“Amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2013

We stayed 7 nights in a pool villa. The room was truly amazing, how many places can you say you prefer a hotel bed to your own (and I love my bed.) Our bath tub was outside, private with a roof but when the rain came down and we were relaxing back watching the steam rise...deary me!!
Our stay would not have been the same without our butler, he was truly amazing. He took care of us like we were royalty, from the small things like turning lights on at night and folding down our bed to arranging tours and meals. He recommended places for us and if he wasn't sure he would research what we had asked him.
The food was great the view out of this world! If you are looking for a place to stay look no further. Can't wait for our return visit!

We stayed at the Chedi Club for 4 days over Easter followed by 4 days at the St Regis in Nusa Dua (you can read my other review for that) with a 3-year old toddler. The hotel is showing a little bit of wear and tear but the property itself is stunning and the service is absolutely out of this world. Highly, highly recommend. We stayed in a pool villa.

Pros:
- Service is just amazing. Each room is assigned a butler who really goes out of his way to attend to your every need. Our butler made restaurant reservations for us and sorted out transport (to and from) without us even having to ask. We hired a babysitter so we could go out and he came and checked on the babysitter and our son while we were out to make sure he was okay. We did the rice paddy dinner and my husband did not finish his scallops and the chef personally came and asked us if the food was okay since he saw that there were leftover scallops on my husband's plate and then offered to re-do a 3-course meal the next day for us. The list goes on and on.
- Small boutique hotel, with only ~20 rooms/villas. Service is really personalized. Everyone addresses you by name. The hotel was running on full occupancy but felt so serene and peaceful.
- Beautiful property with stunning views of the rice paddies, beautiful lagoon in the hotel with swans and fish for the kids to feed. Beautiful pool and setting overall. Such a peaceful environment.
- Well laid out and spacious villa. We had a pool villa that had a decent sized pool and outdoor Sala and separate sitting area. 2 sinks in room and large indoor shower and huge outdoor pool.
- Reasonably fast/strong wifi signal (for Indonesia) and free
- Spa was very nice and reasonably priced for a this type of hotel. My husband and I each did a 1 hour massage and the treatment was good (not amazing) but the ambiance was spectacular with the treatment room opening up into the rice paddy.

Cons:
- This hotel is not really built for children, so don't go there expecting a children's play room or children's pool. Despite the lack of children's facilities, the staff goes absolutely out of there way to accomodate families. There is a children's menu. The chef took our son on a kitchen tour and made him an ice cream treat, etc etc.
- The room is cleaned by the butler on a daily basis and while tidy, didn't really feel spotless.
- Only one restaurant. While the food was good, it was not mind blowing. The restaurant venue is beautiful though.
- The gym is minimal. 2 bikes, 1 treadmill, 1 elliptical, a few weights. Disappointing.

Tips:
Definitely book a pool villa. There is a public pool and it is beautiful but not huge and not that many sitting out areas. Also, try and book a pool villa with a rice paddy view.
Also definitely do the rice paddy dinner (candlelight dinner in the rice padies) - it was a really unique and memorable experience.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review of our property. We appreciate the great comments about our Chef and his kltchen team and butler service.

While you’re absolutely right that we don’t have facilities designed especially for children, I’m very happy to hear that you and your children were well looked after, and will pass your comments on to our butler team.

Regarding the villa, I will make sure to look at the housekeeping in more detail, and I apologize for that. And though our gym equipment has very recently been upgraded, at this moment we are not able to extend its capacity with additional space or work out equipment, but we will keep your comments in mind for future planning.

Thank you again for your comments and feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you back at The Chedi Club.

Kind regards,

Simon and the management team

We cannot say enough good things about this hotel. This is truly Bali. Service, location and villas fantastic set amongst the beautiful rice fields on the outskirts of Ubud. Cannot think of anywhere better to unwind. 5 star...

Stayed for 2 nights in March. Very impressed; relaxed atmosphere, great facilities and service but the highlight was the food served in a really beautiful restaurant set in the rice paddy. You get your own butler to sort things out for you if you need it.

With only a few private cottages in the large grounds you are immediately at home staying at the Chedi Club. You are allocated your own butler who will look after your every whim and even walk you through the Rice Paddy fields that surround the property. These fields offer a sublime landscape from the the dining room providing the most magnificent backdrop as the sun sets. If you can afford it, stay here if you want to be near Ubud.

