“Beautifully done, very relaxing”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

We stayed 3 nights in the main villa (2 bedroom, with 2 adults and 2 young children).

Umajati's surroundings are beautiful. The old west java villas are very stylefully 'reassembled', and the increbibly friendly staff coupled with the whole noise/smell of the place is amazing. Being outside Ubud is really nice as the evening sounds of the rice paddies add a lot of charm. The staff are very friendly and helpful, which includes making your breakfast on site (in the connected kitchen) and serving in your own living room. It's a whole new experience! We had lunch and dinner the first day - most ingredients come from their own garden or local markets, one can really taste it. Then the next day took the retreat's minibus to town (complimentary, 15 - 20 minutes, and arrange a pickup by phone later). The owners also run a local weaving business plus a foundation to teach forest protection - very inspiring.

Our children also took full advantage of the pool and the coconut tree hammock.

Ubud is charming and well worth the visit but returning to the evening sounds of the 'bush' in Umajati is......well we can definately recommend it!

What a thoughtful and lengthy review. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this. We read your review to the cooking staff, and they couldn't believe that their food was better than a restaurants: that charming modesty you mentioned. Thanks also for mentioning the tours: we try to find unusual experiences to offer our guests, ways to get into the culture of Bali as we were able to when we first came to Bali 25 years ago. See you again! William

My girlfriend and I stayed for one night. We had an amazing lunch and dinner prepared by the staff. The decor, much of which is from the Threads of Life gallery, is absolutely gorgeous and fits with the authentic and inspiring structure around you. I have honestly never felt the way I did when I was staying here. You cannot help but feel inspired and savor each moment. You will take the time to slow down here...the space demands it. Umajati's location is also a very welcome retreat from the bustle of downtown Ubud. Given the ecological demands placed upon Bali by tourism, it is also very comforting to know that great effort is taken to make Umajati as sustainable as possible. Thank you William, Jean, and staff for creating such a magical experience.

Thank you for your review of Umajati. And thanks for commenting on our ecological efforts. We have just started developing an extensive dye plant garden next to the Retreat, to tie in with the work of Threads of Life and the Bebali Foundation, to add more nature-based interest to the place, and offer more places just to hang out in the natural beauty of the area. Umajati Retreat went above and beyond my expectations. The landscaping and pool area are so calming and beautiful, while the house we stayed in was completely relaxing but maintained the true feeling of Bali. After going into town during the day, returning home felt like a breath if fresh air. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. I could not recommend Umajati Retreat enough!

We only stayed at Umajati for 2 nights but wish it had been longer. The staff were wonderful and catered to our every whim. My only complaint was that I had arranged a baby sitter for one night and she was only available until 8.30pm, I think this was because of a religious festival or it could have been a communication breakdown.
Jean was great with emails before our arrival and arranged transport to the villa for our friends arriving late on the 1st night. We also had massages in the villa which were great. Lunch on the first day was lovely, and the breakfasts were fantastic too.
Next time we hope to stay longer and do some of the tours of the village.

It was great to have your whole family take over both of the houses at Umajati and I am glad that things went well. It was lovely having you all with us. We try to accommodate our guests with complimentary babysitters which are always our staff as we trust them implicitly - but you are right - I think that the demands from the community to fulfill ritual responsibilities must have gotten mixed up with your needs to go into town for a longer night. This was over the Galungan and Kuningan ceremonial time on Bali where there are so many family and community obligations. We are always particularly challenged during this time to fine a way to balance the needs of our Balinese staff and our guests at Umajati. We are so sorry about this and promise next time to make sure you get that night with your family in town while we babysit!

I came with a small group of friends and we stayed in the Wates Bangbau House which is the two-bedroom villa. This house can easily accommodate 5 people, and it felt like pure luxury for just 3 of us. The design of the villa was totally authentic, and it had every comfort I could imagine. Wonderful hot showers with a view to the rice paddy, lovely materials and finishing, comfortable beds, universal electrical outlets. We loved that one entire wall of our living area could open up to the garden. We always had fresh filtered water in our living room and in each bathroom.

The airport pickup was flawless, we were always greeted at the villa entrance by hotel staff, and the breakfast was INcredible. It's western, very healthy/organic, vegetarian. We could choose between an omelette (our favorite) or scrambled eggs, yogurt with nuts and fruit, french pressed coffee, delicious oatmeal cookie/bread with butter. Ahhhh I want to go back!

