“Almost worthy of 5-stars - but sadly just falls short. ”
Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

After trying their Sunday buffet last trip, I returned tonight for another Yellow Flower buffet experience.
It's an excellent thing to try at least once while in Ubud. A help-yourself table full of healthy dishes (not withstanding the delicious deep fried offerings with the seriously divine tomato chutney) - largely vegetarian but with a few bits of fish (and bacon sprinkles) on a couple of dishes. Really great to try such a variety of dishes - all pretty appealing and as healthy-tasting as they look. No stand-out dishes but lots of tasty variety. And selections you're unlikely to find elsewhere in Ubud.

The negatives: a truly ordinary rather meagre dessert (a stodgy pumpkin 'cake', with about 2 teaspoons of fruit.
Also THE most watered-down orange juice I've ever ordered (also crammed with ice). I mentioned to the manager that I'd rather spend another 5 or 10k and not have what was ostensibly an orange juice cordial - he was so receptive to this feedback he refused to let me pay for the OJ - unnecessary but much appreciated - certainly a very impressive and humble attitude and demeanour.

A couple of side notes:
despite the sign at the bottom of the steps saying wifi, they turn it off for the Sunday buffet. Travelling alone, I rely on wifi connectivity for entertainment/company, so again I'd rather pay a little more for the buffet, than have zero access.

So I left with a belly very full of wholesome food, but still just little underwhelmed. If they improve on the dessert, don't water down any drinks, and leave the wifi on (and charge another 30 - 50k), I'd definitely wanna come back. It's outrageously good value - I mean amazingly cheap - so I'm pretty sure no one would mind paying a couple more dollars for these things to be addressed.

Also, they have to HAVE TO look at illuminating the (mostly pitch-dark) pathway - I have a torch on my phone but if I didn't if would be pretty harrowing and dangerous. Also elderly and less-mobile folk beware - the Campuhan steps are not for you.

In closing it's great to see them in TA top 30 - and certainly well deserved for this humble, heathy and friendly Balinese family-run business.

“Food with a view”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

I love Yellow Flower and visited many times. Their nasi goreng has to be the best I have ever had! and I have never been disappointed with anything I have tried there - all very tasty. It is a gem of a restaurant for the Penestanan locals and for the lucky visitors who come across it. Also, try the Sunday buffet - well with it.

“Delicious Food, Lovely Ambience”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

The Yellow Flower Cafe is a lovely little cafe in Penestanan, down a little pathway near villas and yoga centre. The food is really nice, homemade with fresh ingredients. I had a nasi goreng, with came with roasted coconut, banana, chicken, rice, egg and nuts. Fruit smoothies were fabulous. Small and relaxed setting. Made me laugh how all the customers were engrossed in their laptops and tablets while in such a nice Balinese setting, why bother even going out? Walked out past ricefields and ducks, a pretty little wonderland.

i was quite eager to try this. while i don't go out of my way to track down organic food, i certainly appreciate it. was pretty disappointed. not this really isn't very authentic balinese/indonesian food. having lived in indonesia throughout my life, i do feel i'm a pretty reasonable judge. indonesian cooking is renown for it's flavor, which unfortunately Yellow Flower had little of. the ambiance of the place was nice but unless you're really committed to organic eating, i wouldn't bother with Yellow Flower.
