The Puri Lukisan Museum is a beautiful museum. It features three exhibits in different buildings. The museum contains mainly traditional style paintings that reflect the Balinese culture and worldview. The surroundings are very beautiful as well. I could spend all day here looking at paintings, having coffee with friends, and just walking along the beautiful museum grounds.

The museum is about 100 m from the market or the palace of King of Ubud. It has a spaciousparking lot, something rare in the vicinity of Ubud town center.

The area has 4 buildngs for displaying Balinese paintings from different eras, most notably the era after 1930s where influences of western painters who lived in Bali at that time, are visible such as the use of colors, shading, materials and themes.

There is also a Marketing 3.0 museum but it was closed during our visit.

Some of the paintings probably need to be stored in some protecting enclosure. I was afraid of people, despite the signs, touching the surface of the paintings. I am also not sure about the humidity or sunshine controls.

I personally like the traditional miniature paintings by artists from Keliki village. These were fine, detailed pictures of humans, animals, trees, gods, demons and so on with intricate layering of shading which makes the paintings appear to be in 3D. I actually need a magnifying glass to see some paintings as these were no more larger than A4 paper size.

The area is so serene that you can use as a getaway or cooling down site after visiting the market or the Puri which tends to be crowded I the afternoon. The museum closes at 6 pm but the nearby cafe may still open until later.

This art museum was worth a visit. It is conveniently located and easily able to be taken in over an hour or two. The grounds are also lovely. It gave a nice sense of the development of local art.

This museum/art gallery provides exactly what the guidebooks say and that is the opportunity to see Balinese culture presented through some pretty amazing pieces of art and sculpture. If you any interest in other cultures then this stop is highly recommended during your central Bali tour. Check out the garden scultpure enveloped by the ficus tree and enjoy the peace and quiet while having your tea or coffee.

I'd say Neka was much better, but it's conveniet and they also have a good collection of woodcarvings and have various classes. The painting class was very good indeed.
