“Perfect Paradise”

My husband and I have been traveling around the world all year and decided to end our journey, celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and my husband turning 50, with a stop over in Bali. Staying 10 nights at Hyacinth House has been a perfect way to celebrate all these milestones in our life. From the moment the wonderfully clever Pia meet us at the Bintang Supermarket and we started our walk up through the gorgeous village along a peaceful path, we knew that we were indeed in for a treat, and we were not disappointed! The house is perfect, the pool is perfect, the neighbourhood with its fabulous restaurants is perfect, the beautiful Dayu(who arrived everyday to spoil us) is perfect....I think Anyone who is reading this gets the idea. Barbara and Henry are just so lovely and friendly and have provided a beautiful piece of heaven for others to enjoy. We didn't feel the need to head into busy Ubud as all that we needed was right at our doorstep. We visited the Putri Bali Spa every second day and enjoyed the magical hands of the beautiful Balinese young people who work there. We ate locally every night but did venture up along the ridge walk one day...also a must.
We were horrified to read the very negative and NOT at all true comment made by a French visitor to the house recently. Like I said, we have been travelling all year, visiting 19 countries and staying in many types of accommodation, this is right up there with our favourites. Negative people do not belong in such a peaceful piece of paradise, so if you are contemplating coming to Ubud and staying at Hyacinth House, do yourself a favour and stay....we have loved it here. Thank you Henry, Barbara, Pia, Dayu, the gardener, the poolman who is so sweet, the beautiful lady who brings the offerings and of course the lady at the wine shop for selling delicious cold Bali wine.

“Tranquil paradise off the beaten track”
Reviewed 18 November 2013 for a stay in November 2013

Nestled amidst the rice patties, this sweet villa was perfect for my partner and I. Yes, at first I wondered where we were going when Pia led us through a long windy track to our villa, but we very quickly came to love this location and wouldn't stay anywhere else. This community of villas sits amongst natural forrest land away from the busy traffic and sounds of motorbikes. Very close by (40m or less?) is the yellow flower cafe, a groovy spot with a relaxed atmosphere, serving up tasty meals with vegetarian options. It is close to many restaurants, both toward the village of penastenan and away from Ubud. The owner Henry gave us some great tips, and we found Henry and Barbra to be friendly, lovely people who took the time to come and talk with us. The villa itself is well equipt. Dayu made us lovely breakfast in the morning and Pia, a clever young woman, prepared homemade breads, jams and fudge. This place is not right in Ubud, it's a couple of minutes drive, or a 10min walk (if you can bear the terrible footpaths). And there are some narrow paths with steep drops at areas, but this is what we loved about it. Also, be prepared for a few stairs down to the main road. All in all, great value for money and perfect if your looking for something with all the luxuries, yet in a more natural environment.

“A terrible experience, the worst place we have seen in Bali.”

The path leading to the villa is so dangerous that we thought on several occasions that we could die. What is described as "10 steps and a small quiet path throught the ricefields" to the villa is actually a dangerous stairway followed by an extremely dangerous and narrow long path with holes everywhere, sewers and precipices, sometimes on both sides. We travel with a baby (in a stroller) and a kid, we had to carry them above precipices! I can't imagine what it would have been at night and/or under the rain, which is frequent in Ubud. Beware, there is nothing else there, except a small restaurant.
The worst part of it being the owners of this place, who were not honest or kind with us. First they replied to our first 2 emails about safety for our kids that this place is good for a family and has commodities around (which is completely false), they were quite pushy to make us book. Then when we arrived they tried to convince us that all this was normal and we were cowardly! They were particularly not nice when we said we would leave.
Then they said we should have read their website (?) and their welcome letter (which is sent long after booking!), and understand by ourselves what the path actually was. They said we had to take responsability for making a wrong choice. They also invented that we did not tip their staff, I don't know why.

As a conclusion, don't go there if you intend to go out of the villa and care for your life, and also if you prefer being hosted by honest people.

Management Response
13 Nov 2013
We're sorry that our small walking path was not suitable for Yasmina and her family. Bali despite many 5 star hotels is still a 3rd world country, which is a part of the charm for tourists. Our houses are in the rice fields in a quiet area, without cars or motor bikes. Many people come to our village to escape the chaos and traffic of Ubud. We don't believe that the walking path is unsafe since many families with children walk it daily and I've never hear of an accident or mishap. There are also many amenities nearby, and if Yasmina had taken the trouble to look and walk around! she would have found them. We are in a unique little microcosm, with 6 small restaurants very close by, a wonderful yoga studio, and a great western styled supermarket. What more could you want? We have 4 rental houses in this area, and Yasmina was the first to voice these concerns. She did receive an immediate refund for the 2 nights that she cancelled, and we arranged a car to take her to her new hotel and had our staff help with her luggage. We would hope that people will read her negative review with an open mind, and come here and judge for themselves.
