Cendana Resort and Spa
Ranked #131 of 199 Hotels in Ubud
Reviewed 5 January 2012

The Cendana is in an excellent location. It is set behind one of the main roads in Ubud, so it is quiet yet within walking distance to fantastic restaurants, shops, etc. I first stayed at the Cendana in 2006, and was very pleased to return. Our room was perfectly clean and included what seemed to be a new bathtub. Tip -- if you are on the second floor you can enjoy better views of the rice paddy. The pools are both lovely, and the breakfast is nice as well.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor have a better view and seem more private.

We booked in here after reading all the decent reviews on trip advisor and thought it would offer good value for money. How wrong could we be.

We stayed in room 315. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly: it smelt of sewage; the toilet was filthy; towels were dirty and there was debris in the bath.

There was a massive gap in the door frame which meant all the mossies could get in and to our horror there were numerous stains on the mattress which were visible through the sheets.

The hotel staff were not helpful. I would not stay in this hotel. Pay a bit extra and stay in Yulia. We left after 2 hrs in Cedena.

We wind up most trips to Bali by spending a few days in Ubud, the island's cultural capital. We'll have been scuba diving out in the boondocks, so while we outgas we like to get a little more urban, and Ubud fits that bill. Its business is tourism, just as Kuta's is, but here it's cultural tourism, with some of Bali's best performing arts troupes playing here nightly.

The action centers on Monkey Forest Road from the central market (a warren of shops and stalls occupying a city block at the top of Monkey Forest, on down to the Monkey Forest itself. Cendana Hotel is about a 15 minute stroll from the marketplace, but it's on a flag log. So it's not even visible from the road--just a sign and a driveway.

The resort itself is next to a large rice paddy. That's what you see when you go out on your room's veranda in the morning, then walk farther to the resort's restaurant where you get your free breakfast.

The rooms are spacious, with good AC and western toilets, but otherwise a traditional Balinese accommodation--no TV, no glass windows yada yada. The lushly landscaped grounds include a deep freshwater pool and a mineral water pool. There's an Internet cafe for guests by the reception area, but also free WIFI.

All the resorts will arrange tours and drivers for you, but you'll pay extra for the convenience. For our last four visits we've used an independent driver/guide named Wayan Borneo (www.wayanborneo.blogspot.com), who will pick you up at the airport and take you to Cendana, and then take you anywhere on the island you like on day trips.

We use him because he knows where the less touristy attractions are--the temples not full of other Westerners and self-appointed tour guides, the rice paddies not obscured with street vendors, the night markets locals go to for recreation. He can also take you to his village and show you what real, day to day village life is like in Bali today.

His informal taxi stand is on Monkey Forest road across from the entry to Cendana.

The bottom line for Cendana is that it's ideal for travelers who want Bali as real as it gets while still hanging on to AC and Western toilets. We've stayed in fancier places, such as Pertiwi down the road, which is terrific but not, we felt, worth the extra money from Cendana's midprice range (i.e. about what Motel 6 costs here in major market areas). We've also stayed in cheaper fan rooms elsewhere, but I couldn't get to sleep.

So for cultural tourists I think Cendana is an ideal balance.

One extra is that it's just a few doors south of a temple (pura) that offers night time performances under a roof--most performances are open air. So if it's raining, this becomes one of the few places where the show still goes on regardless of weather, and its an easy walk from Cendana.

Not far the other way is Cafe Wayan on the other side of the street. Here, like Cendana, you can get seating in a garden setting far from the noise of Monkey Forest Road. And it offers a
Sunday buffet with lots of Balinese dishes, all labeled, giving you a chance to find out what you like and what it's called.

We were originally led to Cendana by the locally owned scuba diving liveaboard operator we use, Grand Komodo Tours ( http://www.komodoalordive.com/ ). They're a local outfit, and their recommendation of Cendana is another sign of the advantages of getting to know local businesses and using their recommendations.

Room Tip: Second story gives you a better view of the rice paddies.

