Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa
Ranked #68 of 197 Hotels in Ubud
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 15 December 2012

The Tjampuhan Hotel is high up on the hill, set in lovely gardens above the river Oos, a two dollar taxi ride into the town of Ubud. It's an historical place, full of Hindu statuary, dating to 1928, closely associated with Bali's vibrant art scene. The hotel has reasonably priced two-unit villas, each independent from the other, reached by winding stone pathways, lit at night. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, if a little dated and tired. They are not luxurious, but the history and setting more than compensates for any lack of mod cons. The bathrooms are large and the beds comfortable. Each unit has a porch with table and chairs from which you can watch the squirrels jump from tree to tree morning and evening. Staff are friendly and helpful. The only downside for me was the restaurant where the food was not a patch on the better restaurants in town and where the hotel staff seemed unusually quiet and jaded.

Room Tip: The far rooms were quiet and peaceful, if a longish walk from the lobby and restaurant.

We stayed at Tjampuhan in November '12 and understood that the facilities were going to be basic (part of the charm of Ubud). After 12 tours of Bali we decided to move around the island a bit more & check out Ubud. We stayed at two other hotels, one in Seminyak & the other in Tuban.
Unfortunately Tjampuhan only scored an average rating for us. The surroundings & views from within the hotel were magnificent. The charm and old traditional flavor of the place was wonderful.
The Rahja room was clean, large albeit basic. Sorry to say that the breakfast was terrible. we ended up eating down the road it was so bad. The staff were ok but some of the managers were hawking tours pretty hard in order to gain a commission which would have been ok if it was only occassional. The pool was filthy and generally unattended. Overall the place would be a good stay for 2-3 days but not 7 days as we did

Room Tip: The upper level rooms have the best views

As soon as we arrived at the reception we were amazed by the openness and distant views to the rainforest valley and the sound of the cascading river below , the individual rooms are beautifully and traditionally appointed, no fakes here , everything is original , dark timber walls , marble floors and huge balcony or courtyard , all face the cliff and views. And the sound of the river is so relaxing. The people are polite and courteous , the buffet breakfast is great , with ommelettes made to order , and everything you would want In the morning , fresh fruit, croissants, Danish , and Indonesian Nasi goren , fried noodles are yummy . The pool is clean and refreshing. Make sure you bring mosquito spray that's all you will need , I will return to the Tjampugan again and again

The character and charm of this place is amazing! I loved the spring fed pool, all the lush surroundings, and theme appropriate furnishings. Defiantly a lot of steps, but great way to at least make myself do a bit of exercising on vacation. I thought the staff was so pleasant and amazed at the bell hops strength carrying our luggage through the mazes of steps with out even a change in breath. No television and limited Internet made it more of an actual uninterrupted vacation and technology break that was very much needed! We only spent three days here and I would have loved 3 weeks here!

There is so much to look at it is hard to take it all in. The hotel is built on the side of a gorge leading down to a river. Every square inch is carved with monkeys, frogs, weird faces, critters of all kinds. There are many temples dotted throughout the property.

The food was decent both at the breakfast buffet and regular dining.
Internet is spotty.
No TV in the rooms, but you won't miss it.
Location is 10 minute walk to Ubud center, and there is a shuttle every hour
Staff are friendly
Rooms are dated but clean

If you want similar, but with more amenities, just up the hill at the very next hotel is their sister property.

Room Tip: If you need a bit more space, ask for the Walter Spies bungalow. It has two floors and is the origin...

After reading some great reviews here on trip advisor we were very disappointed with Tjampuhan. The hotel is situated in the rainforest overlooking a running river but the hotel is still a 1km walk out of town and the shuttle service doesn't even take you halfway. The staff are disinterested and slack. The breakfast was a 3 star continental at best. We also both got bali belly from drinking the table water! The saving grace was the pool and spa (even though you had to pay USD$6 to get into the spa), we particularly liked the hot cold baths. Stay here for the charm but don't expect much more.
