs and one was available we decided to sample that as well . The room was again very nice with four poster bed and a wooden balcony with table chairs and small sofa over looking the rice paddies. We certainly loved the place and the wildlife was amazing . Huge butterlies and bearded dragon and lizzards and all sorts ( not in the room) . The only negative was that the upstairs rooms with wood panneling seemed to carry sound and you could almost make out what the neighbours were saying. Luckily it is a resort where people go for tranquility so it was not too noisy . The breakfast which was included was buffet style . The earlier the fresher it was of course but nice and plenty of it . Never tried the dinners as we were out in Ubud for meals. We tried Indus ( across the road) which was nice and has beautifull views but Gill's cafe ( again nearby on same side of hotel but towards Ubud) had amazing ribs which fell of the bone and had such nice flavour. We only discovered more places on our day of departure ( other direction away from Ubud) as we assumed everything was in Ubud centre. Nuri's warung was serving ribs when we walked past and they looked very nice too. Will try them next time. Had a great holiday 7 days in Sanur and 3 days in Ubud.

I stayed in this hotel with a group of 14 people and everybody liked this hotel. The rooms are situated in small buildings (cottages) and are typically Indonesian (nice entrance door!). The room was quite big and the bathroom was clean. The hotel has 3 swimming pools which are situated in different areas of the complex so a swimming pool is always nearby. The restaurant was good.
It was a pity that the staff (especially at the reception) was not always friendly and Ubud is a 20 minutes walk

The rice field themed property is amazing and the biggest feature of ananda cottages since you really get a feeling of being in the nature.

The food is ok but nothing special and the price for it just as for the rooms is rather high. The hotel itself is a little walk out of Ubud which, if you don't have a car or scooter, can be an annoyance.

All in all I would recommend this hotel without hesitation but there are a few better alternatives in town especially since the service was kind of unfriendly at times. Make sure you don't get a downstairs room and if you can ask for something close to the pool.
