Kupu Kupu Bungalows

I decided to stay in Kupu Kupu for a couple of days after a long international trip, in order to get some rest, which in fact I did. I had discovered them on a previous visit to Ubud, located in the middle of the rice fields 'hidden' behind Jalan Raya (the main street). It was a great decision indeed. Just 5 minutes from central Ubud but it feels you are tucked away in the middle of rural Bali. The resort itself maybe lacks of the luxuries found on more expensive places, like swimming pool, etc. but who cares. Sleeping among the frog and crickets noises and waking up with the sun rays filtering through the windows and being welcomed by a fantastic view of the mirror-like paddy fields is more than a luxury to me. The thatched bungalows themselves are basic, built in the traditional style of two stores, like those ones found in north east Bali and Lombok. The sleeping room is on the toop flor and on the ground floor you find a nice resting/chill area with cushions and a little gamelan for your entertaining. Bathroom facilities are basic, with just the shower and no hot water, but I did not miss it. There is room for improvement in this area though. Also a little kitchen room is provided, but with the vast range of cheap catering facilities around Ubud it makes little sense unless you plan for a long stay. The price (20$) for a double bed bungalow, including a nice breakfast (coffee, fresh fruit and pancakes) is more than reasonable, considering that 60% of this money goes directly into supporting the Kupu Kupu foundation, an NGO which provides much needed help for Balinese disabled people. They do a great job in a country where social protection services are scarce. You might have the chance of meeting the NGO and bungalows manager Begoña, a very welcoming and warming person who will be more than delighted of chatting with you about their work but also any travelling questions or arrangement you need, as she has been living in Ubud for many years and knows quite well the region.

Kupu kupu’s location inside the ricefields makes a perfect environment for people trying to scape any busy city environment. The bungalows make anyone feel in touch with nature and by a short walk of 5-10 minutes through the fields, is easy to hit Ubud’s restaurants, shops and activities.
I am very grateful with Begoña because she helped us arrange the best activities, making our stay unforgetable!
Hope to go again to Kupu kupu soon..

Room Tip: take a sweater when going to the temples in the mountains and visiting the lakes.

Kupu Kupu is nice and simple, don't expect luxury. Good value for money, (yummy) breakfast included, beautiful surroundings, 15 minutes walk through the rice fields to Ubud's main road, the staff is very friendly and Begonia is the most helpful person ever. She can recommend you interesting day trips and will arrange for you the details.
We stayed in the traditional bungalow for 4 nights. The ensuite bathroom was a bit unkempt but besides that, we had a great time and enjoyed our stay very much. What is more important: your money supports Kupu Kupu's work with Balinese disabled people.
Tip: Bring a flashlight for the night walk between the bungalows and the main road.

I really enjoyed my stay at Kupu Kupu bungalows, so much so i ended up staying much longer than expected. The bungalows are private, simple and in lovely relaxing surroundings. It was a 10-15minute walk to the centre. There are good walks through the rice fields close by also. Bagonia was very helpful with advise and can book trips and organise boats and buses and a percentage of your stay goes to the charity linked with the bungalows. No hot water but that didnt bother me.

my husband and I stayed here for 5 days . it was nice, comfortable and private. it's the perfect place to stay if you want to get closer with nature, the perfum of jasmine all days and the music from frogs at night, in addition, not far at all from the busy center ( 5 minutes by motorbike). everything is simple, cheap and I enjoy my daily. for the girls, no hot water but it's fine if you love nature stay here.

Beautiful surroundings. Loved walking the paths between rice fields. I stayed in one of the bungalows up on stilts and loved reading and having breakfast on the outdoor "living room" below. It is beautiful but simple. If you like all the best amenities, you should look elsewhere, but this is a great place to experience a little of the real Bali.

Room Tip: I really enjoyed the room up on stilts.

stayed here for 3 nights, and it was pretty homely except for the stuffiness at night. great for value, and in the middle of rice fields. it is normal to have frienss of the nature with you the whole time, be it their noise making or them physically arnd you. its something good for a getaway from the city. slping with the sound of the frogs singing and crickets mating.
