We spent a very pleasant long weekend at Hotel Tjampuhan. Service was excellent from the word go: every single staff member we came across was friendly and attentative, and did his or her utmost to make our stay enjoyable. The hotel is in a stunningly beautiful setting - beside a river and merging into the jungle. It may not have all the modcons that newer hotels have, but it more than makes up for that with its amazing sense of history and faded grandeur. The rooms have large private terraces or balconies where you can sit and absorb the sounds of the jungle. At night, you fall asleep to a choir of frogs, and in the morning you awake to the sound of birds and the river. The distance into town is easily walkable and there's also a free shuttle bus. Breakfast and dinner were very good and atmospheric too. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our room was midway between the road and the river and was still very quiet

We stayed here 20 years ago and then a couple of days last year. The difference was like night and day. Twenty years ago, this place was magical. It was quiet, exotic and romantic. Now, they have built a large lobby area and new rooms which feel cold and modern. The noise from the street above is awful. Lots of big trucks and loud motocycles all night long. The price for the room has tripled and the quality has substantially diminished. Not a place we would stay again !

This was the first time we had stayed at Hotel Tjampuhan, and stayed here for 7 nights in a Raja room. We found it to be absolutely beautiful, the scenery was breath taking, and so peaceful with the sound of the river below.
The staff were extremely friendly and willing to help with our needs.
The breakfast was very nice, was buffet style, and was sufficient to satisfy us.
Room service meals were lovely, a little expensive, but after a long day, was nice to be able to relax with a meal in our room.
Location was great, handy to the main Ubud shopping and within walking distance to restaurants. A great one really close was Murni's Wyong.
All in all, we had a great stay here, but if you are expecting a 5 star Hotel then this is not the place for you. There are lots of steps also, so must be reasonable fit.
We will certainly be back to stay at this amazing place.

I had imagined a relaxing resort, I suspect inspired by the notion of Eat Pray Love. However as so often happens with Asia the expectations are never met by the reality. Firstly, the steps are horrendous, 129 steps from our initial room to breakfast. Given that concrete and building activity was occurring on our patio, we requested a room change. Admittedly this occurred politely and within 24 hours, however we had paid and booked a " Rajah Room", with the change we actually only then got what we had paid for. Service was okay, however the underlying premise to any conversation with hotel staff, which we initially thought was based on some sense of friendliness, was always based on up selling tours, taxis, special sunsets and walks through the ricefields. Cats freely walked through the restuarant, and to top it off we both contracted " SCABIES" ,from the bed linen, itching almost from day two at the resort, and which has required ongoing medical treatment on our return. We were also confronted by constant smoking in the restaurant. AsI say, Eat Pay Leave, and never again.

Room Tip: Only select rooms near the top of the resort, near the restaurant area. Make surenthey have air con.

I have stayed at this hotel before and absolutely loved it however this time we stayed in one of the Raja rooms which was extremely old and rather decrepit. The wood carved bed was broken and the wood was a little rotten in parts. Apart from the dingy room Tjampuhan is still a beautiful site with the most beautiful setting, built into the side of a mountain with the river running below. Beautiful gardens. They have added a free internet room, A natural spring pool. Free shuttle into Ubud.
