“Great view, good food, ok service.”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

We read the reviews of The Elephant Restaurant on TA and decided we had to go. We made a reservation and arrived on time. The restaurant was packed so they asked us to order from the "mini menu" because we had a relatively large party. It is frustrating to be offered LESS choices when you are going to spend the most of any group. We reluctantly did choose from the abbreviated menu because we didn't want it to take forever but, despite this, it still took a very long time. When the food came, it was good but frankly not better than many of the other restaurants in town. We felt it was not worth the long wait. Perhaps if you went when it was an off time (4 pm) it would be much better.

thank you for your review. I am sorry you were less than satisfied with the service you received, glad that you enjoyed the ambience and the food.

when large groups of 8 or more people come we offer them the option to order from a more limited menu so that we can guarantee the speed with which we can get your meal to you. it is only offered for your convenience and we never restrict any customers from ordering anything that appears on our menu. indeed we are willing to even adjust all items so that they meet guests tastes or dietary needs where possible.

this flexibility; the fact that almost all of our food is hand prepared from raw ingredients rather than processed; and our adherence to the "slow food" philosophy means that we aren't the fastest restaurant and don't aspire to be. we try and point that out in the menu and encourage people to plan their meals with that in mind. if you are in a hurry we probably aren't the right place for you.
if you have time to encourage your surroundings and savour some food prepared with care and attention we hope you will enjoy what we offer.

having said that there is always room for improvement with speed and efficiency in a kitchen . we will review that this week. similarly, we continually try to improve the quality of our customer service. our staff receive weekly English lessons and ongoing training in how to manage guests. however, Bali being Bali and all the awesomeness that attracts us to it, don't ever expect to find western style service here. it's not our ambition to change the beautiful Balinese culture but rather to introduce our visitors to something different to what they experience "back home".

“Every meal is a great meal!”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Stayed at the Hotel Taman Indrakila off and on for 3 months and had the privilege of eating breakfast and many of our meals there. Subsequently, we have tried almost the entire menu and had wonderful meals every time--especially good for vegetarian food. Our favorites were the orange alert juice, ginger kambucha, smashed potatoes, (raw) lion salad, spaghetti zucchini, larb, antipasto platter and to top it all off Jonny's (raw) chocolate pie and so many more... The view is spectacular and the music and atmosphere great for hanging with friends--they make a great lychee martini=yum! I'd heard from many repeat customers that they make one of the best cappuccinos in town too. You've just got to go and check it out for yourself.

“Fancy place but...”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

The place looks fancy with the higher class service and elaborate menu. But for the food, none of us thought it was good, specially for the higher price than a restaurant in town. And you have to take a taxi to get there.

thanks for your review. sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with us: different strokes for different folks

for other readers please note the following:
- yes, we aspire to look stylish and upmarket but our prices are still absurdly reasonable for anyone from a developed nation. lunch for two including drinks, cake and coffee at the elephant shouldn't cost more than 250.000rp or about $22aud. a comparable meal in australia earlier this year seemed to cost $50-60.
- a cab fare from the centre of ubud to our beautiful location overlooking the lush campuhan river valley costs 30.000rp/$2.50 and takes 5-6 minutes

“A wonderful restaurant to visit while in Ubud”
Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

As a real carnivor, I was surprised by the amazing vegetarian dishes they make here. Service is great as well. Affordable and great view! Ubud is full of great restaurants, but I would recommend everyone to include "The elephant" in your restaurant-tour while in Ubud!

“Great view in an eclectic style restaurant...”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

Just a few minutes out of the town center, the Elephant is a great place for people who want something off-the-beaten path with a bit of decor and a fabulous view. The food is alright, not fabulous, not lousy, just okay. But the setting is lovely which makes for a nice lunch or sunset dinner. The staff is a bit on the slow side, but hey, if you're in Ubud, why rush at all?
