Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa
Ranked #67 of 199 Hotels in Ubud
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Hotel Tjampuhan and Spa is the first hotel in Bali. It's traditional and spacious rooms are perched above a river intersection that is a sacred site of significance. The rooms are spacious and adorned with paintings and sculptures that are of the highest quality in a town where art works abound. This is hardly suprizing as this hotel is owned by the king of Ubud.
When you step through the front entrance you are entering a wondrous world that is imbued with history, taste and beauty. As a seasoned traveler who has stayed in many 5 star hotels around the world this remains the one I return to on a regular basis. It is to Bali what Raffles Hotel is to Singapore and has a history, atmosphere and unique distinction that for me has no equal.
Along with this the staff and management are outstanding. They embrace you into their "special family" and enhance every aspect of the time spent here..

We stayed here for 5 nights on our honeymoon, the hotel is nice but not amazing. The location is good, about a 10 minute walk from central Ubud and with some nice restaurants nearby.

Our room was not all that clean, there were bits of concrete on the bathroom floor on the first night and many many insects (I appreciate it's in the jungle but this was extreme - we woke up to find them in the bed). It was also very damp, again I appreciate it's by the river but we couldn't get rid of the dampness. However the view from the patio area was lovely.

The pool area is a bit on the small side, we only ever got one sunbed between two, and that was only after someone else left. This was in low season so I imagine it would be worse at busier times. The spring pool was ok but no sun and the water was very cold.

The staff were polite enough but not as friendly as we found elsewhere in Bali. Breakfast didn't seem very varied though the banana pancakes were nice. Oh and the wi-fi didn't stretch very far and was a weak signal, not a major issue as they had some PCs to use but if they advertise it they should make sure it works.

Overall the hotel was nice enough for the money we paid but I feel the rooms and the customer experience could still be improved.

Usually, when traveling, if returning to a particular place, I like to try different hotels. But Tjampuhan, with its magical location, winding paths and gardens overlooking the river always draws me back ..... firstly it has an ideal location, 5 minutes walk to the center of town whilst providing a Shangri-la experience of traditional Balinese architecture and the sound of water flowing, if in your room, the dining area or the two swimming pools .... one salt chlorinated, the other, a clear water pool fed by cooling natural, spring water ( my favorite ..... yes you can DRINK this water .. it is as clean and pure as any on this planet. I also love the sense of history this hotel exudes, with beautiful original and valuable art works adorning foyers and rooms and it is easy to imagine oneself ensconced here, embraced by the friendly staff and management as one might have when it was built in 1928. The rooms are characterized by high ceilings and views across the tropical gorge and river below and offer ceiling fans and aircon as well as satellite tv. Massage and spa services are available on site.

But it is also the unique VIBE/ ATMOSPHERE here. The staff are respected and valued by the Prince of Ubud, Tjampuhan's owner. This translates into a genuine regard for the guests, friendly service and the opportunity for staff to engage with guests who choose to make friendly connections. They love their hotel and are looked after by their management and employer. There is a genuine sense of harmony and balance here that frankly, many of the more expensive hotels just DON'T HAVE!!!! This is a classy and unique Balinese experience.

Room Tip: We choose rooms closest to the Spring fed swimming pool. Many chose rooms closer to the main salt-ch...

This hotel is just great rooms are good they have that Bali feel to it, its a great location easy access to the main part of Ubud, breakfast was adequate, the 2 pools are in a great spot although in busy times might be difficult to get a sun lounge, we stayed april 2014, not busy, only down side is if you have walking issues this hotel is not for you, it has lots of steps as it is built on a hillside all in all I would rate this hotel 8 out 10

This was my second time and my wife's first time to this wonderful place. We stayed at the Tjampuhan Spa for 4 nights and would have loved to have stayed a few more days - the bungalow had the traditional Balinese feel and views over the river valley and rain forests were quite special. The staff were always ready to help and greeted us with a smile. We enjoyed the pool and the lovely setting near the river for the massage and spa treatments. Thanks to the management and staff for making this time enjoyable despite the humidity & the stairs!

Room Tip: If you do not like stairs ask for a bungalow close to street or reception level - if not an issue th...

This hotel is quite special with rooms shared in large bungalows overlooking the Campuhan River. The rooms are large as are the bathrooms (which could use a bit of an upgrade as there was water leaking.) Each room has a nice outdoor area where you can hear the water from the river and a nice shaded place to hang out. The best part of the experience is going to the spa where you can take a hot soak then a cold plunge. The carvings are fantastic and worth a visit even if you don't stay at the hotel. Be sure to check out the spring water pool. Breakfast is included but the coffee is nothing special. There's a great little coffee place called Arak across the street with a real espresso machine.

Recently I stayed at Hotel Tjampuhan for 7 nights during our Sisterhood Womans Travel tour. The hotel was serene & picturesque. Our Breakfasts & dinners were lovely and all the staff were extremely welcoming, friendly & helpful. Our room was a cool sanctuary at the end of a warm day as too was the spring water pool. The hotel is a short & easy walk to the Main Street with a taxi only costing $50,000 rupiahs (less than AU$5.00). I will be returning to this beautiful hotel in the future.

Room Tip: If you're not as fit, ask for a room nearest the reception as there are less stairs.