My husband and I stayed at Cendana in October and had a fabulous stay. We loved the location. It is located right on Monkey Forest rd, close to lots of restaurants and shops, but set far enough back that it is quiet and overlooks the beautiful rice fields. The breakfast is fantastic...we loved the banana jaffles! There are two pools, we loved the one that is overlooking the rice fields. We stayed in suite 12A(a standard room). It was a corner suite on the second floor and had amazing views of the rice fields. I loved the decor of our room, it was beautiful. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely come back!!!
The only con was that they were doing renovations to the spa so the only treatment we could get were massages. However, they are plenty of great spas nearby, we loved Eve spa and had amazing foot massages at Kenko.
We would definitely recommend Cafe Wayan which is very close to Cendana. We had a couple of fantastic dinners there. Try the Dadar Guling for desert...it sooo good!!!
Would highly recommend going for a hike in the early morning along Campuhan ridge. It has some breathtaking scenery.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second floor so that you have a nice view of the rice fields

We've booked the villa with two bed room with a nice size of swimming pool. It was just for 2 nights and we are quite delight with place. They decorated enough not over the top nonsense Balinese style. My partner seem enjoyed the place itself and we have a small corner of kitchen and enough to make ourself coffee or tea in the morning or cooked easy meal that our kids like it during the swimming time. The breakfast is rather sad I have to say! I wish they could offer more rich in local (Can't help to keep on comparing with some resort I've stay in Thailand). Fruits was so tiny and the juice was a cordial (at least is tasted that way)
Staff is great and the driver who took us around also quite informative. Their spa in the other hand bit out of services. Overal is nice place and with more improvement would be a great place

Room Tip: get the villa's style, is worth it

This was my third visit to the Cendana, having stayed previously in the Standard and Superior rooms, now it was time to try the Deluxe Rooms.
Booking was made directly via the Cendana website, and I was offered a discount at the time of booking. Payment was required in full via Paypal to secure the booking.
The Deluxe Rooms are at the far end of the hotel near the salt water pool. They're in a block of 4 rooms, two on top, two below. We requested a room upstairs at the time of booking and this was honoured. The room was quite large, with wood panelled walls, large comfortable bed with mosquito curtains, ceiling fan and air con. There was no safe in the room but safety deposit boxes are available at reception. There was a wardrobe with a small number of hangers, TV with not many English channels, and a small mini-bar. The balcony was dual aspect and large, with a big wooden recliner and wooden seat, overlooking the pool, surrounding rice fields and lush tropical plants. The bathroom contained a tiled bath, separate shower, and sink. Towels and bedding was changed daily. Comparing the three standards of rooms, I have to say that this is undoubtedly the best.
Breakfast is buffet style, with a small selection of fried eggs, crispy bacon, ham, noodles, rice, random jaffle (one day it was sweet, the next day savoury), toast, cheese slices, jam, butter, fruit. Fruit juice was made to order, and coffee or tea was also on offer.
There are two pools, a deep salt water pool near the restaurant and deluxe rooms, and another pool near reception. There were plenty of pool towels near each pool, just help yourself.
As always, a great location; set back behind Restaurant Lamak so no road noise from Monkey Forest Road, but you have shops, restaurants etc on your doorstep.
The slight downside to this visit is that a restaurant/bar has opened nearby called CP Royal Steakhouse; this place stays open until about 2am with loud music. There was a distinct "thud thud thud" of music that could be heard in our room a couple of nights of the stay. Not the hotel's fault, but something to now bear in mind.
Overall though, another enjoyable stay.

We spent 6 nights at Cendana last week and found it to be really good value for the price. We had a deluxe room at the far end of the property, large, clean, comfortable room with huge bathroom. Very clean and comfortable with friendly staff. Only slight downside is the building work underneath so it was a bit of a mess leading to the room and the spa/massage area being in the middle of the worksite. We also had a large group of 'adventure' travellers partying in the pool next to our room at 3am seeing "we are the champions" really badly. Could have done without that but all up it was a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Away from reception, at the far end.
