“Delightful accommodations, outstanding service”
Reviewed 17 January 2009

My son and I stayed at Alam Jiwa for four nights at the beginning of our stay in Bali. The setting, landscaping and houses are charming. Our room was tastefully decorated and extremely comfortable - with a large balcony overlooking a stream, two oversize twin beds, and a spacious bathroom with a fabulous deep tub. But even more important than the accommodations was the outstanding attention and friendliness of the staff - all of whom were genuinely personable and gracious. As a staff member said to us one morning, "This is your second home." Breakfast was great - fresh mango juice and a choice of fruit waffles or avocado jaffles - delicious - then toast and homemade jam. On Christmas Day, they gave us presents. As for Ubud overall - we didn't find it as enchanting as we'd expected - but Alam Jiwa was an absolute pleasure.

  • Liked — Charming, friendly staff
  • Disliked — We were not very impressed with the nearby restaurant, Laka Leke, owned by the same people who own Cafe Wayan and the Alam Jiwa group of properties.

We stayed in the Angsa room December 28-30th, 2008. The room and bathroom were very nice and the porch (on which the staff will serve you breakfast on request) was exceptional. It was private, lush, and unique. The food was outstanding (particularly the pancakes) and the service second to none. We would stay here again in a minute.

I stayed at Alam Jiwa with my wife and son (3yrs old) and with friends and their two kids (2 and 11months) for 10 days. This was my first time here but my 10th ish time in Bali. The place was perfect for us.

We rented one unit and our friends rented the upstairs unit. In the evenings we would congregate on the balcony for drink and look out over the small gorge to the rice fields beyond. The breakfasts in the morning were great (again on the balcony or in a small seating area near the pool) and consited of fresh fruit, omelletes, jaffles, coffee, or balinese porrige.

Going into town is very easy - a short stroll through the village (much nicer than Ubud proper, through (or around) Monkey Forest and there you are in the thick of it. 10mins. Sometimes we would use the free shuttle that the hotel prvided if we were going out to dinner.

Although we travelled with small kids I think it would also be a perfect place for couples since all the accomodation is situated in seperate houses (see photos and google earth).

Finally the staff were fantastic, naturally warm as most Balinese are.

The place is beautiful, the staff are great and it has soul which some of the other - beautifully and slickly crafted - resorts lack.

This was a wonderful place to stay if you want to get out of the hustle and bustle of Ubud. Since we love to walk, the walk into Ubud was easy but hot! (Watch out for the monkeys trying to steal your shopping bags and water bottles.) We enjoyed the lovely surroundings, the quietness and how friendly and helpful the staff was. We had quite a few meals at Leke Lake down the road and even took a cooking class there. Also took advantage of the spa (can't remember the name) and had some hours of pampering.

We were worried about no air conditioner but with the ceiling fan and cooler temp in the evening it turned out just fine.

A great place to stay in Ubud! Far enough from the bustle of town to be nice and romantic, yet close enough for getting in for food, or for a walk through the monkey forest...
Great breakfasts, great room with beautiful views of the rice fields, great pool, great friendly staff that were helpful.
Definitely stay here!

My boyfriend and I stayed in Casuary Room for 6 nights during July/August 2008. We stayed here as my brother was marrying in the associated restaurant, Laka Leke (10 mins walk down the room) and the rest of the party were staying in the sister hotel Alam Indah (which they assured me was just as lovely as Alam Jiwa).

Alam Jiwa is situated the other side of the Monkey Forest from the centre of Ubud set back from the road amidst paddy fields. The gardens are beautiful and mature and all the rooms that I saw look out towards the paddy fields and the stream that runs along the boundary. It is a truely gorgeous and relaxing place to stay. It is about a 15 minute walk through the monkey forest to town but the hotel driver is available all day until 10 pm to drop you into Ubud for free. He will also pick you upon request.

The staff at the hotel could not have been more attentive and interested. They are all obviously very proud of their Balinese culture and were all more than ready to answer any questions we had and help us make the most of our stay. They assisted us in the the booking of our cooking course at Laka Leke (well worth it if you fancy trying to recreate Nasi Goreng at home!) and our wonderful spa day at Alam Wangi (just up the road at the other sister hotel Alam Shanti).

Our room had a huge veranda with a day bed that we could have stayed in! The room was really big, we had a beautifully carved 4 poster bed and the air conditioning was great. The only small thing I would change would be the addition of a proper shower rather than just the shower hose from the bath taps but it is truely a minor thing.

The breakfast was lovely with a wide choice on offer and complimentary afternoon tea/coffee and cake was v much appreciated when we were around.

The hotel is small and personal so that I felt very much at home. Something hat I think will always be missing from larger resorts. I felt that the hotel truely has the Balinese touch. A truely magical place to stay.

  • Liked — The staff and location
  • Disliked — would prefer a proper shower, but that is just nitpicking!