As many TA fans would, we read a lot of reviews for each place before deciding where to go and while we've learned that the no. 1 position on here is usually very well deserved, if something is on the expensive side, as Chedi is, you need to read a few reviews to see if it really is worth it.

So given the reviews for Chedi are pretty much universally good and any gripes aren't the sort of things we'd worry about we went a couple of weeks ago. The answer is yes, absolutely worth it! We had three nights in a private pool villa and really enjoyed every minute. The service is very attentive as has been noted but if you'd like them to tone it down you could presumably ask for more privacy, but while a lot of staff do check in on you at dinner (not in your villa at all) as it was we really enjoyed talking to all the staff about their families, the festival that was on at the time and their lives.

The pool villa was totally worth it, the only downside in a way was that we had no need to use the very nice looking main pool! If you are right into massages which we're not, you can get a room without a pool that includes massages every day in the room rate but for us, no contest. The privage pool is actually quite big and plenty of places to lie in both sun and shade which is important. Fully stocked fridge and can make your own coffee or tea any time too. Perfect.

One word of advice, the pools do look over rice paddies, and the rice paddies are essentially a working farm so you get the odd local farmer (from a distance) walking by but we think that just adds to the fun and sense of not being totally removed from the world.

The room was excellent, more than large enough. The shower was good and though we didn't use the outdoor bath, it looked lovely.

The common areas and gardens are totally amazing, it's a very big property so you have a sense of pretty much having it to yourself to wander around. They will also serve you cocktails, afternoon tea etc anywhere you like, from at your own villa to the main pool or any of the other little areas tucked away, all with lovely views.

You may not want to leave but when you do, the hotel will arrange for you to be driven into town and our butler also arranged a bike tour for us. The tour we did wouldn't be for everyone as it was hot and a little bumpy but heaps of fun and we saw the villages and farms (including for the civet cat coffee!) higher up in the mountains and got a much more realistic sense of Balinese life away from the tourist-driven stuff of Ubud. You end up at the Elephant Safari park which I should say we were not looking forward to, having been to some fairly sketchy versions in other countries but were pleasantly surprised, it's clean, neat and the elephants don't look too depressed - we also got to pat a three day old baby which was kind of cool.

Back to Chedi, the dinners were all good and actually the chef will make you anything you like - he was pretty worried when one of us asked one night for just steamed veggies and rice that we hadn't been enjoying it but was more than happy to accommodate a request for just some very simple food. The other of us just ate everything pretty much and thought it was great!

Most of all it's the view, the rice paddies at sunset at the restaurant with a great corriander and pineapple cocktail in your hand is pretty hard to beat. The staff too were all totally lovely. Not 100 per cent convinced by the need for the butler idea, as if you are pretty low-touch as a guest you probably don't need more than your average reception service to deliver the odd thing, but it's nice to have the same person look after you I guess (and saved the dilemma of wondering if you need to tip every time someone brings your laundry or afternoon tea as you can choose - no pressure at all - to give it at the end, if at all.)

We very rarely return to anywhere twice but think we would go back to the Chedi and happy to recommend others go there (espeically if you can go a bit in the quiet season when we got a great three nights for two deal!)

Room Tip: Go with the pool room we say!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your detailed review of our property. We truly enjoyed reading your views, especially because a lot of what you mention, like the working rice paddies (that are now full of ducks) and our gardens, make the estate unique.

We do try to be as flexible as possible at the restaurant, and I have passed your gracious comments on to Chef Dean, who puts a lot of his focus on individualized service and special requests. We’re fortunate that the size of our property allows that.

Thank you again for your review and we look forward to welcome you back to the Chedi Club soon.

Kind regards,

Simon and the management team

We stayed at the villa (#1) for Nyepi with another couple. It was the right place to stay for the day of silence. The attention to detail and service was extraordinary. The grounds are immaculate. The open air dining for breakfast was heavenly. Have never stayed in a more beautiful place. It is hard to capture the beauty in photographs. It is probably the nicest place we have ever stayed in every way imaginable.

Room Tip: the villa (#1) has a private pool. It used to be the vacation home of the property owner.
