Tunjung Mas Bungalows and Resort

There's a fine line between rustic, and plain old and dirty. Tunjung mas has crossed that line. I paid extra to stay on the top floor of a bungalow. The room is huge, but apart from the bed, the other furnitures are tiny and mouldy (ie bed, shelf). The bathroom is strangely rectangular such that the toilet is at the rear end. It's looks so scary I cannot fathom the thought of visiting it at night. Ants are everywhere. For the price of us$66 living in this hut, there is plenty of better options in ubud. Try tegal sari just across the road.

Just came back from 7 nights at the Tunjung Mas so we got a pretty good feel for what was right and what needed improving. We'd read some interesting reviews, especially the one about the creeky bed and thought reviewers were being a bit picky, so when we were in Bali in October (in Kuta) we took a drive to Ubud and checked out a few hotels. The look of the hotel impressed us; it had a cosy, intimate feel about it and the pool looked great, so we booked it. The price included airport transfers, breakfast, and shuttle drop-offs in and around Ubud.
The first problem arose on the first night when we tried to get a good nights sleep. I'm telling you, I have NEVER encountered a creekier bed in my life. Any minor movement caused the worst creeking imagineable....so much so that we didn't sleep a wink, and had to move to another room the next morning. If there hadn't been a spare room to move to we would have checked out....it was that bad. The next bed was OK.
The next issue was the TV. After a hard day walking, shopping and dinning, you just want to flop on the bed and watch a bit of TV. Not an enjoyable experience when none of the channels are in english. The TV was so old that when we connected our portable DVD player to it, the movies played in black and white.
Then there was the breakfast. We'd read the other reviews and thought this was going to be something special. The problem here is the hotel does not have a kitchen so breakfast is brought in from somewher else and it was cold. The juice was watery, there was only unsalted butter. We ate it but could just as easily have left it.
Other lowlights....had to remove and clean the showerhead to get a reasonable water flow, and probably saved the fish's life by cleaning the filter and removing gunk from the water feature in our courtyard.
Although we enjoyed the pool and the surrounds, overall, Tunjung Mas disapointed us and we would not recommend staying there.

Tunjung Mas was simple. I'm glad we got one English movie although it was Harry Potter. The place is nothing to brag about but these people really do care that you are happy. It depends who you are and what you are looking for in accomodation. The rooms are decked with beautiful gardens and little statues that give the place the Bali ocean feel. The breakfast every morning is a great start to your day. You get a delicious welcome drink, the shower is unique. Nobody used the pool when we were there because of rain and it was a little cool. But i repeat, these people take care of you. Thanky you Tungjung Mas. And from here, we walked everywhere around Ubud.

Thanks to all the positive Tripadvisor reviews on this delightful hotel, we booked and had the privilege of staying at the Tunjung Mas Bungalows for three nights. We had a downstairs room which was spacious and clean with our own garden and terrace, reached by a winding path through foliage so that it was very private. The Balinese style bathroom was open to the outdoors but was perfectly private and free from bugs. The staff were very helpful and each morning we were served breakfast on our terrace. The pool was small but adequate and had a lovely waterfall effect. It was a lovely haven of peace in busy Ubud and was reasonably close to all amenities. If you get the chance and prefer smaller, more intimate hotels then stay here!

After reading the reviews on this Hotel I decided to stay here and I was very glad I did. It is a very small hotel (and very quiet). There are a number of restaraunts within a minutes walk and the centre of Ubud is only a 3 minute drive (depending on traffic). The rooms were very spacious. I booked two top floor rooms, one for my teenage children and one for myself and wife. The staff were very polite and were eager to help. The breakfast was average. I paid 60USD/night/room which included breakfast and I cant imagine getting better value for money in Ubud. The decor is not modern but classic Balinease and rooms very clean. The hotel accidently charged my credit card twice on departure only because the credit machine was playing up. After returning to Australia I notice the extra charge and they imediately refunded it. A great little Hotel and wonderful staff who enjoy having a conversation with you.

I chose this hotel after looking through the reviews here at Trip advisor and picked this one after the so-called higher rated ones were booked out. But I'm glad I did. Tunjung Mas is a beautiful little comfy hotel. The rooms are large with a bathroom that's so big and beautiful! At $55 its a steal. Loved it. Everything about this hotel is nice - decor, service and fantastic location too. They even arranged a car for us to go sight-seeing, arranged a sarong too for the temple visits.. very kind and nice staff, just the kind you want to meet with on a relaxing holiday.

My husband and I spent a couple of days in Ubud at the Tegal Sari, and when we decided to extend our stay, we found that the previous hotel was completely booked. So we ended up booking for the remainder of our stay at TunJung Mas. We were pleasantly surprised by how wonderful our stay was - the staff was attentive, the rooms were HUGE and clean, and the breakfast was amazing. Actually, the breakfast was potentially one of the best ones we had on the island (DEFINITELY try the chocolate jaffle - it's to die for!). We stayed in room 2, and one of the great things about this room was the 'outdoor shower' feature. Despite its name, the shower only has an outdoorsie feel to it, as it is still indoors. The top of the shower has a big gap where fresh air is let in, and the floor of the shower is covered in smooth rocks. Showering there, you'll feel as though you are in a tropical rain forest, which is fabulous. In general, the hotel is fairly small but spread out, which means that you have the option of privacy and the full attention of staff whenever you need it. Additionally, the rooms are separated by these small pathways surrounded by greenery, so you almost feel like you're walking in a secret garden when you're walking to your room - another thing that makes your stay here feel more intimate, private and romantic. The swimming pool is small, but one end of it is a wall with water cascading down the side of it. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel, and we would definitely consider staying here again.