We were incredibly impressed with the activities director... Fij? She helped us arrange all of our tours, which were well-priced and completely customizeable. I highly recommend the rice paddy tour with Ida (a balinese brahman priest), which ended with lunch at his home. During the tour, we stopped in the jungle and had fresh coconut water from coconuts just sliced off! Fantastic.

We had a massage in our villa on the last day and were quite impressed with the masseuse. They have a male or female, but only one massage table, so you must go one at a time. You can get cheaper massages in Ubud, but it's only a slight discount and you're not in your private villa :).

Don't miss your chance to book here!

So glad to have had you with us at Umajati and that you enjoyed your time there. Given that the staff all learned to cook these kinds of meals from scratch - I am so pleased that they are turning out the great dishes that they do! For many of our cooks - they have only cooked in their home kitchen over wood fires. Vita, our guest relations manager, is a doll - she loves to help make plans with our guests during the time they are with us at Umajati and YES the walks with Ida Bagus in Kiliki is a great chance to see the nature of Bali and learn about medicinal and edible plants. He is good in how he can make the walks easy or challenging depending on the guests. We have plans in the future as we grow - to make a massage area in the coconut garden so we can accommodate more guests at one time as it sometimes nice to just stay at "home" and relax rather than go out for a spa. Come back and spend soon to Umajati.

Jean and William THANKYOU ! Vita THANKYOU !
The owner and staff of this property are some of the kindest and most genuine people you will ever meet so be prepared to be spoilt and shown some truly amazing human nature.
Step out of your transport and through the front entrance of Umajati and you know that you have made one of those good choices.
We stayed 6 nights with our 2 young children and it was still not long enough !
The staff and service are just amazing, all meals are served in or outdoors as you choose by such lovely and attentive people, and the food is just to die for, so fresh and inventive and at such a small cost, thanks Wayan and Wayan you are the best !
We stayed in bagoharjo house and the design and furnishings will give you that wonderful balinese feeling that you travelled so far for, comfy beds, gorgeous bathroom with a view over the rice paddy.
The pool is beautiful, swim to the sounds of nature and hop out to a cold drink or afternoon tea.
Each house has it's own walkway to the pool so it feels like your own.
I could go on for pages explaining how spectacular Umajati is but I'm sure it's all been said before and rightly so.
Umajati is a keeper :)

Room Tip: houses are equally as nice as eachother and the property and garden design is set out so you miss no...

Ahh you and your family were the kinds of guests we hope we have more of - such lovely children! My regret was not having more time with all of you personally. It is always a delight to have children stay with us and watch their amazement to see frogs and hear their sounds at night. Those three sounds of frogs in the ponds are very distinctive -in Bali they are called emplegan, godogan and dongkang. The emplegan is the tree frog with the chirpy sound, and the godogan the bigger one with low sound. The godogan has a garbled repetitive sound. We planted many flowers and fruits to attract the bats, birds and butterflies. It is a great place to have children experience nature up close!

The area was beautifully designed with nice gardens. The houses are ancient Javanese houses with a modern touch - openly designed with a living room, a separate bedroom, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a beautiful terrace.
The staff was so wonderful, very attentive, friendly and exceeded our expectations.
There was a shuttle service for driving you to Ubud center (approx. 10-15 mins). The whole retreat was located in-between rice fields and you would not hear anything else than natures sound. The perfect choice if you want to be in a quiet spot but not too far away from shops and restaurants. For some nights we went out o have dinner in Ubud, but we also chose to stay in the house the other nights to have dinner prepared for us. The served dishes were very tasty and were one of the best meals we had in Bali.

The owner (Jean) contacted us prior to our arrival to offer us a pick-up from the airport and offered us to assist us any time we would have a request. We also met her at the retreat and had a nice chat. She is also very friendly and offered us to help any time we needed her - btw: it was a pleasure to meet you.

We definitely would recommend you to stay here and were a little disappointed once we had to leave. You will not regret booking a stay here.

Thank you for your kind words about Umajati and glad you left wanting to more time! We have designed Umajati in hopes that people will have longer stays so they can experience the Bali we fell in love with more than 20 years ago - we choose to be out of town so that people can get away from busy Ubud (it was a small village where traffic stopped at 5 pm when I first came!) and be able to experience the beautiful nature and culture of Bali. We hope we can become an example of how to build more sustainably and therefore not have such a heavy foot print. I think we are one of the few places on the island that have functioning waste water gardens and hope we can find a way to help Balinese build in this way as well.
