spent 3 nights here with 2 boys( aged 12 and 10).good position away from noise of ubud but free and prompt transport arranged to/from the town.rooms large and spotless.Breakfast great and served on balcony (huge) if requested day before.Pool clean, always huge fresh towels to use there.Tea and cake served to room or pool in afternoons-we felt pampered by the friendly staff who were eager to please but never pushy-

Room Tip: room with fan a little warm until temperature dropped late in evening-consider requesting air con

Alam Jiwa was a beautiful place to stay. Initially staying in contact was a bit of a problem, but this is the Internet connection, not a fault of Alam Jiwa, so if you don't hear from them for a few days, don't worry :) The week before we arrived, they emailed us to let us know that the pool was broken and would be undergoing repairs while we were there. They offered us the use of a neighboring hotel, which we never got around to using. The breakfast was really nice, and plentiful. The staff are all very attentive and the atmosphere was extremely relaxing. This is definitely a place where you can lay back on the day bed and truly zone out. It didn't bother us that we needed to have the hotel car take us to town, this was a prompt service and it was nice to jump into air-conditioned comfort after a bit of shopping. The room was lovely, we stayed in Jatayu, bed comfortable and although I was a little apprehensive of showering outdoors, it really was an experience. I loved our villa. I would happily stay at Alam Jiwa again.

We stayed here once before -2 years ago - and were really looking forward to our return. It's quite hard to get a reservation, so our stay wasn't as long as we had hoped, but we were glad we went back and didn't opt for somewhere a bit fancier. There are a lot of quality places to choose from in Ubud, but Alam Jiwa has a magical, peaceful quality that drew us back. I'd also like to try their sister Hotel, Alam Shanti, as a comparison, but that was even harder to get into!

It's not a particularly flashy place and it's a little bit idiosyncratic in places, but the location, atmosphere and decor make it very special. The rooms are set out in 2 or 3 level villas, spaced out along the banks of a stream and looking out over the tranquil rice paddies. The gardens are beautiful, with a wide variety of plants and flowers set with traditiona Balinese stone carvings. The pool is small but very atractive and we never had to share it with anybody, despite the palce being booked out.

The rooms are all individually furnished with lovely Balinese furniture and the spacious verandahs are the real highlight - with day beds, cushions and pillows that demand you stop for a snooze! Some have aircon and some have just fans, so read the room descriptions on the website well, if this bothers you. There is plenty of space, inside and out and a table and chairs on the terrace for breakfast and afternoon tea - both delicious!

The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and the walk into town a gentle easing into the increasing noise and traffic of Ubud's more central streets. If you don't fancy the 20 minute walk, then they will shuttle you back and forwards in their minvan wherever and whenever you want to go. Although there is no restaurant on site, they are quite happy for you to order food in, which we did, one evening. They give you the menu for their own restaurants, but I fancied a Pizza and they were happy to dig out a takeaway menu for a rival! It took forever to come as the delivery bike got lost, but they laid up the table and served it like a banquet when it eventually turned up!

The only slightly curious thing are the bathrooms, which are enormous, but slightly old fashioned, with tubs infront of picture windows looking out over the fields and shower attachments designed for dwarves. Unfortunately, the curtains in the bathroom were a little insufficient if you don't fancy exposing yourself in the buff to the local rice farmers! Our shower fitting was broken and no matter how carefully we tried squat down in the shower, we were constantly flooding the bathroom floor. Get rid of the baths and install a proper shower and the place would be perfect!

Room Tip: Only some rooms have aircon -so read descriptions well if this is important.

We wanted to book all our time in sister hotel Alam Shanti, but we took a few nights in Alam Jiwa first before going to Alam Shanti. I'm really glad we had the chance to experience both locations since each had their own particularly charming elements. Our view of the rice terraces from the Kenari room at Alam Jiwa was really amazing. An upstairs room probably would've been even better. The room was in great shape, the staff was superb and accommodating, the tea and coffee and cake was great, and the enormous yummy breakfast was totally awesome. As I mentioned in my Alam Shanti review, if you are staying in/around Ubud, one of the Alam hotels is a MUST!

A couple details to bear in mind about Alam Jiwa - our room was gorgeous but the lack of a true shower was a little uncomfortable. It's not that big a deal overall, but having a real shower at Alam Jiwa made a big difference. Also, prepare to confront nature head-on. Personally, my wife and I enjoyed seeing large geckos crawling around the bathroom every now and then, but that might now be for everyone. The complimentary taxi to Ubud is great, but I warn you that Ubud may not be what you're looking for.

As I mentioned in the Alam Jiwa review, beware of Ubud. The town itself was a major letdown. If you don't like hundreds of cheap tourist trap shops and restaurants and locals incessantly asking you if you want taxi rides and massages (it's pretty much nonstop as you walk around), Ubud is not for you and you're be sorely disappointed. If you must stay in/near Ubud, you can't go wrong staying at any of the Alam hotels.

Room Tip: Go for an upstairs room if you can!

We stayed at Alam Jiwa last week at the start of our Bali holiday. We had 2 nights in the Cendrawasih suite as we were 2 couples and then moved to 2 separate rooms for 1 night. We would've preferred to stay in Cendrawasih but even though I booked it back in April it wasn't available. I loved the Cendrawasih suite, it was gorgeous, with a fabulous view and very secluded. The outdoor shower was delightful. The staff were amazing, and extremely helpful. We had breakfast on the patio of our room, and afternoon tea by the pool. The food was excellent.
